Ruger P95 pistol: Polymer Firepower for Less

A great value choice for defensive pistol, the Ruger P95 has proven to be a reliable and accurate performer throughout the years. Sometimes it can be had for under $300 which makes the P95 an incredible value. This is the KP95PR15 model using a ambidextrous hammer dropping, manual safety. Other features include a stainless steel investment cast slide, matte-finished reinforced-polymer frame, a Picatinny-style accessory rail, ambi mag release, 15 round steel magazine, and high contrast sights. I haven't shot the P95 but associates indicate it is reliable and accurate, although maybe not to Glock or Sig standards. Upsides would therefore include: good reliability and accuracy, lightweight (but still 5 oz heavier than Glock 17), easy take down, ergonomic feeling, good grip angle, good sights, good SA/DA trigger, durable, and acceptance of lighting products. Downsides might include: thicker than other designs, bulkier appearance, bulky slide release leaver, and goofy-looking safety design. But these are minor criticisms on a well-executed 9mm service type pistol. It will be hard to match its performance at this price point. Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 7 out of 10 ** Thanks goes to VanWagenen's in Provo, Utah, USA for hosting this review. Without them it would not be possible. This is another "combat" review by Nutnfancy ie an impromptu, non-scripted, non-researched review of the weapon using my existing knowledge. Some details and omissions should be expected. Ruger SR1911

Shooting and showing a brand new Ruger SR1911. I'm shooting Federal Champion 230 grain ball ammo. The gun is a T & E gun, of course. I forgot to mention it in the video. When I ran dry shooting at the gong with the second magazine, the slide did not come all the way back, it appears. I did not notice anything when it happened, and the gun was empty. I didn't notice it until somebody mentioned it . Maybe one of my suspect magazines - don't know. I didn't notice anything on the reload. Anyway, I'll keep an eye on it as we break it in. www.crossbreedholsters.com www.ruger.com academyofselfprotection.com

Ruger Mini-14: Homestead Defender Pt 1

PART 1 OF 3: The Ruger Mini-14 is everything that Ruger says it is: light, fast handling, and durable. Right or wrong, Ruger has always marketed the Mini-14 as ranch and varmint rifle. However it also is a viable, high-value defensive rifle choice that makes a lot of sense and thousands of good people have purchased a Mini-14 with that exact use in mind. Nutnfancy has had a lot of trigger time behind Minis and can attest to their durability, reliability, and indeed impressive handling characteristics. For those users wanting customization, the Mini-14 can be outfitted with folding stocks (Butler Creek folder being the best) barrel shrouds, flash suppressors (older Minis), normal capacity magazines, and optics. In recent years the Mini-14 was finally improved by Ruger: thicker, more accurate barrel, an improved synthetic stock, and improved iron peep sights. Nicely done. The Mini-14 represents a good value in tactical carbines that can serve well in the defensive/offensive role as needed by law enforcement, select military users, and good ole civilian sheepdogs. But it has some definite downsides that a potential buyer should consider. First, its touted lightweight will be worsened by the fitment of optics using the heavy steel Ruger rings (included). And the normal capacity. quality magazines for the Mini-14 (like ProMag brand and Ruger factory mags) are usually made of steel and will add even more weight to your loadout (compared to AR-15 alternatives). Other downsides ...

Ruger 10/22

Plinking with my Ruger 10/22, one of the most popular rifles ever made. This rifle was a Christmas gift from my father in 1987. Tactical Solutions offers some products for the Ruger 10/22, but it's Tactical Innovations that makes the magazine I was trying to think of in the video.

Ruger 10/22: The Everyman's Rifle, Part 1

Part 1 of 2: Every shooter in the US should own a Ruger 10/22 (and I wish my overseas viewers could too!). It is the everyman's, all-around .22 rifle. It shocks me when I find one that doesn't! That's because it provides immense enjoyment and capabilities for such a low cost. Even out-of-box, the venerable 10/22 is accurate, very reliable, tough, ergonomic, lightweight, easy to use and carry, and most of all, fun! It continues to be an extremely successful Ruger design, having sold well over 5 million copies (and still going strong). It has out-sold and out-survived many other .22 designs to include the Remington Nylon 66. The 10/22 has always represented amazing value. That's because for a reasonable price you are getting a rifle that will probably last your entire lifetime. My circa 1976 10/22 (shown) was given to me as a young man by my Dad and has adventured with me in the swamps of Florida and Alabama, the woods of Virginia, Montana, and Washington, the plains of North Dakota, and in the deserts of Utah, eastern Oregon, Arizona, and Idaho. And it's still going strong! There are fancier and equally as-fun .22 rifles available but the 10/22s excel in most areas (and several cool Distributor Exclusive 10/22s abound, like the shown French walnut stocked TALO version) and provide unmatched versatility for the user. The 10/22 has a modular, simple design that makes upgrades to the trigger, bolt, magazine, stock, barrel, and sighting systems easy (many options shown in this ...

Tactical Solutions Ruger Mk II .22: "Suppressed Fun" by Nutnfancy

This is a superb modification to a great design, the Ruger Mk II/III .22 pistol. Tactical Solutions makes superb quality aftermarket receiver barrels for both Ruger and Browning .22 pistols. The Ruger receiver barrels are called the "Pac Lite" line. They also make barrels for Ruger 10/22s. Fitting a TS barrel to your Ruger pistol will transform it into a lightweight, superbly accurate, and funner gun. Barrels come in a wide range of colorations but my favorites are OD, Brown, and Matte Grey. For just a cool non-tactical look, Bright Blue is hard to beat. I recommend getting the fluted versions on all their barrels and paying the extra cost for the fitment Picatinny rails to the tops and bottoms for optical/light accessories. The Tactical Innovations suppressor is lightweight and well-made but as of yet I don't know how it stacks up against AAC or Gemtech offerings. But together they form an impressive and lightweight (and silent!) tactical .22 package. These TS mods are expensive but they're worth it. ** Thanks to ImpactGuns.com for hosting this review and providing the gun. All NFA laws apply to purchasing and fitment of silencers to weapons.

Ruger SR-556 review by Nutnfancy, Pt 1

PART 1 of 2 /////////////// I grew up with Ruger...so did millions more. Ruger guns are tough, usually reasonably priced, well-designed, fun, and continue to stand the test of time. With the introduction of their piston-driven AR-15, the SR-556, their new direction in the acceptance of tactical guns is solidified. This overcomes a past Bill Ruger-era disdain for the such guns in the hands of civilian, a misguided policy that has long since been overturned. Because of this, the mere fact the SR-556 is a Ruger makes it something special. The good news is that the gun does not disappoint even when subjected to extensive shooting and evaluation as we did at TNP. In tactical Run N Guns the SR performed well: accurate, fast shooting, well-equipped, and reliable. It won over all the shooters, including me. Fifty yard accuracy with an unmagnified red dot was impressive with some groups but opened up some at 100 yards. The gun overall showed about a 2 MOA capability at 100 yards with regular ball ammo. Some 1 MOA groups with this regular ammo were achieved but were non-standard. With match grade ammo and careful benchresting, I think the gun might be 1 MOA capable. A better trigger should aid this quest for max accuracy of the SR-556. The design seems sound and squared away with a nice selection of supporting accessories. Ruger SR9 pistol: Gunning for the Glock, Part 1

UPDATE 9/2010: One sample failed reliability tests in my new "Trench Warfare" Handgun Drill. Repeated failures to go into battery. Gun was fresh from box, no cleaning and no lubrication however after cleaning it still continued. Gun was sent to Ruger for repair. PART 1 of 3: I dig the Ruger SR9 pistol. Its another high-value 9mm handgun that seems to give up nothing for its affordable price. My shooting of the SR9 in my Tactical Clinic showed it be a reliable, accurate (even at 100yds!), fast shooting, FUN, and comfortable pistol. When compared against the Nutnfancy standard of 9mm pisitols, the Glock 17, the SR9 does win in the value category but admittedly does come is second in several other categories. But the margins of victory for the Glock 17 against the SR9 are small indeed and with most users, these differences could be negligible. Other uppsides for the SR9 include lightweight carry (27 oz), interchangeable backstrap, well-placed controls, crisp trigger, great sights, sturdiness, good simplicity, high firepower (17 rds!), a chamber indicator (forgot to mention that), and a variety of available finishes. It might be awhile until the accessories market, such as holsters and night sight options, catch up to this Ruger pistol (2008). But the SR9 is selling extremely well and I predict the market will catch up and your accessorizing options will increase. And yes, its too early to tell what kind of track record the Ruger SR9 will establish but I suspect that will be ...

"Getting Stoned with Yoda" Ruger GP100 Trigger Job

Tune up your Ruger GP100 with a trigger job from master gunsmith Terry G from Impactguns (callsign "Yoda" for his Jedi expertise). From the box, the excellent Ruger GP100 is an outstanding, high value 357 Magnum service revolver. It's accurate, tough, durable, reliable, and fun to shoot. It should last forever. However the trigger isn't perfect and needs work for increased speed and higher hit probability at extended ranges, at least when doing speed drills in double action mode. Here I show Terry G working his magic on the innards of a GP100 and we discuss his techniques. I am struck by the complexity of this job compared to the a S&W job but go ahead and try it yourself if so inclined; we include plenty of information for you to do just that. Then PFIDude shows up and we have some entertaining discussions on S&W Performance Center variances, 3-shot burst modes, time travel, another gunsmith who screwed up a PFI customer gun, and the part-time production realities of TNP. This was filmed in Dec 2010 and awaited posting until I had thoroughly tested the Yoda GP100 trigger in tactical shooting. Shown at the end and in other videos, the trigger job is outstanding and highly recommended for the $65 spent.////////////////////////Music: Licensed to TNP from Jason Shaw///////////GunsmithTerry G at Impactguns can be contacted for jobs at: terryg@impactguns.com, ph 801-393-2474, Extension 306

Ruger SP-101: "The Forever .357" by Nutnfancy

The Ruger SP-101 defies the odds. At a stout 26 ounce, this little stainless steel subcompact revolver remains a huge seller for Ruger and very popular with all types of dudes. Compared against much lighter weight alternatives like the Ruger LCR, SW Centennial, Bodyguard, or Scandium framed J-frames, the SP-101 is a portly CCW carry companion. And yet it prevails and sells. Many responsible civilians, LEOs, homeowners, and outdoorsman opt for the little SP-101 as their first choice. To hold and shoot the SP-101 is to begin to undersand why. First, its heft provides what I feel is a certain shootability is such a small form factor. If you haven't done it recently, find opportunity to do a reality check in shooting a .357 load in a subcompact revolver. The word "unpleasant" comes to mind for most with the Scandium framed S&Ws being tortuous in nature. But the 26 ounce SP-101, while still no full size or heavy gun, does manage to tame these loads to controllable and for some (like masochists like myself) even enjoyable levels (which to me opens up recreational shooting opportunities in this small gun). For many, like myself, the SP-101 is enjoyable to shoot but all will understand in practice that it is difficult to shoot well at distance. But with .357 full power loads, it is a hand cannon which barks and spits fire with authority. Maybe now we can understand its appeal. And more importantly, this little cannon is built tough and rugged, able to withstand such battering ...

Ruger Mini-14 Tactical: "Arrival of the Underdog" by Nutnfancy

It's built like a tank and costs around $650 in 2010. That's the high value of the now-improved Mini-14 "Tactical" offers. Model #5847 is reviewed here but its representative of the whole Ruger Mini-14 Tactical and Ranch rifle lineup. Some will discount the Mini as a viable tactical choice, saying that it is wildly inaccurate and cannot be depended upon for hard use. The accuracy criticisms held some truth as the older Mini-14s (and their poor quality, pencil-thin barrels) often had heat-stringing issues and about 4-7 MOA accuracy (with rack-grade ammunition). In this thorough Nutnfancy review of Mini-14 Tactical model (and NRA Model providing more data points), I cut through this chaff and attempt to get to the truth. Fact is, with factory Ruger mags or other high quality options (discussed), the fixed-piston Mini-14 is has been a durable and ultra-reliable rifle (when used with good mags), proven in my own shooting since 1983. Based on the battle-proven M1 Garand action, the rotating open bolt design is tolerant of mud, water, and dust and keeps shucking, often when other gun systems have shut down in tough conditions. But a main focus of this review is not the long-established reliability but the improvements made on the 580 Series of Minis since 2004, particularly BARREL IMPROVEMENTS. In shooting hundreds and hundreds of rounds through the two newer Mini-14s shown, indeed the gun showed itself to be superior to its inaccurate predecessors. With PMC 55 gr FMJ ammuntion ...

"The Ruger LCP pistol: Undercover Cool" by Nutnfancy

The 9.6 oz Ruger LCP is another excellent choice as both an officer's backup gun or a civilian's primary carry gun. As stated in the review video, a 24/7 carry system generally has to be comfortable for its user to employ high percentage carry. And the LCP is indeed comfortable in carry. It is a close copy of the proven Kel-Tec P3-AT but does incorporate a couple of notable improvements: a memory groove above the magazine release, a convex shaped manual slide lock (should be function as last shot hold open as well!), a recessed mag release button, more precise molding on frame (glass-filled nylon), excellent build quality, and a slightly smoother trigger. For these reasons I do slightly prefer the Ruger LCP over the Kel-Tec P3-AT (with more competitors on the way) since their cost is similar. But the LCP also shares several of the design limitations inherent in these sub-compact polymer pistols: like low contrast milled-in sights, stiff DAO trigger, and mag release that can be easily actuated with the thumb. The sights are unimpressive and provide little precision. But with proper trigger control, the Ruger LCP with its 2.75 barrel is capable of impressive accuracy for its category. Expect to spend some time mastering this trigger and learning to maintain sight picture throughout the pull (rec. dry fire practice with snap caps for this). Rapid firing benchrest groups with the LCP (or any tiny pistol) is pretty much impossible but rounds can easily be kept into a plate ...

"The Ruger 22/45: Shoot Forever" by Nutnfancy

You should have this gun in your inventory. Why? Because you don't shoot enough. Centerfire practice will bankrupt you and that discourages practice. Enter a high quality proven .22 pistol design that can improve your infrequent shooting habits. The are several great models to choose from but here's a favorite: The Ruger 22/45. It is a "staple gun" that provides amazingly fun and long lasting service in the recreation and training POUs. With its low recoil and lower noise levels, it is an unintimidating introduction gun for your new shooter. And as a fun and fast shooting pistol, it a great addition to your recreational options. The 22/45 is heavy at 34 ounces but as a infrequently-carried training and recreational gun, that doesn't matter too much (and actually helps minimize muzzle flip). From our 18 years of shooting these 22/45s, we find that both the Mark II and Mark 3 versions of the 22/45 achieve high levels of reliability. You will get an occasional jam which is on par for the type but with quality ammunition like CCI Mini Mags they are infrequent. The Mark 3 version superseded the Mark 2 version and both are discussed. The Mark 3 brought a few unwelcome "advancements:" a magazine disconnector (making both fieldstrip and quick mag changes more laborious; shooting without magazine inserted is now impossible), a loaded chamber indicator, a rounded trigger guard, and a thinned out grip. The magazine disconnector is a foolish addition to the design but the shooter can ...

Ruger SR9 pistol: Gunning for the Glock, Part 2

PART 2 of 3: I dig the Ruger SR9 pistol. And yes, its too early to tell what kind of track record the Ruger SR9 will establish but I suspect that will be an excellent, equal to much more expensive and established designs. If youre a civilian sheepdog, or law enforcement officer buying your own gun, I would put the Ruger SR9 high on my list of defensive pistol candidates. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 9 out of 10

Ruger GP100: "American Steel" by Nutnfancy

Inspiring confidence and making hits. That's the full sized, full weight Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum. This brushed stainless steel Ruger GP100 #KGP-141 is classic American Steel. As a true "Gun Totin' Freak," I've wanted one since age 10. Exiting from over a year of testing in TNP, this gun proved to be another Ruger TANK of a gun. It's solid, reliable, and accurate...all results shown. The out-of-box trigger sucks and needs some work however. Enter Terry G from Impact Guns whose work transformed the TNP GP100 into a wicked smooth combat masterpiece; trigger now breaks at 3 lbs SA, 7.5 lbs DA and is 100% reliable. Running and gunning with this upgraded GP100 was pure enjoyment and all TNP crew fell in love with it. It's smooth and fast and, once I got it dialed with some sight adjustments, very accurate. The current Ruger Hogue grips are perfection for me and they're not going anywhere. But since the GP100 is so commercially successful, if you don't like them (or the sights for that matter), aftermarket options abound (also holsters and speed reloaders). Improving upon its predecessors, the Security/Service/Speed Six, the GP100 is a stronger design utlitizing a thick frame, top strap, and dual locking pawls which anchor the 6-shot cylinder. The .327 model has a 7 shot cylinder. With practice and time, reloads can come fast to you making up for the limited rounds count. But from a purely recreational POU, the GP100 in whatever barrel length and finish suits you, is a huge win ...

Personal Defense - Ruger SP 101

Ruger entered the small frame, double action revolver market with the SP 101. Chambered for the 357 magnum cartridge and featuring a 5 shot cylinder, the SP 101 is a logical choice for concealed carry. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, tests this Ruger revolver for personal defense.

Ruger 10/22 at 200 Yards - Open Sights

Open sight target shooting with the Ruger 10/22 at 200 yards, .22 Long Rifle. Ammo is CCI Stinger 32 grain hollow points. The target is a standard-sized IPSC outline, steel, approximately 18" x 30". I took 25 slow-paced shots. This bullet should drop approximately 40 inches at 200 yards and reach the target in about half a second. There is an elevation drop from the shooting position to the target, which enabled holding 12-18" over the top. Wind was steady at 5-10 mph, gusting to 15; left to right. Video includes a second camera for the target cam. Toward the end of the shooting session, the underlying PIP audio/video track gets out of sync with the HD camera at the shooting position. Even though both cameras are supposedly recording at the same speed, the standard definition "target cam" seems to be a tad bit slower, and that becomes more obvious given the extended nature of this PIP footage compared to others I've posted. Couple of hundreds of a second makes a difference with overlaying tracks. The optimum solution to this is using a second HD camera at the target, same model, which is a short-term objective.

Ruger SR40c (Close-up)

A close-up look at the Ruger SR40c, another fine choice if you are looking for a small, powerful pistol at a very reasonable price. Even though it still doesn't quite replace my G27, I like it enough to buy it and keep it.
