The Witch And The Saint si another programmatic tone poem. It is baced upon the novel by Ulrike Schweikert and is constructed in five distinct sections. The opening depicts the birth of two twin sisters born in 1588 in Elwangen, Gremany. In those times, the birth of the twins was considered a bad omen and as the sisters grew up, it became clear that they had the gift of second sight and could predict future events. The thematic material repersenting both sisters is first introduced in this section along with a medieval, Gregorian chant-type motif. The second section of the piece is the development of Sibylla's theme. This sister led a horrible life and her gift was looked down upon. Many townspeople feared Sibylla and considered her to be a witch. After a breif transition, the theme representing the other sister, Helena, is introduced in it's entirety. The third section of the piece is the development of Helena's theme. The sister was sent away to a convent when she was a child. While at the convent, Helena is revered as a saint because of her visions. The fourth section of the work is a turbulent section repersenting the struggles both of these sisters had in their lives. Eventually, Sibylla is imprisoned and Helena returnes to the town to save her sister. The fifth section and the finale of the work depicts the return of and the rescue of her sister, Sibylla. As they are trying to escape, the sisters are captured once again and this time, for fear of being burnt at the <b>...</b>

Danse Macabre (first performed in 1875) is the name of opus 40 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based upon a poem by Henri Cazalis, on an old French superstition: Zig, zig, zig, Death in a cadence, Striking with his heel a tomb, Death at midnight plays a dance-tune, Zig, zig, zig, on his violin. The winter wind blows and the night is dark; Moans are heard in the linden trees. Through the gloom, white skeletons pass, Running and leaping in their shrouds. Zig, zig, zig, each one is frisking, The bones of the dancers are heard to crack— But hist! of a sudden they quit the round, They push forward, they fly; the cock has crowed. According to the ancient superstition, "Death" appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death has the power to call forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (represented by a solo violin with its E-string tuned to an E-flat in an example of scordatura tuning). His skeletons dance for him until the first break of dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year. The piece opens with a harp playing a single note, D, twelve times to signify the clock striking midnight, accompanied by soft chords from the string section. This then leads to the eerie E flat and A chords (also known as a tritone or the "Devil's chord") played by a solo violin, representing death on his fiddle. This project has been in my heart for a long time and Finally I've completed it. Danse Macabre or Dance Macabre is a brilliant piece of music in my opinion. I first fell in love with it when it was played during my music class in the third grade to introduce the instrument families. This music amazes me at how spooky and scary it can be yet it has a joyfulness about it. According to legend, "Death" appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance their dance of death for him while he plays his fiddle. His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year. This is my treat to you all for the Halloween season. You might like it or you may hate it but it is dear to me. Happy Halloweedn.

This originally aired on PBS in the 1980s featuring a poorly made up vampire host to introduce and discuss. It was also shown to me when I was in elementary school. One of the best short length Halloween animations ever created. Terrific illustrations. About the song: Danse macabre, by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, was an art song for voice and piano (first performed in 1872) with a French text by the poet Henri Cazalis which is based in an old French superstition. Two years later, the composer expanded and reworked the piece into a tone poem for orchestra, replacing the vocal line with a solo violin. The rest, they say, is history.
