Description: Using your chest is one way to control a ball out of the air. There are multiple styles, reasons and ways to control a soccer ball using your chest. Today we are learning the basic style to control a ball using your chest. This video is geared towards beginner players and their coaches but it of course can be applied to players of all ages and abilities. Key Points: 1. Spread your feet out about the width of your shoulders for balance 2. Lean back slightly, arms out to your sides, keep your shoulders straight on to the ball, not turned. 3. Have ball hit the center of your chest right below your clavicle bone and have it land towards your dominant foot 4. If the ball is coming slow you have to pop it up and forward some, if it is coming fast you need to cushion it in more. Think of receiving a pass with your feet. At college, in an electronics class' lab, we built a circuit to levitate a small metal soccer ball. It uses an electromagnet to attract the ball. An IR LED shines to a phototransistor and when the ball is pulled upward, the beam of light is blocked. Light shining on the phototransistor will send a signal into a LM741, which amplifies the signal. The amplified signal goes through a resistor in parallel with a capacitor to speed up the reaction time. Since the voltage after the resistor is small, it feeds another op amp when then drives a TIP41C power transistor. The power transistor then supplies enough current to the electromagnet to pull the ball upward. As it is pulled upward, the light is blocked some and less current flows into the first op-amp. Therefore the current in the electromagnet is less and the ball lowers. The cycle repeats itself so fast that the ball is kept in a levitating position. Of course the trim pot has to be adjusted very precisely to get it set just right.
