Twenty years ago, the citizens of communist East Germany were for the first time able to view the files kept on them by the Stasi, the dictatorship's secret police. Today these files fill 100 kilometers of shelves. And there are also around 16000 sacks of documents that Stasi agents shredded by hand. Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin are now constructing a super-computer that can put the fragments back together. The "snippet machine" is attracting interest from all over the world.

Das MfS war kein klassisches Abwehr- und Aufklärungsorgan, da seine Kompetenzen weit über die eines normalen Nachrichtendienstes hinausgingen. Im Gegensatz zu Nachrichtendiensten in westlichen Demokratien, wo es eine strikte Gewaltenteilung zwischen Exekutive, Legislative und Judikative gibt, hatte das MfS auch polizeiliche und staatsanwaltliche Befugnisse. Selbst die Überwachung und Verfolgung von Parteimitgliedern waren erlaubt, allerdings mussten solche Vorgänge von den Abteilungsleitern (Oberstleutnant und höher) erst genehmigt werden. So war das MfS primär ein Überwachungs- und Repressionsorgan der SED, das die DDR-Gesellschaft in allen Bereichen kontrollierte, und erst in zweiter Linie ein Auslandsnachrichtendienst. Durch Beschluss des SED-Politbüros vom 23. September 1953 wurde festgelegt, dass das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit als militärisches Organ sowohl als Inlands- als auch als Auslandsnachrichtendienst arbeiten sollte. Dies umfasste folgende Aufgabenbereiche: Durchführung von Agententätigkeit, z. B.: Kontrolle von Massenorganisationen und gezielte Zersetzung und Spaltung potenzieller oppositioneller Kreise, wie zum Beispiel Intellektuelle, Dissidenten, sowie der Kirche und deren Jugendgruppen. Umfassende Überwachung der DDR-Bürger und teilweise auch ihrer Angehörigen außerhalb der DDR unter Missachtung ihrer Bürgerrechte. Wurde im Jargon auch „Aufdeckung und Beseitigung feindlicher Zersetzungstätigkeiten" genannt. Dies erfolgte ua durch Bespitzeln, Zensur <b>...</b>

Two daughters, two pairs of parents, two families representing an estimated figure of some one million affected people in the former GDR. Time Without Parents tells the story of Jana Simon and Franziska Kriebisch who both grew up in the GDR. Das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit der DDR (kurz MfS oder Stasi, abwertend auch SSD) war der Inlands- und Auslandsgeheimdienst der DDR und zugleich Ermittlungsbehörde (Untersuchungsorgan) für „politische Straftaten". Das MfS war innenpolitisch vor allem ein Unterdrückungs- und Überwachungsinstrument der SED („Schild und Schwert der Partei") gegenüber der DDR-Bevölkerung, das dem Machterhalt diente. Dabei setzte es als Mittel Überwachung, Einschüchterung, Terror und die so genannte Zersetzung gegen Oppositionelle und Regimekritiker („feindlich-negative Personen") ein. Das MfS wurde am 8. Februar 1950 gegründet. Der Sprachgebrauch der SED, der das MfS als „Schild und Schwert der Partei" bezeichnete, beschreibt die ihm zugedachte Funktion im politisch-ideologischen System der DDR. Neben dem MfS gab es auch einen weiteren Nachrichtendienst in der DDR, die Militärische Aufklärung der Nationalen Volksarmee (militärischer Aufklärungsdienst) mit Sitz in Berlin-Treptow. Die Verwaltung Aufklärung wurde ebenso wie die Grenztruppen und die restliche NVA durch die Hauptabteilung I (MfS-Militärabwehr oder Verwaltung 2000) kontrolliert („abgesichert").
