STS-125 Landing

Space shuttle Atlantis landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California at 11:39 am EDT, on 24th May 2009, completing a 13-day journey of approximately 5.3 million miles in space. During a press conference held at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Associate Administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate Ed Weiler said, "Now, and only now can we declare this mission a total success -- the astronauts are safely on the ground." Weiler called NASA's Hubble Space Telescope the great comeback story. He said the public continues to be captivated by the telescope's images of the universe and he hopes to see Hubble operate into its third decade of service. NASA Launch Integration Manager Mike Moses agreed that this was a fantastic mission. "It's good to have Atlantis back here on the ground," said Moses. He also said the crew did a great job trying to get the shuttle back to Kennedy, even though the weather wouldn't cooperate. Mike Leinbach, NASA space shuttle launch director, congratulated the STS-125 crew and also commended the crew members who were ready and standing by in case space shuttle Endeavour was needed for a rescue mission.

STS 125 is likely to launch on October 8th 2008. STS-125 will serve as the fifth and final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope, with Atlantis carrying two new instruments to the orbital observatory, in addition to a replacement Fine Guidance Sensor and extra gyroscopes and batteries to allow the telescope to continue to function through 2013.

STS-125 Atlantis Shuttle Canada Arm Earth Fuel Tank Orbit Decaying

STS-125 Atlantis Shuttle Mission 20090511 Canada Arm Visible Earth Orbit Red Large External Fuel Tank (ET aka SWT for Standard Weight Tank) Spinning in Orbit (starting at 2 min 30 seconds into video) as it falls to the Earth - Awesome. Space garbage you'd not want to collide with that is for sure. Wait a moment that's not garbage that's the shuttle... now the fuel tank.... isn't that part of the shuttle too and thus not garbage? Yes, but now it's an IFO Space Garbage in a decaying orbit. You can see it tumble as it hits and interacts with the atmosphere, it's clear that something is altering it's smooth direction of travel in orbit. That would not happen if it wasn't in the atmosphere. It sure would be cool to see it burn and break up as it enters the atmosphere and crashes into the Indian or pacific oceans (hopefully missing everyone). It's impressive to have something man made so huge in orbit floating there. The awesome space shuttle, the awesome earth, the awesome space garbage, oh, fuel tank that did it's job, gravity in it's splendor. Gotta love it. NASA says that the footage of the external tank were shot thought the aft flight deck windows in HD, although this particular feed is just SD. These were the first HD pictures sent from the Shuttle! So the HD version is out there somewhere ET/SLWT Specifications * Length: 153.8 ft (46.9 m) * Diameter: 27.6 ft (8.4 m) * Empty Weight: 58500 lb (26500 kg) * Gross Liftoff Weight: 1680000 lb (760000 kg) en.wikipedia.org en ...

STS-125 Launch

Space shuttle Atlantis lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 11th May 2008, rising on twin columns of fire to embark on STS-125, the final shuttle mission to service NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Liftoff was right on time at 2:01 pm EDT following a countdown that proceeded relatively smoothly throughout the day. Late in the countdown, launch managers had to evaluate an unexpected ice formation on the liquid hydrogen umbilical, and a buildup of cumulus clouds threatened the favorable weather forecast. But those issues were quickly resolved, and in a post-launch press conference, NASA managers praised the launch team for its expertise and efficiency. "The teams here at (Kennedy Space Center) gave us a great vehicle, and ascent was good," said Bill Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for Space Operations. "It was a great start to a very challenging mission." During the 11-day mission's five spacewalks, astronauts will install two new instruments, repair two inactive ones and perform the component replacements that will keep the telescope functioning into at least 2014.

The move is referred to as "rollout." Now that the shuttle is in launch position, Atlantis' crew will arrive at Kennedy on Sept. 21 to participate in a full launch dress rehearsal, known as the terminal countdown demonstration test, scheduled for Sept. 22-24. Atlantis is targeted to launch Oct. 10. During the 11-day STS-125 mission, the shuttle's seven astronauts will install two new instruments in Hubble, as well as replace the Fine Guidance Sensor. Atlantis' crew members are Commander Scott Altman, Pilot Gregory C. Johnson and Mission Specialists John Grunsfeld, Mike Massimino, Megan McArthur, Andrew Feustel and Michael Good.

The launch of space shuttle Atlantis on May 11, 2009 as video-taped from the viewing area adjacent to the Apollo/Saturn Center on the western shore of Banana Creek at the Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Florida. This location is approx. 3.75 miles from the launch pad (SLC-39A). Although mine is a purely amateur effort in documenting this amazing event, you can still get a sense of the patriotic and enthusiastic atmosphere represented by the attending crowd. This mission is the last servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope and as such, has the designation SM4. The crew will use Atlantis robotic arm and orbiter boom extension to check out the spacecrafts underside and the leading edges of its wings. The inspections are conducted to see if any damage occurred to the heat shield during the climb to orbit that began when Atlantis lifted off at 2:01 pm EDT Monday from Kennedy Space Center, Fla. The crew members will check out tools they will use during the rendezvous with the telescope. They also are slated to check out spacesuits they will use during the missions five scheduled spacewalks

The launch of Atlantis on mission STS-125 5/11/09, from the NASA Causeway roughly 6 miles from pad 39A. This will be the last Hubble servicing mission, & arguably the most dangerous mission of the decade; hence the reason Endeavor is standing by on pad 39B if a rescue is needed. See the dolphin swimming just before liftoff? GREAT SOUND, so turn up the bass or wear a good pair of headphones, enjoy!

STS-125 Space Shuttle Launch from Titusville in HD

The launch of the space shuttle Atlantis as viewed from Titusville, Florida about 11 miles away. This was STS-125 on a mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. Sound takes about 5 seconds to travel one mile so noise from the engines took approximately 55 seconds to reach the camera. This video was captured with the Sony HDSR11 camcorder set on a tripod with as wide a field of view as was possible. Viewing the launch in person was a great experience and the flame appears much more vibrant than it does in any video with a bright deep golden orange color to the naked eye. Video shot Monday, May 11, 2009.

Shuttle Showcase: STS-125

After four previous trips to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope, it was time for the Shuttle to make one final service call to install new, advanced instruments, batteries, gyros and insulation on the astronomical icon. Following 5 complex spacewalks, Hubble was left virtually brand new --- and ready for many more years of unprecedented science.
