Uprising: Hip Hop & The LA Riots - SXSW 2012 Accepted Film

20 years after riots ripped through Los Angeles, "Uprising" documents how hip hop forecasted -- and some say ignited -- the worst civil unrest of the 20th century. The film revisits the riots in gripping detail and draws from a diverse collection of voices -- the rappers, rioters, victims, police officers, journalists and everyday citizens of South Central Los Angeles. The documentary traces the rise of dissent in Los Angeles in the 80's and 90's and explores why citizens chose to rise up violently against police abuse and perceived injustices.

The Civil Wars - "Barton Hollow": SXSW 2011 Showcasing Artist

In some ways, music doesn't get much more modest or minimalist than it is in the hands of The Civil Wars, a duo comprised of California-to-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White. They travel without a backup band, and on their first full-length album, Barton Hollow, the bare-bones live arrangements that fans hear on the road are fleshed out with just the barest of acoustic accoutrements. Each song is an intimate conversation, and no third wheels or dinner-party chatter are going to interrupt that gorgeous, haunting hush.

Brooke Fraser - "Something in the Water": SXSW 2011 Showcasing Artist

Fraser's confidence is rooted in a life-long history steeped in music. Her mom discovered her plinking out "Do-Re-Mi" from The Sound of Music on the piano when she was two, and made sure her daughter had access to instruments. Fraser grew up in New Zealand's capital city of Wellington, and her earliest musical memory is of watching her great-uncle Athol, "a one-armed trumpet player," practice circular breathing on his horn. At seven, she began piano lessons. At 12, she began writing songs after a music teacher asked her class to compose an original tune about Christmas. "I discovered that I felt at home in the process of creating words and melodies," she recalls. "And I've been writing ever since." Fraser fell in love with the confessional lyrics and timeless melodies of James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Paula Cole, and eventually began to play the guitar. In 2002, when she was 18, Fraser signed with Sony Music and moved to Auckland where she played regularly at local venues while she wrote the songs that would appear on her debut album, What To Do With Daylight. That album, released in New Zealand in 2003, debuted at No. 1 and achieved gold status the same week. It eventually went eight times platinum, selling more than 120000 copies in New Zealand alone, and remained in the Top 10 on the album charts for more than a year. The album spawned five Top 20 singles and made Fraser a star in her home country, leading to 2004 tours of Australia and New Zealand with ...

Waiting For Lightning - SXSW 2012 Accepted Film

From the producers of STEP INTO LIQUID, comes WAITING FOR LIGHTNING, the story of a young boy from a broken home in Vista, CA, whose passion for skateboarding would one day bring him and his creation, a ramp of prodigious and dangerous proportions, across many cultural and ideological boundaries to attempt the impossible: jump China's Great Wall on a skateboard. It's a film about how much abuse the body can sustain, how deep you have to dig to survive the betrayals of family, and how high and far dreams can fly.

Creed Bratton - Clip From "The Office": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist

"Bounce Back" is more than just the title of my new CD, it's what's happened with my life and my career. Sandwiched between my early success as a founding member of seminal 60s band The Grass Roots and my current job as a cast member on NBC's The Office were years where I really found out what I was made of. It's a great story if I do say so myself. It could have gone a-rye a million time but for some reason I always chose the fork in the road that kept me moving forward on my journey. I was raised by my mom in Coarsegold, California a town near Yosemite National Park. My father had died in World War Two so there was lots of extended family in Coarsegold to help my mom raise me. Music was in the family and I have vivid early memories listening to my Grandparents' band, "The Happy Timers". They played all the old Western Music popular in the 40's. I started out playing trumpet in grammar school and was 1st chair by my freshman year in high school. My grandfather showed me some chords on his old archtop guitar. I started listening to an old crystal radio set with one earplug. I kept it under my pillow and could get the Los Angeles radio stations at night. Once I heard Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Elvis, Duane Eddy and The Everly Brothers I was hooked on Rock and Roll. Around that time I got a Silvertone Guitar from the Sears catalog. It arrived at the ranch and I was in love. It was made by DanElectro and had the old lipstick pickups on it, with a silver metal flaked top. It ...

The City Dark: SXSW 2011 Accepted Film

THE CITY DARK chronicles the disappearance of darkness. When filmmaker Ian Cheney moves to New York City and discovers skies almost completely devoid of stars, a simple question -- what do we lose, when we lost the night? -- spawns a journey to America's brightest and darkest corners. Astronomers, cancer researchers, ecologists and philosophers provide glimpses of what is lost in the glare of city lights; blending a humorous, searching tone with poetic footage of the night sky, what unravels is an introduction to the science of the dark, and an exploration of the human relationship to the stars.

Daughter - "Love (Live at St. Giles In The Fields' Church)": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist

'The Wild Youth' is the new EP from 21 year old Elena Tonra aka Daughter. A collection of four dark, ethereal & beautiful new songs, 'The Wild Youth' showcases a young musician experimenting delicately with a rich array of songwriting ideas and yet still intent on pouring out her soul pure and unadulterated. Having launched with the stunning six-minute 'Love', a brooding, stark lament that shifts shape & form as it builds to it's startling crescendo, 'The Wild Youth' includes three more songs ('Home', 'Medicine' & 'Youth') that beautifully weave the intimacy and honesty of timeless, classic folk with the glacial, experimental soundscapes that draw to mind the work of Bjork & Jonsi Birgisson. Having made a series of demo tracks available at the end of 2010 via her social network pages, Daughter's star has gently risen, collecting fans one-by-one as these tracks were gradually shared amongst enthusiastic friends and bloggers. As the support grew Elena found herself moving - slowly, at first - up The Hype Machine. Within a month - and as the momentum grew - she\'d reached #3 in the Most Popular Song Chart. The Pimps of Joytime - "Janxta Funk": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist

If you have yet to encounter the Brooklyn-based band, The Pimps of Joytime, prepare to take a funky ride! The PJT's live events and recordings have captivated fans all across the country, as they have begun writing their own success story, show by show, and track by track. Bandleader Brian J is a charismatic and soulful visionary, whose well-crafted songs invite the listener to enter a world of infectious dance grooves and indelible melodies. Spending formative years in New York City, New Orleans and Los Angeles, Mista J honed his craft, becoming an accomplished live performer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. In 2005, Brian began to assemble a group of righteously soulful vocalists and musicians to assist in bringing to life the musical concept that would become The Pimps of Joytime. Recent collaborations with legendary artists Cyril and Art Neville of the Neville Brothers and Roy Ayers have helped vitalize the band's connection to its roots. Over the course of the past four years, The Pimps have evolved into a road tested and audience approved groove machine. They have excited crowds at over 100 club dates and festivals in 2009 alone, and are on target to exceed that volume in 2010. The exponential growth of the band's fan base can be partially attributed to an artful blend of musical styles, including elements of afrobeat ...
