Puccini's final masterpiece opens the season under the baton of Music Director Nicola Luisotti, who conducted this melodically rich, colorfully orchestrated work to great acclaim at London's Royal Opera House in 2009. This passionate tale of a princess whose cruelty masks her fear of love features some of the composer's most glorious music, including the stirring anthem "Nessun dorma." It will be performed by an outstanding cast led by Swedish soprano Iréne Theorin, "the world's reigning Turandot" (Opera Britannia); Adler Fellow Leah Crocetto, an "outlandishly gifted soprano" (San Francisco Chronicle); and Marco Berti, "one of the preeminent Italian singers of his generation" (MusicalCriticism.com). The lavish production, featuring David Hockney's "dazzling sets" (San Francisco Chronicle), returns in November with an equally impressive ensemble led by soprano Susan Foster, whose "acting is as impressive as her powerful, well-controlled, emotionally compelling voice" (Washington Post), and Walter Fraccaro, a "husky-voiced" tenor whose singing is "burnished and impassioned" (The New York Times).

Patricia Racette, "a dramatic soprano of the utmost subtlety and emotional power" (New York Post), plays the object of his desire. John Relyea, lauded by The New York Times for his "stentorian power [and] wily, seductive lyricism", is a superbly sinister Méphistophélès. Maurizio Benini, acclaimed for his mastery of this gorgeous score, conducts in a classic production.

A crafty criminal. A suspicious sheriff. A frontier woman with a tender heart who knows how to shoot a gun. If they sound like characters from a classic Western, they are—except their gunfights and poker games are set to a brilliant, blazing score. A love triangle set during the California Gold Rush, the work Puccini considered "the best of my operas," returns home for the first time in three decades in celebration of its 100th anniversary. Nicola Luisotti conducts a rip-snortin' cast led by Deborah Voigt, "a soprano of penetrating power and clarity" (The New York Times), and Salvatore Licitra, "a tenor at the top of his form" (San Francisco Chronicle).

An idealistic artist, a celebrated singer and a corrupt police chief engage in a fierce battle of wills in this tempestuous tale of cruelty and deception. With its themes of political intrigue, sexual intimidation and official hypocrisy, Puccini's great melodrama set in 1800 is anything but dated. Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, praised by The New York Times for her lushly beautiful sound and poignant vulnerability, makes her Company debut in the title role. Baritone Lado Ataneli (Scarpia) has been praised by the Los Angeles Times as possessing one of the healthiest, roundest, most mellifluous voices on the planet. Behind the Scenes at SF Opera's Ring

Almost the first thing that anyone learns about Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung is that it's huge. Its four long operas place incredible demands on the technical side (fire, dragons, flying horses, and lots more) and requires a huge orchestra — the San Francisco Opera production has 89 players, literally all they could squeeze into the pit, including some musicians playing offstage. The singers are onstage singing for hours at a stretch. Young Siegfried, in the opera that bears his name, has a particularly impossible burden, and it takes somewhat of a daredevil mentality even to attempt the role on a major stage. But do you know about all the little details that add up to creating a Ring? All the small costume details, coordinating and running dozens of props across the entire epic, putting the supertitles together in the best way, insuring continuity in the production, coordinating the hundreds of music-and-stage-action cues, making rehearsal schedules work, plus inventing special effects, and more? In this video, SFCV takes you backstage to find out about all the myriad details that The Ring requires in order for the saga even to make it to the stage. This really is not your ordinary opera production. This video was produced for SFCV by Tal Skloot with the support of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The superb cast is headed by Polish tenor Piotr Beczala (Tamino in 2007's The Magic Flute) and Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu (Magda in 2007's La Rondine), who has wowed critics and audiences with both the beauty of her voice and the depth of her characterizations. "The opulent-voiced Gheorghiu thoroughly inhabited Mimì in an emotionally convincing, multifaceted way you don't see or hear very often," said the Los Angeles Times.

The question was never an academic one for Rick Rescorla, a British-born adventurer who fought in Vietnam before settling in New York as head of security for a brokerage firm based in the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, his extraordinary courage and calmness in a crisis paid off: Rescorla led all of the 2700 people under his care to safety—literally singing them down the stairs—before heading back into the burning building for one last check. He never emerged. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the devastating terrorist attacks, San Francisco Opera presents the world premiere of Heart of a Soldier, which tells the dramatic story of Rescorla's extraordinary life. The Company's latest commission features a dynamic and soulful score by Christopher Theofanidis, "one of the world's most sought-after living composers" (Seattle Times). Baritone Thomas Hampson, renowned for his "clarion power and burnished tone" (Los Angeles Times), sings the role of Rick Rescorla in this story of enduring friendship and late-found love. A powerful god finds himself torn by conflicting loyalties in the second installment of Wagner's majestic Ring cycle, which features the famous "Ride of the Valkyries." Director Francesca Zambello gives this epic tale of an emotionally volatile father and his disobedient children a distinctly American touch while honoring its mythic roots. Donald Runnicles, whose command of Wagner's music "offers one of the city's most reliable musical thrills" (San Francisco Chronicle), conducts a world-class cast including two stunning sopranos: Nina Stemme, the sublime Senta of San Francisco Opera's The Flying Dutchman (2004), and Eva-Maria Westbroek, whose Wagnerian vocalism was called "outstanding" by London critics. Mark Delavan, hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as a "robust and commanding" Wotan in the 2008 Ring cycle opera Das Rheingold, continues the journey. "Prepare to be utterly amazed," raved the Washington DC Metro Weekly. "This is a supremely cohesive operatic and theatrical experience, a tremendously absorbing ride in which we thrill to Wagner's brilliant, evocative score while realizing just how relevant the work is to modern audiences. Time will fly like a Valkyrie on the wind."

George Gershwin miraculously melded classical music, popular song, jazz, blues and spirituals in this quintessentially American masterpiece that tells the poignant story of a crippled beggar, the headstrong woman he loves, and the community that sustains them both. General Director David Gockley, whose association with Porgy and Bess has restored it to a mainstay of the operatic repertoire, presents director Francesca Zambello's critically acclaimed production. Alan Rich of LA Weekly calls her staging "by some distance, the finest and most enjoyable of the couple of dozen productions I have attended of Porgy and Bess." "Opening Porgy and Bess in 1935 was an exceptionally brave move for George Gershwin. He insisted on casting African American artists in all the roles despite the prevailing segregationist and racist views of the era. The complex issues of race and class were brought to the very center of Broadway, the great white way, with extraordinary, unforgettable music and an explosive love story set against the backdrop of Charlestons Catfish Row." --Stanley E. The Ring part 4: Götterdämmerung - 3 minute Preview from San Francisco Opera

The cycle reaches its transcendent climax with this world-premiere production, a suspenseful tale of bravery and sacrifice, treachery and betrayal, destruction and renewal. The sacred union of Siegfried and Brünnhilde is threatened by three scheming siblings, one of whom was sired by Alberich to take possession of the ring. Driven by greed, their actions inevitably lead to chaos and destruction, until Brünnhilde—wise, pure of heart, heroic—steps forward to return the universe to its natural order in an act of self-sacrifice. Leading a 2007 concert performance of this towering masterpiece, conductor Donald Runnicles proved he is "clearly among the most insightful, potent Wagnerians of his day" (Sunday Times of London). "His account was of spectacular brilliance and high, churning intensity." London's The Independent called Runnicles "a seasoned Wagnerite" whose "sense of pace, paragraphing and climax was nigh on perfect." English tenor Ian Storey, who triumphed as Tristan in Tristan and Isolde at La Scala, makes his Company debut and role debut as Siegfried. When Storey "opens his mouth, you remember what makes opera tick" (Times, London). The Story: Siegfried gives Brünnhilde the ring as a token of their union and sets off for new adventures. Nadja Michael talks about her approach to singing the role of Salome at the San Francisco Opera. Considered scandalous when it premiered a century ago with its provocative "Dance of the Seven Veils," Richard Strauss' adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play has not lost its ability to shock. Set in Biblical times, this erotically charged opera centers on a tangled triangle: the persecuted John the Baptist, a lecherous King Herod and the monarch's pathologically seductive stepdaughter, Salome. German soprano Nadja Michael is "indolent, sexy and scary" in the title role, giving a performance that "blazes with dramatic intensity," according to London critics. Hvorostovsky in Moscow DVD Trailer

Hvorostovsky in Moscow with guest star Sondra Radvanovsky Purchase the DVD direct from Delos: bit.ly A Magical match Made in Moscow In June 2008, Dmitri Hvorostovsky invited Sondra Radvanovsky to be his guest star in the prestigious Moscow concert series "Hvorostovsky and Friends," with conductor Constantine Orbelian and the Philharmonia of Russia. This glamorous occasion, captured on film for Russian television, marked these artists' first-ever musical collaboration -- and proved to be a historic event that documented for posterity one of those all-too-rare instances of magical artistic alchemy between two great opera stars. Their electrifying performance was an instant sensation, and a potent preview of the two stars' effusively acclaimed later appearances together in Il Trovatore at Covent Garden, The Met and The San Francisco Opera. Delos recorded the live concert, to be released later as the critically-acclaimed CD, "Verdi Opera Scenes" (DE 3403). The Russian TV show, featuring their national baritone hero and his dazzling guest, was broadcast throughout the Russian Federation. Upon obtaining that film footage, Delos collaborated with California film editor Steve Scoville, who expertly synched the footage with Delos's concert audio. The result, available for the first time on this DVD, takes the viewer/listener to Moscow's Great Hall for the concert's most unforgettable moments, with stunning "you are there" sonic and visual impact.
