Who knows where the time goes - Fairport Convention

Fairport Convention were one of the most innovative and influential British bands of the late 1960's and are still recording and touring today. The lead singer during their greatest period was Sandy Denny who was in my opinion the greatest female vocalist of that or any era. The enormous emotional range of her voice has been unsurpassed by any other singer. Sandy died tragically in 1978 of a cerebral haemorrhage after falling down a flight of stairs.

Who Knows Where the Time Goes Sandy Denny Fairport DEMO

Across the purple sky all the birds are leaving Sandy Denny's home demo recording as she writes this amazing song, later recorded with Fairport Convention and covered by many artists including Eva Cassidy, Nina Simone, Nanci Griffith. I've put together this compilation of photos and sleeve art from Sandy Denny's all too brief career, with Fairport Convention and beyond, to mark what would have been her 60th birthday 06/Jan/2007 and try to celebrate her amazing talent. The soundtrack is Sandy's home demo recording of her own song 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' circa 1967, from the hard-to-find demos compilation CD 'Borrowed Thyme' and I've tried to pick pictures and transitions to suit it. It's my first attempt to make or upload one of these, hope it works OK.... Pete

Sandy Denny - Solo

This is a lovely track called Solo, by Sandy Denny. I hadn't heard of Sandy until 1993 when Fish (from Marillion) covered this song. I found this version of Sandy singing it a while ago, and so when I realised there weren't many of her songs on Youtube, I thought I'd add this.

Sandy Denny

This was just after Sandy Denny left Fairport convention in 1970. Fotheringay weren't altogether successful commercially although band members themselves were of a fine standard. After this Sandy Denny made solo albums. There is very little film available these days of those wonderful times of fairport with Sandy Denny and so i think we should preserve any renminders.

Sandy Denny - The Music Weaver

The Music Weaver (Sandy Denny) I'm a long way from you, I'm a long way from home. And who cares for the feeling Of being alone. The notes and the words They will always unfold And I'm left with a manuscript That will grow old And the secret's all told anyway. So the song it is yours, And the song it is mine. And a cold wind it blows Through good fortunes of time. The hobo he leaves When the going is bad And the music he weaves Is so gentle and sad. But freedom he has anyway.

Sandy Denny - Full Moon

Sandy Denny - Full Moon "Everybody else has gone, But you're still here with me. All the world is sleeping by and by. Through the windowpane The frosted light is streaming in, Full moon sailing high across the sky. Tonight is like the night when we first met. I always knew I never would forget you. Come and hold me close, I miss you more than I can say. I can't remember how I pass the time (with you away), Wondering if you'll ever know How much you mean to me. I never dreamed there'd be a change of mind. Lover, this is where I want to stay. Maybe it could always be this way. I recall you said to me A long, long time ago, Don't you lose direction in the crowd (I think you could) But when I did you found me And I didn't even know. I hardly even knew you were around and understood. I was reaching out each moment to be free. You were all those things I'd never be. Gentle music, rock away the sadnesses in me. Rock away my lonely yesterdays, Like pennies on the ocean 'Til no trace of them I see, 'Till moonlight shows no ripples on the waves. And then the clear reflection will remain. Perhaps the same reflection Of that same full moon."

This song is called "The Sea" from the first Fotheringay record. The late Sandy Denny is a musician, singer and songwriter deserving of much more recognition. She is a true artist who, perhaps now in this time of lady gaga, will be newly appreciated.

A live fan recording from the York University 10/14/72. As with many vintage concert recordings, it has some flaws, but it's worth the ride. This tape has never sounded better,as I extracted a lot of audience noises and coughing( oh those harsh little brass hash pipes from India : ) LOL ) but a few coughs, and assorted glitches remain.Aside from pro recordings, this is possibly the best fan tape left to us. So spool back to the din of yesteryear as fair Sandy takes the stage..... Johnny Flynn live : Sandy Denny tribute : QEH London : 1 December 2008

Johnny Flynn performs two songs live at The Lady : A Tribute To Sandy Denny concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on 1 December 2008. Johnny performs Stranger To Himself and It'll Take A Long Time. 2008 marked the 30th anniversary of the death of Sandy Denny. To perform her songs, the organisers selected not only her contemporaries and musicians that had worked with her in Fairport Convention and Fotheringay, but many young artists described as "admirers" of Sandy Denny, including Johnny. By including a new generation of folk artists, the organisers hoped to bring the music of Sandy Denny to a new audience; it worked for me, I now own three Sandy Denny albums! It is in that spirit that I upload this clip. Anyone who has found this by searching for Johnny Flynn should really take the time to check out some Sandy Denny - and Sandy Denny fans would do well to have a listen to Johnny's album A Larum I think they'd like what they hear! Sandy Denny's original version of It'll Take A Long Time and the demo version of Stranger To Himself can both be found on the excellent No More Sad Refrains : The Anthology compilation.
