Recorded August 25, 2008. Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily). The area of Sardinia is 9301 square miles. The island is surrounded by the French island of Corsica, the Italian Peninsula, Tunisia and the Balearic Islands. Sardinia is a constitutional part of Italy, with a special statute of regional autonomy under the Italian Constitution. In this video first we traveled to the north side of the island where there were dramatic views of the Gulf of Porto Conte at Cape Caccia area. Next w visited Nuraghe di Palmavera. At the core of the site is the remains of a palace which is surrounded by a tight cluster of around fifty circular huts. The palace was founded around the fourteenth century BC which is during the Middle Copper Period and consists of a central tower with an additional elliptical bastion and second tower that were both added at a later date. The video concludes with a nice view of the cliffs along the coast as we sail away from the Italian island of Sardinia. From: timvp.com

Alghero (l'Alguer in Catalan and S'Alighèra in Sardinian), is a town of about 42000 inhabitants (down from 54300 inhabitants since early 20th century) in Italy. The area of today's Alghero was settled since pre-historical times. The so-called Ozieri culture was present here in the 4th millennium BCE while the nuraghe civilization was present from around 1500 BC for, and traces of Phoenician buildings have been found not far from the city. Due to his strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea Alghero was born around a fortified port, founded around 1102 by the Genoese Doria family. The Doria ruled it for centuries, apart from a brief period under the rule of Pisa (1283-1284). In 1353 it was captured by the Aragonese under Bernardo de Cabrera, and could later grow thanks to the arrival of Catalan colonists: in the early 16th century Alghero received the status of King's City (ciutat de l'Alguer) and developed economically. The Catalano-Aragonese were followed by Habsburg Spain, whose dominion, ended in 1702, brought some decadence to the city. In 1720 Alghero and Sardinia were handed over to the Piedmont based House of Savoy. Around 1750 a wide channel was excavated to improve the defensive stand of the peninsula. In 1821 famine led to a revolt of the population, which was bloodily suppressed. At the end of the same century Alghero was de-militarized and, during the Fascist era, part of the surrounding marshes was reclaimed and <b>...</b>

Dur to its strategically important site, Villasimius' territory was inhabited since prehistoric times, as testified by nuraghe (19th-6th centuries BC), Phoenician-Carthaginian (7th-2nd centuries BC) and Roman (3rd century BC-6th century AD) remains. During the giudicati (Sardinian kingdoms), Aragonese and Spanish dominations, the territory suffered numerous pirate raids, and became increasingly depopulated. The village name was, at least from the 13th century, Carbonara; this was repopulated from the early 19th century, when it was under the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont, becoming a comune in 1838. Villasimius' economy was traditionally based on agriculture and shepherding and, from 1875, to the extraction of granite.
