The Savoy Hotel - Saying Goodbye

Sold in 2004 to Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal (19th richest man in the world). The famous Savoy hotel first opened in 1889. It was refurbished in 1926 and 1927 and symbolised the glamour and beauty of the roaring twenties, but in 2007 it closed for a total refurbishment which took 3 years. Everything inside was ripped out and modernized. (even the dance floor).

Savoy - Velvet

Savoy - Velvet - Music Video : Savoy are a Norwegian-American rock trio consisting of Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (famous from Norwegian band a-ha) (vocals/guitars/bass/keyboards), Lauren Savoy (vocals/guitars) and Frode Unneland (drums/percussion/backing vocals). The band was formed in 1994 and has released 5 studio albums to date. Savoy, unlike Waaktaar-Savoy's other band a-ha, has a certain down-to-earth indie rock approach to their music. All songs are composed by Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Lauren Savoy. Lauren herself is known as a film maker, and Frode Unneland is one of Norway's best drummers known from the Bergen music scene as drummer with Chocolate Overdose and Popium. He has also drummed for Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche.

It was located between 140th and 141st Streets on Lenox Avenue. The Savoy was a popular dance venue from the late 1920s to the 1950s and many dances such as Lindy Hop became famous here. It was known downtown as the "Home of Happy Feet" but uptown, in Harlem, as "the Track". Unlike the 'whites only' policy of the Cotton Club, the Savoy Ballroom was integrated where white and black Americans danced together. Virtuosic dancers, however, excluded others from the northeast corner of the dance floor, now referred to as the "Cat's Corner," a term not used at the time. Chick Webb was the leader of the best known Savoy house band during the mid-1930s.

A very intriguing video to a Brilliant song. The beginning of the video shows fragments of "Hunters in the snow", a painting by Pieter Brueghel, Beautifully done. Paul Waaktaar-Savoy still is one of the best songwriters of our time. Such a shame he still isn't fully recognized for all the Brilliant stuff he wrote... I dedicate this song to Sally Roberts.

Louis Armstrong - Savoy Blues (1927)

Louis Armstrong (Aug.4,1901 Jul.6,1971), nicknamed Satchmo, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer. Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an innovative cornet and trumpet virtuoso, Armstrong was a foundational influence on jazz, shifting the music's focus from collective improvisation to solo performers. With his distinctive gravelly voice, Armstrong was an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also greatly skilled at scat singing, or wordless vocalizing. Renowned for his charismatic stage presence and deep, instantly recognizable voice, Armstrong's influence extended well beyond jazz, and by the end of his career in the '60s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general: critic Steve Leggett describes Armstrong as "perhaps the most important American musician of the 20th century." Jack The Toad - SAVOY BROWN

-- Well, I'll Be Blowed!! It's Jack the Toad!!! -- From (the best) reviewer; chris meesey Food Czar: (in part) 'An epic of the Wild West....a dusty street....two lusty gunfighters fight it out to the finish....and the singer is....British??? That's "Jack the Toad," the title track from the most fun album Savoy Brown ever recorded. Imagine Phil Collins singing the blues, and you've got Jackie Lynton. Jackie's wonderful vocal melodramatics on the title song, the best Western epic sung by a Brit since "Theme From an Imaginary Western," sung with great feeling by Felix Pappalardi.' Judy Garland "Stompin' at the Savoy" 1936

This is Judy, two days after her 14th birthday. Recorded Friday, June 12, 1936, this is her earliest Decca recording available. Written by Edgar Sampson, Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, and Andy Razaf, Judy is backed by Bob Crosby and his Orchestra. This record was intended to promote Judy's popularity as MGM tried to discover film vehicles for her. This record features "Swing Mister Charlie" as its b-side, and if requested, I'll post that. What a voice! There has never been a singer since! Judy did not record for Decca until over a year later. This was her last Decca recording session done in New York until 1945.

Walk Away Renee - Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy

From the 2006 album by Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy - Adieu False Heart - a superb cover of "Walk Away Renee." Gorgeous harmony. The song, written by Michael Brown, Bob Calilli, Tony Sansone, was recorded by The Left Banke in 1966. It was also a hit for the Four Tops in 1968. I think this is a painfully beautiful song. It has been covered by dozens of artists; one of my favorite covers is by Jimmy LaFave.
