"There has been too much discussion in this country -- not just from Republicans, but from Democrats alike -- that we should be making cuts in Social Security. That is wrong," Sen. Bernie Sanders said to a standing ovation from more than 3000 labor leaders who attended the United Steelworkers convention in Las Vegas in August 2011.

Saying he was prepared to speak "as long as possible" against a tax deal between the White House and congressional Republicans, Sen. Bernie Sanders took to the Senate floor to make the case against deepening the deficit and widening the income gap in America by extending Bush-era tax breaks for the very wealthy. "I am simply here today to take as long as I can to explain to the American people the fact that we have got to do a lot better than this agreement provides," Sanders began. After eight and a half hours of speaking without leaving the Senate floor, Sanders brought his day-long stand to a close Friday night. He concluded, "If the American people stand up and say, we can do better than this, that we don't need to drive up the national debt by giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires, that if the American people are prepared to stand -- and we're prepared to follow them -- I think we can defeat this proposal. I think we can come up with a better proposal which better reflects the needs of the middle class and working families of our country and, to me, most importantly, the children of our country. And with that, Madam President, I would yield the floor."

As the debate over deficits ramped up in Washington on Monday, Sen. Bernie Sanders laid out the compelling case not to slash programs for working families. Any deficit reduction package must rely on new revenue for at least half the reduction in red ink, he added in a major address in the Senate. Sanders spoke at length about what caused deficits (wars, Wall Street bailouts, tax breaks for the rich) and how to shrink them (more revenue from the wealthiest Americans to match spending cuts). He urged fellow senators not to yield to Republican congressional leaders who "acted like schoolyard bullies" when they walked out of budget negotiations. He summed up the situation in a letter to the president that had been signed by more than 16000 people by the time he completed his speech. Sign the letter » sanders.senate.gov

As Social Security emerged as a target in White House budget negotiations, Sen. Bernie Sanders insisted that the retirement program must not be cut as part of any deficit reduction deal. "Let us be clear," Sanders said. "Social Security has not contributed one nickel to our deficit or our national debt." The program that benefits more than 50 million seniors and disabled has a $2.6 trillion surplus, he stressed, and will be able to provide full benefits for every eligible American for the next 25 years. "I am especially disturbed that President Obama is considering cuts in Social Security after he campaigned against cuts in 2008," Sanders added.

More than 300 people jammed Sen. Bernie Sanders' town meeting at Montpelier High School Nov. 6 focused on how to save the US Postal Service. Sanders (I-Vt.) said he will introduce legislation this week to address the Postal Service's financial woes without resorting to drastic cutbacks in service and massive layoffs. He blamed the Postal Service's money troubles largely on accounting issues, including a law requiring it to set aside retiree health and retirement benefits far in advance. Sanders criticized Postal Service management for not focusing on smarter ways to solve their financial problems. "Our goal must be to make the post office smarter and more competitive. We should not be engaged in a series of actions which could eventually lead to the destruction of the Postal Service," he said. Read more: sanders.senate.gov
