Hands on with the HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio Not to be confused with the Sensation XE, HTC is bringing us another Beats by Dr. Dre-equipped device called the Sensation XL and we were lucky enough to go hands-on at CTIA. Immediately you'll notice that, as a whole, HTC's behemoth is a very attractive device; the aluminum gives it a quality feel and the glossy white finish (with ear beats headphones to match) and large 4.7-inch Super LCD display really make widgets, photos and webpages pop -- one thing to note, however, is that the screen resolution is 480 x 800, but I have to say that it was still very beautiful with great viewing angles. On the inside, while not as exceptional as the Sensation XE, the Sensation XL comes with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor along with HSPA 14.4 network support and an 8-megapixel camera on back capable of recording 720p HD video. Strangely, because this is a device aimed at audiophiles, the Sensation XL only comes with 16GB of onboard storage that is not expandable. Still, the Sensation XL is something music fans, especially those who have experienced Beats technology, will really enjoy. The bad news is that the Sensation XL will never be available stateside, but don't count out a tweaked version of the phone showing up on our shores sometime in the future. HTC Sensation XL Unboxing & Hands On! At what size does a phone become too big? That answer will obviously differ from person to person, but the popular consensus among handset makers, at least at the moment, seems to be bigger is better. Just direct your attention to the recent Galaxy S II Skyrocket, 4.5-inch; Droid Razr, 4.3-inch; and HTC Vivid, 4.5-inch. We're not complaining, though, as the 4.7-inch Super LCD on the HTC Sensation XL is a joy to behold -- the iPhone's 3.5-inch screen is puny in comparison. After many years of staring at monitors and smartphone screens, the old eyes have begun to fail, so bigger screened offerings are always welcome, and the Sensation XL's is beautiful. When we first got our hands on the Sensation XL back at CTIA, one of the first things we noticed was how beautifully designed the device is. For someone with small hands, the phone's size may at first seem overwhelming, but because of the Sensation's thickness (9.9mm) it quickly becomes a non-issue. While that may seem thick, the height and width size makes it seem small, though it may not be the most pocketable device. The white color pops as well, and the brushed silver back is nice to the touch. Other Sensation XL specs include Android 2.3 with HTC Sense UI 3.5, 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 8-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording and 1.3 front-facing camera. The HTC Sensation XL has landed, leaving a sizable footprint behind. While it picks up the naming convention from HTC's previously dual-core flagship series and some Beats audio accreditation on the way, it looks pretty damn familiar to another member of the family. Yes, the family's Windows Phone flagship, the Titan certainly tickled our fancy -- no other phone had landed on that nascent OS with such a screen. But the Sensation XL faces phones both bigger (and only slightly smaller) in the increasingly crowded world of Android. At around $723 (£450), is the XL's single-core processor enough? Is that glossy WVGA screen still sharp enough at this size? How does this one compare to previous Sensations, and perhaps more importantly, Samsung's even bigger not-so-heavyweight? The HTC Sensation XL bears a more than passing resemblance to its Windows Phone cousin, the Titan. In fact, most of the technical specifications are identical, with matching 4.7-inch screens, identical camera specifications and and generally the same look and feel. There are some differences; the XL is another Beats-branded handset, and arrives with a pair of Dre-endorsed in-ear buds, and there are subtle differences to the shaping of the handset. The Sensation XL has some sizable heft to it, making it yet another handset pushing the boundaries of how much touchscreen we can fit into our collective pockets. TAIWANESE PHONE MAKER HTC kindly gave us a demonstration of its upcoming Sensation XL smartphone. This is the third of the Sensation family of smartphones from HTC and we only heard about the first one less than a month ago. The Sensation XL is rather large as you can gather from the name with a 4.7in screen accompanied by a Qualcomm 1.5GHz single-core processor. As well as being the biggest Sensation smartphone it's also the thinnest at 9.9mm compared to 11.3mm. It will come with an 8MP camera that has a 28mm wide-angle lens. The handset will be available next month.
