Scarborough Settler's Lament
A beautifully written song by someone a long time ago. It appears that the song has been attributed to many authors as well as it's melody. The Penguin Book of Canadian Folk Songs attributes the lyrics to Sandy Glendenning circa 1840 and states the tune was by Fowke. According to the notes on the The Tannahill Weavers album "Land Of Light," the lyrics were by Alexander Glendinning and the tune is William Marshall's Miss Admiral Gordon's Strathspey (1781). It also states that Robert Burns used the tune for I Love My Jean. There is some suggestion that Miss Gordon was, in turn, a reconstruction of the song tune The Lowlands of Holland (Scots Musical Museum 1788). Although Lowlands was published later, it was supposed to have been in a manuscript collection of an earlier date. However, the manuscript was lost and the earlier date cannot be verified.* The tune is also known as Scarborough Settler's Lament. Scarborough is now a borough of Toronto. The Highland Clearances were as great a tragedy for the Highlands as Culloden. Thousands of crofters were forcibly removed from their land by the Highland chieftans. Many settled in Canada.

On Tuesday 21st September, a group of about 100 settlers entered the Palestinian village of Asira al-Qibiliya near Nablus and began attacking residents, witnesses said. A correspondent said stones were being thrown by both sides and that some of the settlers were armed and had fired their weapons. Shortly afterward, Israeli troops and border police arrived and fired rubber bullets and tear gas to try and control the situation, the correspondent said. Several villagers were injured including a Palestinian journalist, Ayman Noubany, who was beaten by settlers. He was taken to Rafedia Hospital in Nablus, Palestinian Red Crescent medics said. Medics also said a 14-year-old boy, Aref Aref, was taken to hospital after being hit by a tear-gas canister, with the account corroborated by a watchdog group which is monitoring settler attacks as part of a new campaign. The marches came as the Palestinians prepare to formally ask the United Nations on Friday to admit a Palestinian state as a member of the world body. www.maannews.net

They suffer severe and frequent harassment at the hands of the settlers. 14-year-old Fida' Abu 'Ayesha has taken to using the camera as a form of protection, and as a way of documenting her reality. This is some of her footage, filmed between July 2006 and August 2007. In January 2007, B'Tselem launched it's camera distribution project, a video advocacy project focusing on the Occupied Territories. We provide Palestinians living in high-conflict areas with video cameras, with the goal of bringing the reality of their lives under occupation to the attention of the Israeli and international public, exposing and seeking redress for violations of human rights.

See: www.telrumeidaproject.org In May 2005, a group of teenage settler girls attacked the students and teachers at Qurtaba School, blocking their way out of the school as a police officer filmed and soldiers watched. The settlers sing and chant in Hebrew, "There is no Palestine, this is Israel" and "there are no Palestinians." Settler boys in the street then blocked the stairs by stoning the students as they tried to come down the stairs. The students scream and run, but are blocked from every direction. The police and soldiers do not protect the students. Documentarian Terje Carlsson filmed this incident.

Settler attacks a Palestinian family in Hebron
Violence erupted as local Palestinians were attacked by a settler group, with punches thrown and a large glass bottle of vodka hurled, narrowly missing a young Palestinian's head. The local Palestinians, including children, were then forced up onto a nearby road as the army intervened. A group of 8 settler men simultaneously cornered the 2 international HRWs who were filming the attack, attempting to steal and break their camera. The HRWs were repeatedly punched in the body and face as one of the settlers managed to grab the camera before police finally intervened. However, rather than destroy the tape, the settlers carelessly threw it in to a nearby skip where it was quickly rescued with the tape intact, though the camera was in fact broken.

settlers attack Palestinians and Israeli supporters in Kfar Qaddum. The attack took place at a Palestinian house on land which is recognized as private Palestinian land even by the Israeli army. The settlers have invaded the house and renamed the place Shvut Ami. After settlers were evacuated by the army the Palestinian owners of the land along with Israeli supporters attempted to take hold of the house. In no time, dozens of settlers arrived and soon began attacking the Palestinians and their supporters. After making a token effort to prevent the settlers from returning to the house the border police stood by and watched as the attacks continued. Only hours earlier the border police had about 100 troops available but when it was time to protect Palestinians from settler attack less than 10 soldiers were assigned to the place. Those present did not even make a serious attempt to carry out the stated goal of evacuating the settlers from the house.
