Marlena Shaw "California Soul" (1969)
"California Soul" is a pop-soul tune written by Ashford & Simpson, issued originally as a single by American pop quintet The Fifth Dimension in late 1968. It was also covered by Motown vocal duo Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell the next year and was the duo's last single together when released in early 1970. Both the Fifth Dimension's version and the Gaye/Terrell version were modest charted hits. The original performed better reaching number twenty-five on the pop singles chart, while Marvin and Tammi's cover reached number fifty-six pop but never charted R&B. The duet was released after Terrell's tragic death from a brain tumor in March 1970. The song was a socially conscious-type of song advocating love and peace. In 1969 Bluenote singer Marlena Shaw also did a version of the song which is now featured in a Dockers commercial circa 2008. The Diplo remix appears on the Verve Remixed volume 4 compilation album. The song is also featured in The Italian Job (2003 film), starring Mark Wahlberg. The song is sampled by Gang Starr in their song "Check the Technique." Additionally, a sample of the chorus from the Marlena Shaw version was used by Adam Freeland in his song "Mind Killer" aka "FEAR", which was featured in the 2001 video game Rez.

George Bernard Shaw Defends Hitler, Mass Murder
PLEASE READ: In this clip from the 2008 film "The Soviet Story", we see that George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated progressive playwright defended Hitler, advocated killing those who can't justify their existence and called for the development of lethal gas 10 years before the national socialists in Germany did exactly that. George Bernard Shaw was one of the left's most revered figures and the only person besides Al Gore to win both an Oscar and a Nobel prize. In this clip Snore documents three points that many viewers find disturbing: 1. Shaw was a vocal supporter of Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini 2. Shaw supported mass killing of the unproductive 3. Shaw advocated creating a Zyklon-B type gas to allow more "humane" mass killing The historical record for these claims is clear, but many posters dispute the second point by stating (without support) that Shaw was being sarcastic. Unfortunately, this is clearly not the case as is clear from reading the broad context of Shaw's writings. When Shaw's controversial statements on eugenics were reported in the media, he did not dispute them or claim that the quotes were taken out of context. I welcome anyone to challenge the director on these points, but please provide specific support for any claims rather than just stating your own wistful thinking on the topic. Born Marlina Burgess, 22nd September 1942, New Rochelle, New York, USA Marlena Shaw is a versatile vocalist, encompassing Jazz and Soul vocal stylings effortlessly. Marlena was born in New Rochelle, New York. Her uncle Jimmy Burgess introduced her to the recordings of Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. In 1952, Jimmy took her on stage at the Apollo Theater in Harlem to sing with him and his band. Her mother did not want a young Marlena to go on tour with her uncle and refused to let her go. As she grew Marlena bought records by Al Hibbler, a vocalist who had a big influence on her singing style. Her mother then enrolled Marlena into the New York State Teachers College in Potsdam (now known as the State University of New York at Potsdam) to study music. For some time in 1963 she worked around New England with a trio led by the Jazz trumpeter, Howard McGhee. Due to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival with Howard and his band, Marlena suddenly departed the group following an argument with one of the band members. Marlena auditioned for the Columbia label talent scout John Hammond, however, nerves got the better of her, so she continued to play at small clubs in 1964 until 1966. In 1966 when she performed at a gig with the Playboy Club chain in Chicago, where she met with representatives of the music label Chess <b>...</b>
