There's a major search and rescue operation underway in Japan. 300 hundred military planes and 40 ships have joined the mission to survey the damage. It's the north east of Japan which has been worst hit by the massive tsunami caused by the biggest in nearly a century and a half. At the centre the city of Sendai, where the worst is feared for hundreds perhaps thousands of people. The official figure of dead is currently 95 and rising. And thr threat from the monster waves goes all around the Pacific basin with strong aftershocks still being felt. Alerts have been put in place as far away as California all the way to Alaska.

A US-operated Antarctic cruise ship with 160 people aboard has lost an engine in high seas, but is limping safely to its scheduled port. The Argentine Navy said the Clelia II declared an emergency on Tuesday, reporting it had lost an engine amid heavy seas and 55 miles per hour (90 km per hour) winds. ANCHOR: The ship wrecking trade is big in Bangladesh, but the workers who turn sea vessels into mountains of scrap metal, are very likely to be ship wrecked themselves. Here is a look at their dangerous livelihood. STORY: These ships, on their final journey to the breakers' yard in Bangladesh, bring with them a deadly cargo. The workers who reduce the huge vessels to piles of scrap metal and recyclable parts face the very real prospect of injury, disease and death. At least 10 people have been killed in the past year. Some of the country's ship breaking workforce of around 30000 in more than 20 yards are now getting safety equipment and training - but it's not universal. [Nader Ali, Ship Yard Labourer]: "I have learned how to cut ships. Now I'm doing the job wearing boots on my feet, gloves on my hands, a helmet on my head and dark glasses over my eyes. It's still a risky job but we do it carefully." In the early days the casualties were mostly from explosions aboard scrapped oil tankers. More recent deaths have been the result of falling steel or falling workers. Health experts say carcinogenic chemicals and acetylene cutting equipment add to the risks of illness. [Akhtar Hossain Chowdhury, Dermatologist]: "These health hazards are mainly physical, mechanical, biological and psychological effects. These effects are mainly dermatitis, burn, and ulcer." It was caused by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck 130 kilometres off the eastern coast - sending a 4-metre wall of water inland, causing widespread devastation. So far, 23 people are confirmed dead - but that number's expected to rise. The first wave has also reached Russia's Kuril islands to the north, reportedly around a metre high. In Japan, 200 people have reportedly been washed away, with several others missing on Japan's Sendai island. Tokyo's been all-but shut down - with fires and injuries widely reported there. Millions are without electricity. Norita International Airport has been shut down. Hawaii is now bracing for a destructive wave to reach its shores within the next few hours.
