Located in Dartmouth among the lakes, Shubie Park has various walking trails. It is one of many dog-friendly parks in the Halifax Regional Municipality. The park is also an area that had been part of the Shubenacadie Canal system. Begun around 1826, the Shubenacadie Canal Company had employed mostly Irish immigrants to help in the construction of a canal that stretched from Dartmouth Cove to Maitland at the Bay of Fundy. In the park, there are remnants of workcamps inhabited by the Irish stonemasons. Plus, there are restored canal locks throughout the park site. The story of the Shubenacadie Canal is available at the Fairbanks Interpretation Centre. The Shubenacadie Canal Commission has its headquarters at the interpretation centre. It is responsible for the restoration and maintenance of the canal system.

A quick editing hack of some video clips I made while enjoying a walk in Shubie Park, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Enjoyed scoring it too! :-)

A few days of paddling the shubie combied into a single video. Starting in Maitland it's a few km run past the bridge to Green Creek. Lots of fun, and lots of waves. Paddlers Pictured: Clif, Greg, Karl, Erin, Dave Filmed by: Clif & Karl Location: en.wikipedia.org

For high definition video add: "&fmt=22" (without the quote marks) to the web address. Yesterday (March 7, 2009) it was 10 C (50F), but it takes time for all the snow and ice to melt, so the trails in Shubie Park (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) were slippery in spots. This section of the park was shaded, and was pure ice, with a little bit of water on the surface. Since there is a guard-rail I figured I could navigate the hill safely, but it was a lot harder than I expected. Near the spot where the guard rail is bent, the trail slopes to the steep bank above the river and the lower rail isn't very sturdy (not enough to lean on anyway). I made my way through this section by crossing the trail to higher section where the snow/ice was crustier--there was a chance to travel it without sliding down to the river. Since it took me awhile to get off this hill of ice, I turned to take a photo of it from a safer section of trail, and was surprised to see ducks (from the river) at the slippery part that I had troubles with. It's a good thing that ducks have wings! This was shot as a free-view parallel 3d movie, using a Loreo Lens in a Cap--there is no sound because my previous video recording settings had the sound off, and I was trying to catch the ducks before they went away, rather than mess with menu settings--though I have another duck film with sound. If you can view stereoscopic images, the added depth really adds a lot. Tip: pre-load the film in high-def, put your mouse over the ...
