You've seen pictures of charming Victorian ladies and gentlemen both amused and repulsed by 19th century carnival freaks, right? Well, where better place to hide a bunch of Horzine experiments? Naturally such fresh carnival carnage deserves a New Map packed with frolicsome freaks baying for blood: Welcome to the Abusement Park! Think of our freaks as early models, perhaps created by Kevin Clamely's great-grandpa, Errol Clamely, an insane genius let loose in a world unprepared for his vision; or maybe these creatures are young Kevin's twisted dreams, spawned from the carnival trips his mom forced him to take as a child, long before he founded Horzine and went completely big-top loony. The kindly, amusing and murderous Ringmaster presiding over this 3-ring nut-house is The Patriarch, aided by his Lovely Assistant, the Stalker, sporting a fetching new outfit and the amiable Pukey the Clown. Jean Claude Ades' idea to remake the classic "Vallée De Larmes" from René & Gaston (Fresh Fruit, 1993) eventually made his track a definite biggie for the summer incl. fantastic remixes from argentinian wonderboy Loko and the big no. 1 beatport force Pleasurekraft. It's a position in which she seems perfectly comfortable, walking the wire she's stretched between jazz influences and an eccentrically dark take on pop song-writing. "If you like Nina Simone, Florence & The Machine, and/or Bjork, then we think you will enjoy Kimbra — her music reminds us of all those fierce ladies!" wrote Perez Hilton after seeing the video for her single "Settle Down". Stripped of the pop production so heavy in her released tracks, we were excited to hear Kimbra exposed only to the acoustic echoes of the lane we'd chosen. With dueling vocalist and keys player Sam Lawrence in tow, we met up with stylishly attired Kimbra in an alley behind the Workers Club in Fitzroy. The lovely folks at the Workers opened up their laneway entrance to supply power to Sam's keyboard. Posed between the pub and the parked cars, the two delighted us with possibly one of our favourite sessions to date, a fortunate combination of an elegantly executed song with environmental blessings such as perfectly timed gusts of wind. We were even lucky to have a coy father-of-the-crew who unwittingly arranged himself centre shot, supplying a new meaning to the song's recurring line, "am I caught in the background or part of the scene?" Departing from our usual coverage of the live music scene we captured this sexy new piece from young Melbourne-based choreographer Alice Topp. Breathing life and energy into the simple flesh-coloured garments, Vivenne Wong and Calvin Hannaford performed "Trace" within the narrow space of Guildford Lane, accompanied by the beautiful warm tones of classical guitarist Tiago Brissos. Highlighted by Utopian Slumps against the backdrop of the Guildford Lane Gallery, and looked over by curious passersby, this latest episode eloquently highlights the fusion between cinema and performing art that is our goal. They are proud to have since released their glorious debut full length, The Big Black and The Blue. ABOUT THE EPISODE First Aid Kit have some wonderful live performances out there on the internet. So we were very excited to see what they'd do for us. Their simple guitar sound and stunning harmonies would bounce off those cobblestones like nothing else. As we were preparing for the shoot, hoping the rain wouldn't get any heavier, we noticed a horse and cart go by. Hmmmm.... What a great way to pick up the band. Ty chased the cabby and brokered a stellar deal for the one block of transport we needed. We always travel like this of course. By the time we'd finished sound check we knew it was going to be a special episode. Those voices. Wow. And a little crowd had already gathered behind the cameras, which always adds a welcome pressure and buzz. Roll cameras. Action. Such beautiful sound and pictures. Wait. No. It's really starting to rain. Damn, that's a great idea Melany. Yeah, give her the umbrella, ask her mum if its ok. I hope this works out. It did. It really really did. ABOUT PASSENGER The brainchild of 26-year-old Brighton born singer/songwriter Mike Rosenberg, Passenger is redefining the troubadour for the 21st century. Formerly a five-piece band, Passenger has now pared back to basics, quite literally bringing music to the streets on a series of lengthy busking journeys across Australia, America and the United Kingdom. A classic journeyman musician, cut from the same mould as Van Morrison, Neil Young and John Prine, Passenger has the unique ability to move from the humorous to heartbreaking with every song. ABOUT THE EPISODE We got in touch with Mike Rosenberg - aka Passenger - after a number of people recommended we record a session. We soon discovered this UK native spends a good deal of his time here in Australia having recently collaborated with a number of our nations finest on his 2010 release "Flight Of The Crow". After meeting Mike at the nearby train station we gathered with the crew in a lovely leafy suburban Northcote laneway. Timed beautifully with the evening fading behind the weathered picket fences, the light seemed fitting to the song choice of the day. While normally accompanied by Matt Corby on the album, the backing for this performance of Golden Thread was replaced by the neighbourhood dogs and birds, such is the reliability of the wildlife we've become accustomed. ABOUT THE EPISODE Ty and Sideshow Alley's south east Asian corespondent Mat 'Dode' Dodos, saw these guys play and knew they'd be perfect for a sideshow. Manly men, deep harmonies, and the toughest instrument in the world (you'll know it when you see it). They were rehearsing for their album launch in the backwoods of brunswick. We met them after practice and headed around the corner. Our largest band to date, with the most cameras and more challengingly, the most microphones and audio recorders. You don't know what the elusive ingredient is, but you are certain that they belong set apart from amongst the crowd of musical peers in which they lay. ABOUT THE EPISODE Midlake, yes Midlake. Internationally famous folk rockers. "Umm so how about just before sound check?" "Yes" "Great, see you then." Sideshow Alley is now excited. But wait. Just before sound check, on a Monday? That's like 3pm. Gulp. Most of the sideshow crew have day jobs...... But with a few long lunches, unscheduled ahhh "meetings" we had a crew. But only four cameras. And a very minimal lens choice. At least our new audio recording setup - as road tested with the Mourning Sons - is ready to deliver amazingness. A back stage meeting, a walk through the sunshine, then a quiet gathering in a St Kilda alley. With bass and percussion working on some technical issues back at the venue, we were treated to an amazing triple guitar + flute moment. Straight outta Texas.
