Sikorsky H-19 Helicopter Flight Training - 1956 US Army instructional film

This film covers the H-19's preflight inspection, taxiing, normal takeoff, hovering, autorotations, normal and steep approach, and engine shutdown. Courtesy en.wikipedia.org The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw, (also known by its Sikorsky model number, S-55) was a multi-purpose helicopter used by the United States Army and United States Air Force. The H-19 Chickasaw holds the distinction of being the US Army's first true transport helicopter and, as such, played an important role in the initial formulation of Army doctrine regarding air mobility and the battlefield employment of troop-carrying helicopters. The H-19 underwent live service tests in the hands of the 6th Transportation Company, during the Korean War beginning in 1951 as an unarmed transport helicopter. Undergoing tests such as medical evacuation, tactical control and front-line cargo support, the helicopter succeeded admirably in surpassing the capabilities of the H-5 Dragonfly which had been used throughout the war by the Army.

Sikorsky X2 Technology helicopter achieves 250kt - Sep 2010

Sikorsky video of the Sep. 15, 2010 test flight during which its X2 Technology coaxial-rotor helicopter demonstrator achieved its 250kt speed goal. Conventional helicopters cruise at around 150kt. The X2 reached 260kt in a shallow dive as is expected to exceed 250kt in level flight once a sail fairing is fitted between the upper and lower rotors to reduce drag further. X2 uses a single T800 engine to power both the rotors and the tail-mounted variable-pitch propeller, which provides forward thrust to enable the high speed. Other technologies include fly-by-wire flight controls and active vibration control. As the video opens you see a full-scale mockup of Sikorsky's proposed X2 Light Tactical Helicopter in the hangar.

The Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche.

The Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche was an advanced five-blade armed reconnaissance and attack helicopter designed for the United States Army. The RAH-66 program was canceled in 2004, before mass production began, after nearly $7 billion was spent on the program. During the early 1980s, the US Army began formulating a requirement for a replacement of its helicopters then in service, resulting in the Light Helicopter Experimental program. In 1991, the Boeing-Sikorsky team was chosen to produce prototypes. The Comanche would incorporate stealth technologies, featuring a number of designs previously untried. It was to employ advanced sensors in its reconnaissance role, and was intended to designate targets for the AH-64 Apache. The aircraft was also armed with missiles and rockets to destroy armored vehicles. Two RAH-66 prototypes were built and conducted flight testing from 1996 to 2004; since the cancellation the prototypes have been placed on display. Aero-TV: X2 Advancement Sikorsky Prepares for Speed Benchmark

Unique Rotorcraft Development Program Seen As Sikorsky R&D Benchmark Few (if any) rotorcraft development programs have earned the intense interest and scrutiny devoted to the Sikorsky X2 Coaxial Pusher concept. About as unique as a rotorcraft gets these days, this program has set the heli world on its ear with the promise of a viable helo design that could conceivably be put into service within just a few years and readily stomp through 250 knots, in the process. Yeah, Sikorsky got the rotor community's attention... and in a very big way. Aiming to achieve the highest speed ever recorded for a helicopter, the X2 Technology demonstrator combines an integrated suite of technologies intended to advance the state-of-the-art, counter-rotating coaxial rotor helicopter. It is designed to demonstrate a helicopter can cruise comfortably at 250 knots while retaining such desirable attributes as excellent low speed handling, efficient hovering, and a seamless and simple transition to high speed. Sikorsky began to commit resources and full funding for X2 Technology program development in 2005. The Sikorsky X2 technology demonstrator aircraft incorporates several new technologies. These technologies include an integrated Fly-by-Wire system that allows the engine/rotor/propulsor system to operate efficiently, with full control of rotor rpm throughout the flight envelope, high lift-to-drag rigid blades, low drag hub fairings, and Active Vibration Control. In addition, the aircraft will ...

Sikorsky - X2 Raider™ Prototypes [720p]

20 Oct 2010 : West Palm Beach, Florida - Sikorsky Aircraft will design, build and fly two prototype light tactical helicopters as the follow-on advancement to the X2 TechnologyTM demonstrator aircraft that unofficially shattered the helicopter world speed record here in September with a flight speed of 250 knots (463 km/h). The decision to continue development of the next-generation rotary wing technology will enable Sikorsky and select suppliers to offer the high speed X2 prototype vehicles for flight test and evaluation by US armed forces. Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). "Having proved the X2 Technology design to ourselves, we have full confidence we can now mature the technology for the US Army's light armed reconnaissance helicopter size," said Sikorsky President Jeffrey Pino. "Self funding the design of a brand new light tactical helicopter -- the Sikorsky S-97 -- and manufacturing two prototypes we have designated as the Raider™ X2 helicopter will help military aviation evaluate the viability of a fast and maneuverable next generation rotorcraft for a variety of combat missions." In March 2010, Sikorsky submitted an X2 aircraft design to the Army's Armed Aerial Scout (AAS) program in response to a request for information. The AAS program is currently conducting an analysis of alternatives for the Army's next armed reconnaissance helicopter. Like the X2 Technology demonstrator that broke the helicopter speed record, the X2 ...

Sikorsky - X2 Technology™ Demonstrator Final Flight Test 23 : 253 Knots (469 Km/h) [1080p]

Award-Winning X2 Technology™ Demonstrator Takes its Final Flight - Program paved the way for upcoming S-97 Raider™ helicopter. July 14, 2011. WEST PALM BEACH, Florida - Sikorsky Aircraft Corp.'s X2 Technology™ demonstrator has flown for the last time, the company announced today. Sikorsky is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX). In an early morning demonstration flight conducted from the company's new Sikorsky Innovations Center within its Development Flight Center, the X2 Technology demonstrator gave invited guests one last look at its technology in flight before officially being retired and transitioning to its first application, the S-97 Raider™. It was the twenty-third test flight of the award-winning X2™ aircraft, which flew approximately 22 total hours and achieved a maximum cruise speed of 253 knots (469 km/h) in level flight at its peak point in the program. That milestone, an unofficial speed record for a conventional helicopter, was achieved on Sept. 15, 2010. "This flight is the culmination of a five-year, internally funded program to expand the operational envelope of helicopters," said Sikorsky President Jeffrey Pino. "The results of this program speak to the success of a rapid prototyping environment, where a small empowered team was able to meet a specific number of very challenging goals. We met these within a small budget and a compressed schedule. "The X2 program also has helped to develop the next generation of Sikorsky engineers ...
