Silly Wizard Live - Donald McGillavry

Lyrics * as sung here* are at the end of this description. This was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia on April 1, 1988. Donald McGillavry was a fictional character created by James Hogg. In a footnote to The London Literary Gazette's review dated November 11, 1820 of "The Jacobite Relics of Scotland" by James Hogg, where the song was first published, the Gazette stated: "Donald Macgillavry is here put for the Highland Clans generally." Gareth Davis wrote a comprehensive history of this song for Radio De Danann which can be found here: radiodedanann.blogspot.com Silly Wizard members in this clip: Andy M. Silly Wizard Live - Land O' The Leal

Song lyrics are included at the end of this description. This song was written by Lady Carolina Nairne of Perthshire, Scotland (1766-1845.) The video was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia on April 1, 1988. This song has always been one of my favorites, but this performance is even more touching to me now that Johnny has passed away. I hope that he has found his own land o' the leal. This song can also be found on Andy M. Stewart's CD "Man in the Moon." Silly Wizard members in this clip: Andy M. Silly Wizard- If I Were a Blackbird (A Scottish Ballad)

I am a young sailor, my story is sad, Though once I was carefree and a brave sailor lad, I courted a lassie by night and by day, Oh but now she has left me, And sailed far away. Oh, if I was a blackbird could whistle and sing, I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in, And in the top riggin' I would there build my next, And I'd flutter my wings o'er her lilly white breast. Or if I was a scholar and could handle the pen Once secret love letter to my true love I'd send And tell of my sorrow, my grief and my pain Since she's gone and left me In yon flowery glen. I sailed o'er the ocean, my fortune to seek Though I missed her caress and her kiss on my cheek I returned and I told her my love was still warm but she turned away lightly And great was her scorn. I offered to take her to Donnybrook Fair And to buy her fine ribbons to tie up her hair I offered to marry and to stay by her side But she says in the morning She sails with the tide. My parents, they chide me, oh they will not agree Saying that me and my false love, married should never be Oh let them deprive me, or let them do what they will While there's breath in my body She's the one I love still
Silly Wizard Live - Willie Archer and The Banks of the Bann

This was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia on April 1, 1988. I included the banter because it is one of the things that makes this concert so special and so fun to watch. The instrumental following the song is called "Donna's Waltz" and is on Phil Cunningham's CD "The Palomino Waltz." Silly Wizard members in this clip: Andy M. Silly Wizard: Bridget O'Malley

Bridget O'Malley from the album "So Many Partings" by Silly Wizard. Lyrics: Oh Bridgit O'Malley, you left my heart shaken With a hopeless desolation, I'd have you to know It's the wonders of admiration your quiet face has taken And your beauty will haunt me wherever I go. The white moon above the pale sands, the pale stars above the thorn tree Are cold beside my darling, but no purer than she I gaze upon the cold moon till the stars drown in the warm sea And the bright eyes of my darling are never on me. My Sunday it is weary, my Sunday it is grey now My heart is a cold thing, my heart is a stone All joy is dead within me, my life has gone away now For another has taken my love for his own. The day it is approaching when we were to be married And it's rather I would die than live only to grieve Oh meet me, my Darling, e'er the sun sets o'er the barley And I'll meet you there on the road to Drumslieve. Oh Bridgit O'Malley, you've left my heart shaken With a hopeless desolation, I'd have you to know It's the wonders of admiration your quiet face has taken And your beauty will haunt me wherever I go.

My favorit song from the album "wild and beautiful" by Silly Wizard comes along with some gothic pictures. Enjoy! Silly Wizard: The Valley of Strathmore

The Valley of Strathmore from the album "So Many Partings" by Silly Wizard Lyrics: By the clear and the winding stream In the valley of Strathmore Where my love and I have been Where we'll wander never more But if time was a thing man could buy All the money that I have in store I would give for one day by her side In the valley of Strathmore From the glen of the golden and the green I left for a land far away Where sadness has never been seen And joy only costs a day's pay But if time was a thing man could buy All the money that I have in store I would give for one day by her side In the valley of Strathmore But if time was a thing man could buy All the money that I have in store I would give for one day by her side In the valley of Strathmore In Strathmore there's a long working day For a man with his hands on the plow But it's work I'd be happy to do If at night I were lying with you But if time was a thing man could buy All the money that I have in store I would give for one day by her side In the valley of Strathmore As I take a long draught from my glass Oh, I'm drinking alone here again And I try not to think of my lass For the old days will ne'er come again But if time was a thing man could buy All the money that I have in store I would give for one day by her side In the valley of Strathmore But if time was a thing man could buy All the money that I have in store I would give for one day by her side In the valley of Strathmore

Silly Wizard- Golden Golden

Silly Wizard was a Scottish folk band that began forming in Edinburgh in 1970. The founder members were two like-minded university students—Gordon Jones (guitar, bodhran, vocals, bouzouki, mandola) and Bob Thomas (guitar, mandolin, mandola, banjo, concertina). The as-yet-unnamed band was sometimes joined by thirteen-year-old schoolboy Johnny Cunningham (fiddle, viola, mandola, vocals), who began more extensive touring with the band in 1972. Thomas credited the name of the band to a flatmate who was writing a book of children's stories, and the group first performed as "Silly Wizard" in summer 1972. Chris Pritchard (vocals) replaced Bill Watkins (vocals, guitar) in 1972. From September 1972 until March 1974, the band organized the Saturday night bookings, and regularly performed at, the Triangle Folk Club in Edinburgh. In February 1973, vocalist Chris Pritchard left the band and was replaced by Madelaine Taylor (guitar, bodhran, vocals). In October 1973, the band was signed to Transatlantic Records XTRA label. An album was recorded but before it could be released, Madelaine Taylor left the band in December 1973. The master tapes were subsequently lost and the album has never been released. Bob, Gordon and Johnny began touring as a trio in January 1974, and went on the first of many French tours in April 1974. The band added Neil Adam (bass, harmonium) in September 1974 and Andy M. Stewart (vocals, tin whistle, tenor banjo) in December 1974. In March 1975, Silly Wizard ...

Silly Wizard: The Fisherman's Song-Lament for the Fisherman's Wife

The Fisherman's Song-Lament for the Fisherman's Wife, "Wild and Beautiful" by Silly Wizard. Lyrics: By the storm-torn shoreline a woman is standing The spray strung like jewels in her hair And the sea tore the rocks near the desolate landing as though it had known she stood there. Chorus: But she has come down to condemn that wild ocean For the murderous loss of her man. His boat sailed out on Wednesday morning, And it's feared she's gone down with all hands. Oh and white were the wave-caps And wild was their parting So fierce is the warring of love, But she prayed to the gods Both of men and of sailors Not to cast their cruel nets o'er her love. There's a school on the hill Where the songs of dead fathers Are led toward tempests and gales, Where their God-given wings Are clipped close to their bodies, And their eyes are bound-'round with ships' sails. What force leads a man To a life filled with danger High on seas or a mile underground? It's when need is his master And poverty's no stranger, And there's no other work to be found.

Silly Wizard: Wi' My Dog and Gun

Wi' My Dog and Gun from the album "So Many Partings" by Silly Wizard Lyrics: Wi' my dog and gun, through the bloomin' heather, For game and pleasure I took my way. I met a maid, she was tall and slender, Her eyes enticed me some time to stay. I said "Fair maid, do you know I love you? Tell me your name and your dwelling, oh so?" "Oh, excuse my name, but you'll find my dwelling By the mountain streams where the moorcocks crow." I said "Fair maid, if you wed a farmer, You'll be tied for life tae one plot of land. I'm a rovin' Johnny, if you gone wi' me, You will have no ties, so gi' me your hand." "Ah, but if my parents knew I loved a rover, It is that I'm sure would be my overthrow, So I'll stay at home for another season By the mountain streams where the moorcocks crow." "So it's fare thee well, love, another season, We will meet again in yon woodland vale, And I'll set you down all upon my knee, love, And I'll listen to your lovesick tale. "And it's arm in arm we will go together Through the lofty trees, in the valley below, Where the lenties sing their song so sweetly By the mountain streams where the moorcocks crow." Wi' my dog and gun, through the bloomin' heather, For game and pleasure I took my way. I met a maid, she was tall and slender, Her eyes enticed me some time to stay. I said "Fair maid, do you know I love you? Tell me your name and your dwelling, oh so?" "Oh, excuse my name, but you'll find my dwelling By the mountain streams where the moorcocks crow."

Daggerfall - Silly wizards and their madness

Finally did a quick recording of Daggerfall. At least one that has more meat than just someone screaming vengeance. Now it's an actual mission. I picked up my argonian and took a random Mage guilds quest which happened to eleminate some random wizard that went mad and that a local baroness wanted dead. Nothing complex except I'm rather clumsy during dungeon crawling. This is one of the few, rare times I happen to do not so bad during the mission. The reason there is no sound is mostly because I recorded via the mic's drive instead of the stereo mix. The result? The sounds were just Daggerfall's sound via my mic and me mumbling at times. So you get some hopefully fitting music as a replacement. Might record myself playing someday, since I'm easily scared and jumpy. Daggerfall has a creepy ambiance in dungeons, creepy noises and is good at making monster pop up in your face randomly at time...

Silly Wizard - Kiss the Tears away - 09 The Loch Tay Boat Song Lyrics: When I've done the work o day, And I row my boat away, Down the waters o Loch Tay, When the evening light is fallin', And I look towards Ben lawyers, Where the after glory glow, And I dream on two Bright eyes, With a merry mouth below, Shes my beauteous nigh-ean ruadh, Shes my joy and sorrow too, And although she is untrue, Well I cannot live without her, For my hearts a boat in tow, And Id give the world to know, If she means to let me go, As I sing hee-re, ho-ro Nighean ruadh your lovely hair, Has more beauty I declare, Than all the trasses fair, From Killin and Aberfeldy, Be they lint white, Brown or gold, Be they blacker than the sloe, They mean not as much to me, Than the melting flake of snow, Her dance is like the gleam, O the sunlight on the stream, And the song the wee folks sing, Oh, they're the songs she sings at milking, But my heart is full of woe, For last night she bade me go, And the tears begin to flow, As I sing Hee-ree,Ho-ro

Silly Wizard - The Banks of the Lee - Kiss the Tears away Lyrics: Where true lovers meet beneath the green bower Where true lovers meet out beneath the green tree And Mary, fond Mary, she says unto her true love, "You have stolen my young heart on the Banks of the Lee" Chorus: I loved her very dearly, most truely and sincerely There is no one in this wide world I love more than she Every bush and every bower, every wild Irish flower Reminds me on my Mary, on the banks of the Lee. "Don't stay out too late, love, on the moorlands, my Mary Don't stay out too late, love, on the moorlands for me" But it's little was my notion, when we parted by the ocean That we were forever parten by the Banks of the Lee Chorus I will pull my love some roses, some wild Irish roses I will pull my love some roses, the fairest I see And I'll lay them on the graveside of my own dear darlin' Mary On that cold and silent grave where she sleeps 'neath the dew Chorus
