#41 of The Flying Lap: Sir Jackie Stewart

iTunes: audio bit.ly video bit.ly More episodes at theflyinglap.com 'The Flying Lap with Peter Windsor', Wednesdays at 1900 UK, 11AM Pacific. In this special episode we talk to Sir Jackie Stewart, three-times World Champion and the winner of 27 Grands Prix for BRM and Tyrrell. A tireless campaigner for safety and charitable causes throughout his racing career, and in the years that followed his retirement in 1973, Sir Jackie is today acclaimed globally as one of the most significant figures in the history of our sport. In the aftermath of the shocking accident in Las Vegas that cost the life of Dan Wheldon, he talks about lessons that can be learned in all disciplines of the sport - and about the F1 politics over the years that, astonishingly, have led to Sir Jackie never being asked to take a formal role (in the area of safety) within the sport. Despite that omission, there is no doubt that no single individual has done more for the safety of drivers, pit crew and spectators. We talk about his favourite cars, his most "harmonious" races, his own mental approach to racing, about the current F1 stars, about Red Bull Racing - a team he originated in Milton Keynes - and about the searching question he asked of Ayrton Senna early in 1990, now made famous by the "Senna" movie . Candid and open, Sir Jackie also talks about his battle with dyslexia and his spiritual beliefs.

Sir Jackie Stewart OBE on Tales from the Toolbox book at Goodwood Revival 2010

Tales from the Toolbox - A collection of behind-the-scenes tales from Grand Prix mechanics. By Michael Oliver. Foreword by Sir Jackie Stewart OBE. First published in 2009 by Veloce. www.veloce.co.uk 40% of all royalties to the Grand Prix Mechanics Charitable Trust. A unique collection of behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes as told, in their own words, by former Grand Prix mechanics who have worked at the top level of the sport during the past 50 years. On the front line of the sport, mixing with drivers and team bosses, the mechanics saw a side of it that nobody else got to see and rarely gets to hear about -- and this book tells their story. Chapters are themed around a particular aspect of a mechanic's life, ranging from what they consider the highs and lows of their career, to their opinions of drivers and team bosses, the all-nighters, letting off steam, the 'Mechanic's Gallon,' nightmare journeys and customs capers. It also reveals a tale of camaraderie between teams and individual mechanics which is hard to imagine in today's highly competitive Formula One environment. The stories are supplemented by photographs from the archives and photo albums of the mechanics themselves, many of which are previously unseen. Independent Reviews "Chapter themes in this enjoyable paperback range from travel to job risks, mith memories of key spanner-men.
