The Moment Before the Crash - Hammond Meets Moss - BBC Four

www.bbc.co.uk More on this programme: www.bbc.co.uk Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond and motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss share the same life-altering experience - they had their lives changed forever by terrible car accidents. The pair recovered quickly from their respective physical injuries, but the acquired brain injuries of those major impacts meant their minds took much longer to heal. But why should brain tissue take so much longer to repair itself than skin and bone and what kind of trauma does the organ go through when trying to 're-boot' itself? In an engaging and intimate conversation punctuated by some extraordinary medical insights and archive footage of both of their accidents, the two men exchange their experiences.

Aintree Circuit Club - Vanwall VW9 on original Grand Prix Circuit

This Vanwall VW9, with a special lightweight chassis originally, was built in 1957 but was not completed until 1958. This car was never subsequently raced, but was retained as a show car by Vandervell Products who owned and manufactured the cars. Driven today by Rick Hall (c/o Kevin Wheatcroft / Donington Grand Prix Collection) on the start/finish straight of the original Grand Prix circuit. The original VW4 that won at Aintree, was driven by Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks. This was the first occasion that a British-built car won a World Championship race, a feat achieved with two British drivers at their home Grand Prix. It was eventually destroyed (by owners Vandervell) when it crashed and caught fire in the Moroccan Grand Prix at Casablanca in 1958, with the driver, Stuart Lewis-Evans, later dying as a result of severe burns.

Harnessing Horsepower - The Pat Moss Carlsson story (Veloce). Stuart Turner & Sir Stirling Moss OBE

Interview with Sir Stirling Moss OBE at Goodwood Revival 2010 & Stuart Turner at Veloce House 2010. The book covers the life of one of the greatest women rally drivers of all time: Pat Moss Carlsson. Pat had a highly successful show-jumping career before moving into motorsport, going on to become European Ladies Rally Champion no fewer than five times. In 1960, with her co-driver Ann Wisdom, she won the Liège, the toughest rally of all, a win as iconic in motorsport terms as her brother Stirling's famous one on the Mille Miglia. Stuart Turner is uniquely qualified to write about Pat because he not only navigated for her on British rallies -- they took the first win by a Mini together -- but was then her team manager at BMC. Pat later moved from BMC to Ford before having a successful rally programme with Saab, competing in the same team as her husband, Erik Carlsson. She also drove Renault Alpine, Lancia and Toyota rally cars before retiring in 1974, going on to help her daughter Suzy with her show-jumping career. Pat never lost her zest for life, and was once even stopped for speeding ... while towing a horse box. Featuring 150 evocative pictures, this is an intimate and unique account of one of motorsport's most formidable women. Stuart Turner has enjoyed a lifelong involvement in motorsport, both as competitor and team manager. After becoming British Champion navigator, he went on to manage the BMC Competitions Department when Mini Coopers were winning Monte Carlo ...

Silverstone Classic 2010 - Sir Stirling Moss - Making comeback after his fall.

British motor racing legend Stirling Moss prepares for his return to the track with a quick sit in the car an hour or so ahead of the race which so nearly ended with a victory at the Silverstone Classic, until his car became stuck in gear. At the wheel of his 1956 1.5-litre OSCA, Sir Stirling OBE was leading his class in the two-driver RAC Woodcote Trophy sportscar race ahead of musician Chris Rea. But with just ten minutes of the one-hour race to run, 80-year-old Moss was forced to pull up in the pit lane. At the time he was lying in 19th position overall after taking over from driving partner Ian Nuthall - they had started 33rd on the 48-car grid. Moss said of his retirement: "She was stuck in fourth gear and I couldn't get it to come out. That's a bit too high a gear to become jammed in. Third I could have coped with. But we were flying and I've really enjoyed it." The race marked Moss's first since he broke both his ankles in an accident at his home in London in March. His retirement from the race meant Rea and co-driver Richard Hodson were able to speed by and take the class win instead.

Sir Stirling Moss - last pit stop in his career

What a historic moment! I had lunch with Sir Stirling Moss and his lovely wife Susie that day, Thursday June 9th, along with his co driver Ian Nuthall, his service team around Andy Prill and some others. How did I get here? Well, my cousin drives the other Porsche (RS60) and he shares the service team with Stirling Moss and I just came along. Then, from the other side of the pit lane I shot this historic bit of film with my iPhone: Sir Stirling Moss's last time of getting into a car (his own Porsche 718 RS61) at an official FIA race. After his one round (actually it wasn't even a full round because he drove out of the pit and back in without completing it), he decided to end his career. I talked to him after the race was over, and he said he'd never been so scared shitless in his entire career, and therefore it was time to end it. he said there is no point to participating in a race if you can no longer drive the way you want to and if you have no chance of winning. He said "I'm not a driver, I am a racer!" Stirling, I wish you all the best, you are truly a legend. Thank you for sharing these moments with me! Anyone interested in the footage: Please ask first!!!
