Hope of Profit, Social Change Meet in New College Programs

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report from voaspecialenglish.com | http Small business entrepreneurs play an important part in American job growth. Small businesses have created almost two-thirds of new jobs in the last fifteen years. The economy has traditionally been divided into three sectors. One is the private sector, meaning businesses. The second is the public sector, or government. And the third is the nonprofit sector. But now some people talk about a fourth sector. It represents nonprofit and for-profit organizations working toward goals of social change and environmental activism. Universities are starting to offer training and degree programs to prepare students to work in this area. One of these schools is Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. It now offers a degree in social entrepreneurship. Bernard Turner is director of the Center for Social Entrepreneurship at the university. He says student interest is driving many of these new programs. "Students are saying 'Now I want to be an entrepreneur, but I want to do something that deals with a social problem or a social issue that's dear to me." William Paddock is founder and director of a business consulting company in Tennessee called WAP Sustainability. He has a business degree and training in the area of environmental sustainability. Recently, the Custom Packaging company of Lebanon, Tennessee, hired him to help make its business more environmentally friendly. The company makes cardboard ...

TEDxChCh - Linh Do - Defying Social Norms for Social Change

In this talk, Linh Do asks some important questions: What is normal? And how abnormal do we have to be to effect social change? 19-year-old Linh Do is the founder of Change and Switch in Australia. Four years ago, Linh initiated the Change a Million Light Bulbs project in Melbourne to get people to switch from incandescent to LED or compact fluorescent light bulbs. The project later went Australia-wide under the name Change and Switch and, as of November 2009, incandescent light bulbs are no longer for sale in Australia. Just three years ago, Linh was trained by Al Gore to be a Climate Project presenter and deliver the slideshow behind An Inconvenient Truth, and earlier this year, Linh was one of 250 international passengers to spend two months on the Ship of World Youth, an initiative by the Government of Japan to facilitate intercultural exchange. Linh is currently studying for her Bachelor of Arts in International Politics and Environmental Studies, as well as the University of Melbourne's Universitas 21 Diploma in Global Issues. Slavoj Zizek: The Delusion of Green Capitalism

Complete video at: fora.tv Philosopher Slavoj Zizek argues environmentally conscious consumers are desperate for simple tasks they can perform to alleviate their guilt, so they do things like purchase overpriced organic produce. Zizek also highlights Starbucks, which he suggests attracts customers by appealing to their sense of altruism. ----- The Committee on Globalization and Social Change will launch with a special lecture by philosopher and critic Slavoj Zizek who will speak on "The Situation Is Catastrophic, but Not Serious." This alleged message of the Austrian military headquarters during WWI renders perfectly our attitude towards the ongoing crisis: we are aware of the looming (ecological, social) catastrophes, but we somehow don't take them seriously. What ideology sustains such an attitude? The Committee on Globalization and Social Change (CGSC) is an interdisciplinary working group composed of a core group of CUNY faculty interested in reflecting on globalization as an analytic category for understanding social change. Slavoj Zizek, born 1949 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Senior Researcher at Birkbeck College, University of London, is a Hegelian Philosopher, Lacanian psychoanalyst, Christian atheist, Communist political activist, and he thinks these four features are four aspects of one and the same Cause. His latest publications are: in philosophy The Parallax View, in psychoanalysis How to Read Lacan, in theology The Monstrosity of Christ, and in politics Living at ...

Ivan Sigal, Solana Larsen: Joining Forces

Is online citizen media becoming a global movement? In the past years we have seen a rise in citizen and social media for free speech and political change that is characterized by the will of individuals to act. We've watched how small numbers of bloggers on all continents have mobilized large movements and new political behavior over time. What is the driving force behind this activity? And can these individual acts of online activism in countries that are far from each other together be considered a "global movement"? Ivan Sigal and Solana Larsen help lead the online community Global Voices, which reports, translates and gives voice to online citizen media all around the world. Over the past six years, Global Voices has charted the global growth of blogging and social media activism, as it has blossomed into a significant force in narrating local events for global audiences, and directly influencing political and social change.
