Since 2009, Somerville residents and City planning staff have been engaged in a lively community planning process with the goal of creating "Somervision: Somerville's Comprehensive Plan 2010-2030." After more than fifty meetings, visioning sessions and public workshops, a draft of the SomerVision plan and its accompanying video can be found here. SomerVision is aimed at long-range, aspirational planning based on community-generated values and vision. Somerville is always changing and the SomerVision plan helps ensure that our city continues to be an exceptional place to live, work, play and raise a family. The full SomerVision plan, including the five appendices generated by the steering committee, will be released on February 24th, 2012.

Texas Drought: Lake Somerville the low down
2011 Texas drought taking it's toll on the water supply and everything that depends on it. Wednesday September 7, 2011 I tagged along with TPWD fisheries technicians Bill Johnson and Mike Gore as they surveyed Lake Somerville looking for non-native vegetation like that which have plagued many East Texas lakes and waterways. My purpose for the day was to document the effects the drought is having on the lake, wildlife and landscape around the area. Its a good thing we had the air-boat because most of the shoreline is too shallow for a regular prop motor boat. With predictions suggesting the drought will most likely continue, poor little old Lake Somerville is gonna disappear. The next two foot drop will probably double the exposed shoreline, put most of Overlook marina on dry ground and prompt the closing of the remaining boat ramps making access very difficult. Those of us who don't mind dragging a canoe or kayak down the shore will have the lake to ourselves if this drought continues much longer. One good thing about this drought affecting the lake is it provides opportunity for repairs to the boat ramps and shoreline erosion control projects. Along those same lines you might have noticed many ranchers and farmers bulldozing out their stock tanks, lakes and ponds making use of the dry conditions while praying for rain all the while. In 1985, the trio joined up with Marc Almond to record a version of the Donna Summer classic "I Feel Love". The full version was actually a medley, also incorporating snippets of Summer's "Love to Love You Baby" and John Leyton's "Johnny Remember Me". It was a huge success, reaching #3 in the UK, equalling the chart achievement of "Smalltown Boy". Although the original had been one of Marc Almond's all-time favourite songs, he had never read the lyrics and thus incorrectly sang "What'll it be, what'll it be, you and me" instead of "Falling free, falling free, falling free". No copyright infringement intended.

Lake Somerville - North Shore 2011 drought
This drought is kind of like a train wreck in slow motion where the end of the train is nowhere in sight and it just keeps on coming. I'm trying to make the best of this sad situation as it does afford a look at the lakes like never before. I've made three trips to Lake Somerville recently to hike around the shoreline and document this event as best I can for future reference. It was 108 degrees on Saturday when we hit the shore of Birch Creek Park and spent about an hour looking around the vast new beaches. The lake around Birch Creek park is shallow so every foot of drop exposes hundreds of feet of new shore line. I'll bet you can walk nearly straight across the lake from Birch Creek to Nails Creek park on the upper end. That trip just might be the next video. Stay tuned sports fans this might get interesting.
