Space Chair Project Problem In a market where innovation matters, Toshiba is more famous for what they have done in the past than for what they do now. Insight Like the old adage about humour, innovation is something you just are, not something you claim to be. Solution Demonstrate (not claim) Toshiba's innovation in an emotionally inspiring way. Send a chair into space using a single helium balloon, attach four Toshiba cameras, and film a record-breaking advert with images never seen before in HD quality. A 360 campaign was launched involving an interactive pre-launch website (www.wherewillitland.com), TV, outdoor, social media seeding, an online viral film and the post-launch website (www.leading-innovation.com). Results Toshiba hit an all time sales record during that quarter across PC's, Laptops and DVD's. Within one week of launch, the film had received over half a million hits on YouTube and was the most viewed science and technology clip in the world during launch week. To date there have been over 2.4 million hits.

Escape Vehicle no.6 presents the journey of a domestic chair from the earth to the edge of space. The film started as a live event in a disused aircraft testing site. The balloon and payload went to an altitude between 80000 ft and 100000 ft. The camera is attached to the payload of a research weather balloon. The balloon was launched from the lawn of the University of Houston and traveled approximately 20 miles East to Baytown TX before the balloon burst and the payload fell to Earth by parachute. The VadoHD survived ambient air pressures as low as 1/100th of an atmosphere, temperatures as low as -60C, and even survived being run over by an industrial lawn mower 1 week after falling to Earth. Incidentally we never would have found the payload if it hadn't been run over by this lawn mower. All of the data was intact on the camera and though a lawn mower blade destroyed the LCD screen, the VadoHD still takes great video! Here are some basic skills that an assistance dog needs when the handler uses a wheelchair;front position,swinging to right and left, around,following in aisles and through doorways, backing up, loose leash walking, tight spaces. Note that adding training with the chair added a whole new dimension to the training and took awhile to get used to for both dog and handler. Start with stationary skills & tasks, then as your dog becomes more comfortable with the chair, start with the skills and task that require movement. Training began in a familiar environment, then as dog was successful, taken to other less familiar locations, then with increasing distractions. The addition of the leash when working in public places took some time to learn how to coordinate it, the chair, the treats and clicker. An 8 foot leash that can be easily shortened may be need for going through some heavy doors. If the person with the disability is unable to train the basic skills (due to physical disability), an assistant can train the dog first to verbal cue (or eye cue) before transitioning the dog to the handler. On the occasion of the Vienna Design Week 2011 the Neue Wiener Werkstätte will be showing an installation featuring the M3 Chair developed specifically for this exhibition by Austrian designer Thomas Feichtner. This unique object will be juxtaposed with the mass-produced FX10 Lounge Chair, an earlier work by Feichtner which has since become a classic of Austrian design. While the two pieces of furniture share a basic structure that is geometric in character, the M3 chair differs from the closed-body lounge chair by virtue of its open wooden cantilever construction. Liberated from the demands placed on a mass-produced product, this design experiments not only with structural engineering and function but also harkens back to the handcrafting tradition of the longstanding family business KAPO / Neue Wiener Werkstätte. The dimensions of the M3 precisely define one cubic meter. From "m3" thus arose the name M3 Chair, to stand for conscious way of appropriating one's own space.
