Space Chair

Toshiba needed a chair flown to the edge of space and photographed in high definition, for a TV ad campaign promoting their new flat screen televisions. "Armchair viewing, redefined." But who could fly such a mission and recover the cameras where ever they landed back on earth? The electronics giant turned to small volunteer aerospace company near Sacramento, California. JP Aerospace.

Escape Vehicle No 6, Simon Faithfull, 2004 (The Arts Catalyst)

Simon Faithfulls Escape Vehicle no.6 started as a live event commissioned by The Arts Catalyst for its 2004 Artists Airshow. The live audience witnessed the launching of a weather balloon with a domestic chair dangling in space beneath it. Once the apparatus had disappeared into the sky, they then watched a live video relay from the weather balloon on a giant screen as it journeyed from the ground to the edge of space (30km up). Now presented as a non-live video work, the footage shows the chair first rush away from the fields and roads, ascend through clouds and finally (against the curvature of the earth and the blackness of space) begin to disintegrate. The chilling nature of the film is that the empty chair invites the audience to imagine taking a journey to an uninhabitable realm where it is impossible to breath, the temperature is minus 60 below and the sky now resembles the blackness of space.

Escape Vehicle no.6 (chair in space), Simon Faithfull, 2004, [4 min extract]

Escape Vehicle no.6 presents the journey of a domestic chair from the earth to the edge of space. The film started as a live event in a disused aircraft testing site. HD balloon near the edge of space, full launch to air sequence

Buy the do-it-yourself kit at: www.ProjectAether.org This video shows the full ground to air launch and altitude sequence of a research weather balloon with a VadoHD video camera attached to it. The balloon and payload went to an altitude between 80000 ft and 100000 ft. The camera is attached to the payload of a research weather balloon. The balloon was launched from the lawn of the University of Houston and traveled approximately 20 miles East to Baytown TX before the balloon burst and the payload fell to Earth by parachute. The VadoHD survived ambient air pressures as low as 1/100th of an atmosphere, temperatures as low as -60C, and even survived being run over by an industrial lawn mower 1 week after falling to Earth. Incidentally we never would have found the payload if it hadn't been run over by this lawn mower. All of the data was intact on the camera and though a lawn mower blade destroyed the LCD screen, the VadoHD still takes great video! Note: This video is not related to the "Balloon Boy" For more information on the weather research conducted with this weather balloon visit: sharp.hnet.uh.edu ---------------------------------------------------------- We are planning another HD balloon launch to the edge of space in late July / early August. OFFICIAL 1337arts.com Time Lapse Video!!! space.1337arts.com Sorry this video took so long to get out. I was having some problems with the video compression (The original video was over 7GB!!) Anyways, like I said, the video doesn't look so great, but it does show all of the views that our camera captured during its flight. If you would like to see the original pictures used to create this video, you may get them from my MIT Public Space web.mit.edu They are in the folder titled "TimeLapse3" or in the Zip File titled "TimeLapse3.zip" You have our permission to use any of these photographs (in a non-slanderous manner), provided that you credit Oliver Yeh, Justin Lee, Eric Newton, and 1337arts.com Unfortunately, the images uploaded to my public space have been compressed (the original images are too large for me to upload). If you would like a copy of any of the original images (as you can see, there are quite a lot and many others besides the one on our site that are pretty sweet... although they might take a while to find...), email info@1337arts.com with the number of image you'd like to have (eg IMG_5565) and we will send you the original, full-size copy. ps the images of the trees look squashed and there are some issues where you might see a random picture upside down in the time series b/c there were pictures that we had rotated and forgot to rotate back before making the movie. Best, -Justin, Oliver, and Eric.

p4a, Space Pasta, and Giant Squids of Anger

Shirts: dftba.com In which John and Hank Green reunite to discuss the 2010 Project for Awesome and then proceed to challenge nerdfighteria to solve a dinnertable dispute in re. the energy output needed to create moon pasta and then discuss the new t-shirts at DFTBA Records. The idea of the project for awesome is simple. You make a video in support of a charity you wish to support, and hopefully lots of people will watch and favorite and comment upon the video. P4A videos are particularly awesome and effective when they're well-edited videos that show us how the organization you support changes lives for the better. There are lots of ways to do this, but here are a few examples: Shawn's video for the uncultured project: www.youtube.com Tyler Oakley's video for the trevor project: www.youtube.com Kristina Horner's video about First Book: www.youtube.com Such videos are often useful to the charities in question, too, so don't be surprised if someone from the organization contacts you! Thanks for participating in the project for awesome, nerdfighters. We love you, particularly those of you who read this far into the video description.

We sent a weather balloon attached to a beer cooler trying to replicate the MIT launch back in september. We wanted to see if it really cost $150 which was not to be the case. We spent about $250 on this project. We launched our balloon from Xenia, Ohio and retrieved it in Crooksville, Ohio. The ascent was only 1 hr 48 minutes, and 47 minutes descent.

Near space weather balloon

Time lapse video of our engineering project at UMass Amherst. Our weather balloon, named the Shuttlecraft, reached an altitude of approximately 104000 ft. Pictures were taken every 5 seconds during the fight with a Canon a560 digital camera. The balloon traveled west as it gained altitude and then turned east where it climbed to its burst altitude. Upon reaching the maximum altitude, the balloon popped and the capsule descended back to earth. It landed off the coast of Plum Island, MA. The total trip time from launch to splashdown is 2.8 hours. Its ascent took 142 minutes and 20 seconds and it took 25 minutes and 55 seconds for it to descend back to earth. The capsule turned up four days later on the beach where it was found by a self proclaimed "Professional Beach bum" who kindly called us to arrange a pickup. After four days in the Atlantic we managed to retrieve the 8gb SDHC and get the pictures. Pictures include the Connecticut River and surrounding area, Granby MA, Holyoke MA, the former Mount Tom Ski Area, and the Atlantic Ocean. Special Thanks go to the "professional beach bum" who was kind enough to call us and meet us so we could retrieve our project. Without his help, our project would have been lost. We wish him well in his retirement. We would also like to thank Invensys for kindly sponsoring a second launch. We are currently testing the replacement parts and plan on launching it within the next 2 weeks. If you have any questions about our project, feel free ...

The Space Elevator

The Space Elevator will reduce the cost of getting from earth to space. It will also allow us to take very large payloads into space very easily, very safely. Because of that, we can build cities on the moon. We can build space stations. We can build large solar arrays in space to collect energy from the sun and beam it down to earth. How would space elevator affect the average person? Through for example much faster telecommunication rates -- you can have any kind of data rates you want, and videophones will be as common as a cell phone. And the solar power energy we'll collect can relieve our dependence on oil. That in itself will change a lot of things it will reduce pollution and it will change world politics, hopefully even stopping some of the conflicts.

First Man in Space - Skydiving From The Edge Of The World

..measuring oneself against others will lead to mediocrity, instead take a responsibility to set a standard of your own. Exhibit A: Captain Joesph Kittinger was assigned to the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratories at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. For Project Excelsior (meaning "ever upward"), a name given to the project by Col. Stapp as part of research into high altitude bailouts, he made a series of three extreme altitude parachute jumps from an open gondola carried aloft by large helium balloons. Kittinger's first high-altitude jump, from about 76400 feet (23300 m) on November 16, 1959, was a near-disaster when an equipment malfunction caused him to lose consciousness.[2] The automatic parachute opener in his equipment saved his life. He went into a flat spin at a rotational velocity of about 120 rpm. The g-forces at his extremities have been calculated to be over 22 times the force of gravity, setting another record. On December 11, 1959, he jumped again from about 74700 feet (22800 m). For that leap, Kittinger was awarded the "Leo Stevens Parachute Medal". On August 16, 1960, he made the final jump from the Excelsior III at 102800 feet (31300 m).[2] Towing a small drogue parachute for initial stabilization, he fell for four minutes and 36 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 614 miles per hour (988 km/h)[3][4] before opening his parachute at 18000 feet (5500 m). Pressurization for his right glove malfunctioned during the ascent, and his right hand swelled ...

To say ourmaninthefield has a soft spot for techno is a bit of an understatement, especially in the form Carl Cox serves it. Over the years the Warehouse project has become our homeground and one of our favourite club spots. For that reason there was a hint of sadness for us filming knowing it was the last season to be hosted at the underground car park on store street. The biggest compliment we could pay was capturing Carl Cox at his best in the arches of store street. We bid a fond farewell to a much loved venue and await with hope and anticipation the next industrial venue to host the legendary Mancunian party night Much love ourmaninthefield Visuals - Chair TV www.chairtv.com

Before This Decade is Out: The 50th Anniversary of Kennedy's Declaration

This presentation was recorded on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 in the "Moving Beyond Earth" exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy's declaration "we choose to go to the Moon" set in motion the largest mobilization of financial and human resources to achieve a single purpose in US peacetime history. Addressing a joint session of Congress, Kennedy announced his decision to send Americans to the Moon "before this decade is out." The project culminated with the Apollo 11 lunar landing in July 1969. Here Dr. Logsdon discusses the reasons behind Kennedy's decision to go to the Moon and the actions he took to turn the decision into a successful program as well as to evaluate the scientific and historical legacies of Project Apollo. Dr. John Logsdon is the former Lindbergh Chair of National Air and Space Museum's Division of Aeronautics and author of "John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon."
