Space shuttle Atlantis final launch: NASA video of last take-off

Atlantis has blasted off on NASA's last space shuttle launch. The historic liftoff occurred Friday morning, 30 years and three months after the very first shuttle flight. Four astronauts are riding Atlantis to orbit. The shuttle is bound for the International Space Station, making one final supply run. Hundreds of thousands of spectators jammed Cape Canaveral and surrounding towns for the farewell. Kennedy Space Center itself was packed with shuttle workers, astronauts and 45000 invited guests, the maximum allowed. The flight will last 12 days. Weather permitting, Atlantis will return to Kennedy, where it will end up on permanent display. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

Atlantis's Final Landing at Kennedy Space Center

After more than 30 years, the space shuttle era has come to a close. Space shuttle Atlantis and the STS-135 crew landed safely on runway 15 at 5:57 am EDT at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida, ending a 13-day journey of more than five million miles. It was the final and 133rd landing in shuttle history. The STS-135 crew consisted of Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Doug Hurley, Mission Specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim.

NASA TV: Video of space shuttle Atlantis final rollout to launch pad

NASA is finishing its 30-year space shuttle program to concentrate on missions to asteroids and Mars, destinations favoured by the White House. Private companies will take over the job of hauling cargo and crews to the International Space Station, freeing NASA up to focus on points beyond. Thunderstorms threatened to delay NASA's last space shuttle launch scheduled for Friday, with lightning striking near the pad as astronauts descended on Cape Canaveral by the dozens on Thursday, the eve of the historic final shuttle flight. Despite a 70 percent "no-go" forecast, as shuttle weather officer Kathy Winters said at the news conference on Thursday, senior managers said they would try for an on-time launch of shuttle Atlantis anyway.

Last shuttle Atlantis launch: End to NASA 'space jobs'?

NASA's final shuttle flight is expected later on Friday - with Atlantis due to lift off, although bad weather may keep it grounded a little longer. That won't deter up to a million spectators who're expected to watch the shuttle programme's last-ever launch. But as RT's Gayane Chichakyan reports, what will be an unforgettable moment for some, will be painful for others. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

STS-135: The Mission

STS-135, the final mission of the Space Shuttle Program, is detailed in this overview of Atlantis' flight to the International Space Station targeted to launch on July 8. Commander Chris Ferguson; Pilot Doug Hurley; and mission specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim Engineers want to understand why the pump failed and improve designs for future spacecraft. This is the final flight for shuttle Atlantis and the Space Shuttle Program. NASA's workhorses for the past 30 years have completed their mission to build and supply the orbiting outpost, and the agency is now looking to destinations beyond low-Earth orbit.

Teams Remove Space Shuttle Atlantis' OMS Pod For Cleaning

Technicians in Orbiter Processing Facility-2 at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida removed space shuttle Atlantis' left-hand orbital maneuvering system, or OMS, pod during three days of work, Oct. 19 - 21. The pod will be transported to Kennedy's Hypergolic Maintenance Facility for initial cleaning. Both OMS pods will be sent to White Sands, NM, where they will be prepared for display on the shuttle. Atlantis' OMS pods will be returned to Kennedy and reinstalled on the shuttle before it is sent to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in 2013 for public display.
