The little spacecraft that could: Hayabusa - SpacePod 2010.06.22

Last week JAXA had a huge success in safely landing its Hayabusa craft in Australia. But before we go in to that, lets back up and talk a bit about what Hayabusa is and how we got to this point. On May 9th, 2003 at 4:23 UTC the Japanese solid fueled rocket M-5 launched from the Uchinoura Space Center. Aboard was a little spacecraft designed to do something no other vehicle had done before. It would approach an asteroid, hover, take a sample and return the sample safely to Earth. Hayabusa would not land but rather touch the surface with its sample capturing device and then move away, so we're not to call it a lander.Four ion engines kept the petal to the metal for 2 years straight and in 2005 the craft rendezvoused with the asteroid Itokawa. That asteriod was actually not its initial target. Originally Hayabusa was supposed to land on the asteroid 4660 Nereus, but a faulty M-5 rocket forced a delay which pushed the asteroid out of our reach. But that's not where the trouble started or ended.Even prior to the launch there were some problems. The non-lander was to deploy a small rover designed by NASA and developed by JPL on to the surface of the asteroid, but was cancelled due to budget reasons. Minus 2 points US. Then in 2002 JAXA needed to re-check the O-rings of their rocket as it was found to be made of a different material than was specified, and thus the launch was pushed the launch back to 2003. Finally after it did take off the Hayabusa spacecraft got slammed with a ...

A new beginning for America's Space Programs - Spacevidcast Live SVC-12M

In tradition of not wanting a launch (or live show) to end in the number 13, this episode has been re-named to SVC-12M. Why that numbering system? Well, we explain it in the open of the show! A lot of amazing stuff is happening within America's Space Programs on the 50th anniversary of JFK's iconic moon landing speech we talk about people stuck in the past of Apollo and some of the advantages of moving forward with companies like SpaceX. After the break we have some awesome video from Endeavour's solid rocket booster cameras as well as a Soyuz station flyaround with the Space Shuttle stuff attached to the International Space Station For more details on each story covered in this episode, visit the wiki article: wiki.spacevidcast.com and remember that if you would like to get your hands on the Spacevidcast After Dark SVCAD-12M episode you can sign up for Spacevidcast epic to get your hands on that and other amazing content. www.spacevidcast.com

SpaceX's Falcon 9 and SLC-40

Space Exploration Technologies or 'SpaceX' has already flown their single engine rocket, the Falcon 1, successfully twice. Now it's time to move on to bigger and badder things: the rocket with 8 additional Merlin engines and aptly named Falcon 9. One of the biggest changes between the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9, besides the engines, is the use of Florida's Cape Canaveral as a launching location.

Moon, Mars and Beyond with Andrew Chaikin - Live Show 3.28

On our 100th live show we have special guest Andrew Chaikin who is a very well known author for his books detailing the space program. ;Chaikin is best known as the author of A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts, widely regarded as the definitive account of the moon missions. First published in 1994, this acclaimed work was the main basis for Tom Hanks' 12-part HBO miniseries, From the Earth to the Moon, which won the Emmy for best miniseries in 1998. Chaikin spent eight years writing and researching A Man on the Moon, including over 150 hours of personal interviews with 23 of the 24 lunar astronauts (Apollo 13's Jack Swigert was already deceased). Apollo moonwalker Gene Cernan said of the book, "I've been there. Chaikin took me back." A new edition of the book, with a new afterword for the 50th anniversary of the space age, was published by Penguin in 2007. You can find Andrew online at

Beautiful images, beautiful launches and SVC on HDTV - SpacePod 2010.06.30

Beautiful images, beautiful launches and awesome new features on your SpacePod for June 30th, 2010 Lets take a look at some stunning images, shall we? We start or journey with an amazing picture taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or LRO. With the Wide Angle Camera pointed at Earth, the LRO team took this awesome view of our home planet. The top right of the picture at around 2:00 is the North Pole. You can also see Japan and Australia from here. I think I see a desktop wallpaper being generated out of this. Oh wait, we already did that. Head over to the Wallpapers, Ringtones and Downloads section of Spacevidcast to grab that one. Here is an amazing shot of an F-15 in the sky. What makes this space related? If you look at the bottom of the picture you can make out both Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Launch Pads, 39A and B. These images were taken by John Peltier and look just... WAIT... IS THAT A SHUTTLE LAUNCHING? Yes, if I'm not mistaken that's Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-132. If you look veeeery closely you can see the Spacevidcast media tent. OK, maybe not. These photos are just too good for desktop wallpapers, these are for framing. And if you want to get your own print copy you can do that at the URL on your screen. Prices start at around $8.00 US and I think this would make a great addition to your space gallery. We've all seen the Falcon 9 launch video before, but most sites, including our own only had low quality SD from the launch itself that buffered and ...

SpaceVidCast 10' C-Band Install

I had a great day today helping SVC with the installation of their 10' C-Band DIsh, I chose the BSC621 LNB to have the choice of C-Band and/or ku Band. The NASA channels at 72ºw were popping in with a strong 60% signal quality on my Trimax satellite meter. We used the USB DVB receiver (for now, they still have plans for a Set top HD box) and we were also getting a good 60% signal quality there. Again it took some time to configure the software and we gave out a LOUD shout when we finally got the Space Shuttle on the Pad in stunning HD quality. To say Ben was smiling would be the understatement of the year. I was so happy I left for home. A GREAT day in satellite and with friends! Peter S Bain www.psbsatellite.com

Spacevidcast: Online community for space enthusiasts

It's been almost 42 years since the first Americans set foot on the moon, but each time the US sends an astronaut into space, it's no less breathtaking an event to witness. Via its web site, Spacevidcast makes available the wonder of each launch while providing a wealth of other space-related news and events to its audience. "We do things like cover space shuttle launches in high definition, something that even NASA doesn't do," explains Benjamin Higginbothom, Executive Producer and Owner of Spacevidcast. "So when you go to our web site, you can get an actual 1280 X 720p streaming version of a space shuttle launch, or anything we can get our hands on in high definition. We cover any rocket launches. We have live weekly shows. We've got space pods. We have a ton of media that we throw at you, and we give you a ton of resources and tools to say, 'Hey, this is really cool'. We build on online community and engage with people with Twitter, Facebook, IRC realtime chat and bring it all into the show live." This combination of live video and web hosting requires significant computing resources. During a shuttle launch, the viewership will be larger than CNN and MSNBC combined, and the entire audience will be accessing the feed through Spacevidcast's web site. Consequently, Spacevidcast needs a hosting solution that scales up for big events such as a shuttle launch but scales back down once those events conclude. When it outgrew its initial provider, Spacevidcast decided to take ...
