Project Firework: The official lipdub-flashmob mash-up performed by the amazing staff at Forest Trail Elementary! On Friday, May 6th, 2011 the entire staff at Forest Trail Elementary made MAGIC in Austin, Texas as they filmed a lipdub to Katy Perry's "Firework." On Friday, May 20th, the lipdub was shared with all of the students at the final assembly of the school-year. As the camera in the lipdub video reached the doors to the cafeteria, the doors opened in real life and the teachers flashmobbed the students at the assembly! Students were amazed, parents were crying and the staff had a BLAST! In addition to surprising students and sending them off to summer with a BANG, one of our main goals of this project was to capture the strong bond we have among our staff at Forest Trail - our "Forest Trail Family." During the making of Project Firework, the staff was truly incredible as they worked together, putting forth great effort, endless creativity and boundless energy in the last few weeks of school in order to prepare for these events. The thing that stands out the most, though, is how much FUN we all had in the process! This started out as "something fun to do for the kids" and quickly evolved into an event that we will all remember for the rest of our lives. Three days were spent painting and getting to know the student body nearly 2000 strong. In the days and months following Hurricane Katrina, I photographed people and places along the Gulf Coast as part of the Red Cross Public Affairs team. This is a collection of my personal favorites of those images. Producing this video evoked a surge of emotions: remembering how awe-struck I was at how horrific and extensive the damage was, the stunned and haunted look on the faces of the Katrina survivors I met, the stories of how they weathered the storm that night, and how they weathered the aftermath of Katrina, enduring unfathomable hardships. The awe-inspiring commitment, strength, courage and spirit of all of the Red Crossers I worked with, many of whom, although spread across the country, I count among my good friends today, took my breath away.

The story of having it all, then falling from grace and losing all. A nobody with nothing at all. Unforgivable. An all time low. Forever. And yet somehow, being given all back again. The story to highlight true worship.The why, how, where & when. You see, there is a big difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it's core Jesus' gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can't do your own list of rules and feel "not good enough" for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don't represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God! This is it. Sweet dreams... you are not alone.
