The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998, with 12 of the 32 aircraft being destroyed in accidents, though none were lost to enemy action.

With the introduction of their piston-driven AR-15, the SR-556, their new direction in the acceptance of tactical guns is solidified. This overcomes a past Bill Ruger-era disdain for the such guns in the hands of civilian, a misguided policy that has long since been overturned. Because of this, the mere fact the SR-556 is a Ruger makes it something special. The good news is that the gun does not disappoint even when subjected to extensive shooting and evaluation as we did at TNP. In tactical Run N Guns the SR performed well: accurate, fast shooting, well-equipped, and reliable. It won over all the shooters, including me. Fifty yard accuracy with an unmagnified red dot was impressive with some groups but opened up some at 100 yards. The gun overall showed about a 2 MOA capability at 100 yards with regular ball ammo. Some 1 MOA groups with this regular ammo were achieved but were non-standard. With match grade ammo and careful benchresting, I think the gun might be 1 MOA capable. A better trigger should aid this quest for max accuracy of the SR-556. The design seems sound and squared away with a nice selection of supporting accessories. With a trim proprietary Troy Industries 10 quad rail and included covers, Troy BUIS, 3 30-rd Magpul PMAGs, Hogue grip, CAA collapsible stock, and Ruger soft case <b>...</b>

The Aviation Place: www.kbvp.com The SR-71 Blackbird was in service from 1964 to 1998 and was operated by the US Air Force from United States and select NATO air bases. Capable of speeds in excess of mach 3+(2200 mph+) and 85000 feet, the Blackbird was the most capable platform for strategic reconnaissance. It's ability to launch to a specific target and return with the required intelligence in a matter of hours was unsurpassed by any other platform or country. The SR-71 was developed by the infamous Lockheed Skunk Works and the primary construction material was a Titanium alloy. The two Pratt & Whitney J-58-P4/32500 lb. thrust engines had aerospikes at the inlet of the engine. The spikes moved in and out in order to control the airflow through the engine during the transition from subsonic to supersonic speeds. This feature, coupled with the afterburners unique design, allowed the SR-71 to cruise in continuous afterburner with a high degree of efficiency.

The SR-71 Blackbird in flight video. This video is shot with the SR-71 flying at near minimum flight speed as there are few aircraft that could match the speed of SR-71, for more than a few minutes at best, even at it's lower end operation speeds. During the refueling sequence, note that near the end of the refueling cycle, the KC-135 appears to be nose down in flght attitude. This is because as the SR-71 nears fuel capacity, it must increase speed, so the KC-135 must go into a shallow dive with the throttles to the firewall, and fly at maximum operating speed, with the SR-71 wallowing around behind it at near minimum flight speed. I know an SR-71 pilot or two, and I have been told the true maximum speed of the aircraft was never actually reached, or at least that speed was never declassified and so is not stated. This aircraft is the source of the infamous $500 hammer. As usual, the claims of waste for buying hammers for $500 is made by people who don't know anything about what they are saying. The $500 hammer is made of Titanium, as is a lot of the SR-71, and because dis-similar metals cause corrosion on contact, a Titanium hammer was made to work on this aircraft. The same is said for those who comment of the "leaking" of fuel on the ground and at low altitude. The aircraft is designed to expand, due to friction with the atmosphere, as much as 1 foot in lenght at operational speeds and altitude. The fuel, JP-7 is only used on the SR-71 and is actually part of the heat <b>...</b>
