Terrorism Targets Civilians or the State?

Terrorism is such a big issue that I am always surprised the definition of "terrorism" is not more rigorously examined, especially in the media, including from sources such as Time magazine and Fox News' "Fox and Friends," neither of which do a very good job on this issue, as I show in this video. The Time magazine cover and article I show in this video are available online at tinyurl.com The two short clips I use from Fox News in this video come from a segment broadcast on "Fox and Friends" on November 16, 2009, of an interview with former Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey discussing the attack on Fort Hood involving Major Nidal Malik Hasan that is currently available in full online at www.foxnews.com I also fairly use an image of a 1960 lunch counter sit-in taken in Greensboro, North Carolina, taken by UPI that is available from the Library of Congress online at www.loc.gov The "International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism" excerpt I show in my video is available online at www.un.org And, finally, as always, you can find DOZENS and DOZENS more examples of Fox News bias on my Fox News bias playlist on YouTube at www.youtube.com

Ranking Freedom in the 50 States

Which state is most free when it comes to personal, social, and economic issues? "Freedom in the 50 States: An Index of Personal and Economic Freedom" ( mercatus.org ) provides one answer to just that question. Political scientists Jason Sorens (University at Buffalo) and William P Ruger (Texas State) looked at everything from drug policy to civil union statutes to business regulations and tax rates to rank each state across multiple dimensions. Published by the Mercatus Center ( mercatus.org ) at George Mason University appraise each state in the union on their economic, social and personal liberty to come up with their final ranking. Maybe Jean-Paul Sartre was right about hell being other people: At the top of the list are a lot of states where almost nobody lives and at the bottom are states where just about everybody lives. Reason Magazine senior editor Katherine Mangu-Ward sat down with Sorens and Ruger, to talk about their results, their methodology and why New York City may not be as free as New Yorkers believe. Shot by Josh Swain,Jim Epstein and Meredith Bragg; Edited by Meredith Bragg. Approximately 9:20 minutes. Time Magazine: Prospect Of Civil War In US "Doesn't Seem That Far Fetched" - Alex Jones Tv 1/2

Paul Joseph Watson www.infowars.com www.prisonplanet.tv www.infowars.net October 20, 2010 With protesters in France entering a seventh day of strikes and demonstrations against draconian austerity measures, many political observers in the US are now wondering how long it will be before similar scenes unfold on American streets, with even Time Magazine now conceding that the prospect of a civil war in the States "doesn't seem that far fetched". To be clear, Stephen Gandel's article entitled Will the Federal Reserve Cause a Civil War? largely dismisses the possibility that the Fed's upcoming November 3rd meeting, during which Ben Bernanke is expected to announce a fresh round of money printing, will prompt national uproar, but it doesn't exactly debunk the notion of longer term social dislocation as a backlash to the crumbling economy, as many are now forecasting. As we highlighted yesterday in a piece that was later picked up by the Drudge Report, it's only a matter of time before Americans are hit with almost identical austerity measures to those that have caused the French to set up fuel blockades, stage running battles with riot police, halt air and rail travel, and virtually shut down some areas of the country. The question remains -- how will Americans react if the Obama administration pushes ahead with its plan to seize all private 401(k) pensions, which will be swallowed up by the Social Security Administration under the banner of mandatory Guaranteed Retirement ...

Never Enough: William Voegeli on America's Limitless Welfare State

"The denial of the possibility that there is an endpoint [to the welfare state] is crucial to the liberal enterprise," says Dr. William Voegeli, author of the new book, Never Enough: America's Limitless Welfare State and a visiting scholar at Claremont McKenna College's Henry Salvatori Center for the Study of Individual Freedom in the Modern World. In this Reason.tv interview, Voegeli traces recent federal government expansions to President Franklin Roosevelt's introduction of a "second Bill of Rights" that included the right to housing, education, and medical care. Christopher Hitchens: Bah, Humbug on Christmas [Updated 12/19/2011]

UPDATE 12/19/2011: When journalist Christopher Hitchens died on December 15, 2011 he was soon followed in the grave by North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, a loathsome figure whose atrocities Hitchens spent a fair amount of time of documenting. Given the proximity in time of their deaths, Reason is happy to re-release this 2007 featuring Hitchens' dramatic reading of Tom Lehrer's "Christmas Song." Taped at Reason's DC headquarters before a crowd of about 150 people, Hitchens begins his performance with a peroration about one-party states in North Korea--and North America. On Monday, December 17, 2007 Reason hosted a "Very Special, Very Secular Christmas Party" at its Washington, DC headquarters. The evening's special event was a dramatic reading of Tom Lehrer's "Christmas Carol" by Christopher Hitchens, author of God Is Not Great, Why Orwell Matters, No One Left to Lie To, and many other books. "It may have struck you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's a big relationship between this marvelous time of year and living in a one-party state," Hitchens told the overflow crowd of 250. "You can't go anywhere without listening to the same music. You can't go anywhere without hearing the name of the Great Leader, and his son, the Dear Leader....All broadcasts, all songs, all jokes, all references are, just for that magic few weeks, just exactly like living in...North Korea." Sweden's March Towards Capitalism: Economist Andreas Bergh on the "Capitalist Welfare State"

In The Capitalist Welfare State, Lund University economist Andreas Bergh explains how Sweden has managed to increase economic productivity despite its large public sector. Bergh says that despite popular mythology, Sweden is not a socialist success story but instead owes its economic growth to the lowered tax rates and deregulation of the early 1990s, which allowed innovation and investment to flourish. Bergh also discusses how Sweden's national voucher program revitalized the country's educational system and warns that Americans who are hoping to emulate Swedish success by growing the public sector are learning the wrong lessons from Sweden. Produced by Ted Balaker and Daniel B. Klein; filmed by Jonathan Liberman and Henrik Devell; edited by Zach Weissmueller; with special thanks to Niclas Berggren, Martin Borgs, Nils Karlson, and the Ratio Institute . New Hampshire Nannies: Why is the "Live Free or Die" State Banning Fish Pedicures?

The always-expanding Nanny State does more than treat adults like children, it can also smother job creation—even in the "live free or die" state of New Hampshire. So as the national debate "pivots" from health care to jobs, Reason.tv suggests that politicians looking to"do something" about the stubbornly high unemployment rate first undo the regulations that ensnare entrepreneurs like Kim Ong. Ong's parents brought her family from Vietnam to the United States in 1985. "They said this is a country of freedom, a country of opportunities," recalls Ong, who took their words to heart and now owns Kim's Spa & Nails in Derry, New Hampshire. When the recession hit she began looking for new ways to generate business. Her thoughts turned to a luxurious practice that's popular in parts of Asia—fish pedicures.Ong spent over $6000 to purchase fish and equipment, a big investment for the small business owner. However, her gamble paid off when she saw how much customers loved having their feet exfoliated by tiny fish. Soon Ong had a waiting list for this hip new service. But instead of hiring more employees, Ong hired a lawyer to plead her case to state regulators who questioned the safety and hygeine of fish pedicures. Unfortunately for Ong and her customers, New Hampshire's Board of Barbering, Cosmetology, and Esthetics banned the practice. That's right, the state that lets adults motorcycle without a helmet or drive without a seat belt won't tolerate tiny fish nibbling at the dead ...

Bitcoin & The End of State-Controlled Money: Q&A with Jerry Brito

Bitcoin is the world's first fully decentralized, peer-to-peer (p2p) virtual currency. It allows users to make anonymous and untraceable cash transactions anywhere in the world without any sort of real-world intermediary. So unlike PayPal and other online services, it can't be squeezed in the same way by governments or other control agents. Created in 2009 by a shadowy figure who goes by the name Satoshi Nakamoto, there are currently about 6 million bitcoins in circulation. That number will eventually rise, in regular intervals, to a total of 21 million by 2033. A money system without any sort of central bank? A currency whose supply increases at a steady and predictable rate according to a concept elucidated by the Nobel laureate economist Milton Friedman? Just how revolutionary is Bitcoin? Reason.tv sat down with Mercatus Senior Research Fellow Jerry Brito to learn how Bitcoin operates and what the implications are for traditional state-based fiat currencies. "Whether Bitcoin succeeds or fails is neither here nor there," says Brito, who predicts that currencies in the future will almost certainly be deregulated and decentralized - with or without governments' consent. Read Brito on Bitcoin here (techland.time.com and here (techliberation.com For responses to his critics and more info on Bitcoin, go here (techliberation.com About 2.30 minutes. Creating a Free State: Filmmaker Christina Heller on Building a Libertopia in New Hampshire

Tired of waiting for a libertarian United States of America? Maybe the answer is to start small. Enter Libertopia, a documentary by director Christina Heller and producer Craig Goodale that follows three guys' attempt to make one state free. Heller sat down with Reason.tv's Ted Balaker to discuss the Free State Project, why she admires libertarians, and how a persuasive band of Free Staters just might have transformed her from a liberal into a libertarian. The Free State Project was proposed by a Yale PhD student in 2001, and the goal was to convince 20000 pro-liberty activists to commit to moving to New Hampshire in hopes of returning the state to its "Live Free or Die" roots. So far, the project reports that there are more than 10000 participants, and almost 900 "early movers" have already settled in the Granite State. The documentary follows one man who is walking across the country to raise awareness about the Free State Project, another who already moved to New Hampshire and works as an advocate for medical marijuana patients, and a Ron Paul-inspired teenager who decides to leave his friends and family in California to live in New Hampshire. Interview by Ted Balaker. Shot by Zach Weissmueller, Hawk Jensen, and Alex Manning. Edited by Weissmueller. Approximately 9 minutes.
