booker ervin stolen moments bachelor party SUBSCRIBE! Booker Telleferro Ervin II (October 31, 1930 July 31, 1970[1]) was an American hard bop tenor saxophone player. He was perhaps best known for his association with bassist Charles Mingus. Ervin was born in Denison, Texas and after teaching himself tenor saxophone while in the United States Air Force moved to the Boston area and studied at Berklee College of Music. His tenor playing was characterised by a strong, tough sound and blues/gospel phrasing, perhaps inspired by growing up in the south. Some thought his style was influenced by John Coltrane, but it is thought they developed their styles independently, and beyond some 'sheets of sounds' similarities, they were distinctively different.

Chicago: Auditorium Theatre, March 3, 1988. Frank Zappa runs into Sting before his concert. They meet, and Zappa asks if he'd like to do a song with the band. A couple hours later, this awesomeness happened. Zappa's 12-piece pocket big band tears off a fat, brassy cover of Oliver Nelson's classic minor blues "Stolen Moments," and after a great trumpet solo by Walt Fowler, FZ introduces Sting, who rants about the time a few years before when Jimmy Swaggart denounced The Police's "Murder By Numbers" and called them "The sons of Satan." Well, now, of course, Swaggart was embroiled in his own sinful problems, and Sting gleefully riffs on it and then croons a *very* smooth rendition of the song modified to fit over the Nelson chord changes. Brilliant. Pitches upward to a badass guitar solo by FZ and wraps with a return to the Nelson head. On the CD these are two separate tracks and there's a bit of a fade-out toward the end of Fowler's solo, and a fade-in again as it clearly transitions to the Sting track. I did a little editing and managed to even things out and join them together as they actually happened and should be heard. As far as I'm aware, these two tracks are not available as one anywhere else on the web. Great, great, great stuff from 'Broadway The Hard Way,' an album which earned Zappa his final Grammy nomination. Today's upload date would have been his 70th birthday. Oliver Nelson - Stolen moments (1975) One of the last sessions Oliver Nelson cut, recorded in the mid 70s for the Japanese East Wind label, and one of our favorites, a nice soul jazz sleeper. The band includes Bobby Bryant, Jerome Richardson, Mike Wofford, and Shelly Manne, with a nice 6 piece front line, so the horn parts sound nice & full. MARK MURPHY. Two-night appearance at the Kitano, New York City, USA. www.kitano.com. This is a performance from August 1, 2009. Once again the "Precious One" showered us with his vibrant voice. Looking handsome and dapper as usual, Mr. Murphy was clad in impeccable head-to-toe garb on both nights. Each evening, he set the mood from the very first note and conducted our heartstrings through to the very last note! As only Mr. Murphy can, he sings the words FIRST before he applies them to melody. And as he applies them to melody, we eagerly wait for his phrasing ..... and then, enter the inflections in his voice ..... one is engaged by layer upon layer of intrigue! After studying his work for decades, one clearly understands how Mr. Murphy has singularly re-arranged the landscape of vocal jazz. Time and time again, he shows us where it's at, and how it ought to be. Both nights at the Kitano were sold out. Many from the music industry were in attendance. Mr. Murphy's rendition of "Photograph" in particular, left not a dry eye in the house! Compared to some of his contemporaries, it was incredibly moving to experience Mr. Murphy maintain the same eloquent performance he's noted for! Mr. Murphy ....... you are a gem!
