On 7th August 2009 typhoon Morakot slammed into the city of Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan. I traveled to Taiwan and met up with British storm chaser Dave Johnson to try an intercept the eye of Morakot. At around 2315 local time on 7th August the eye passed right over us in downtown Hualien.

Video courtesy: holytornado.com The ferocious power of one of the devastating tornadoes that struck the US state of Oklahoma on Tuesday was captured on camera by so-called "storm chasers", who followed the twister as it left a trail of devastation in its wake. The tornado is seen churning through the Chickasha area, 25 miles (40 kilometres) southwest of Oklahoma City. Officials said a 26-year-old woman died when the twister hit a mobile home park where residents had been asked to leave. A dozen people were injured and hundreds were displaced in the area, they added. That twister was just one of the many tornadoes that struck Oklahoma and also the states of Arkansas and Kansas on Tuesday, killing at least 15 people. Those powerful storms came two days after the nation's deadliest single tornado since 1950 killed at least 125 people on Sunday in Joplin in southwest Missouri.

I travelled to Ilan in northeastern Taiwan with storm chaser Geoff Mackley to intercept typhoon Sinlaku. The intense northern eyewall passed right over us in the middle of the night on 13th September 2008 where we documented winds up to 130mph and blinding rain.

TornadoVideos.net Dominator intercepts violent wedge tornado southwest of Wadena, Minnesota, measuring incredible vertical winds with the radar, and launching parachute probes into the tornado with the cannon. We deployed in the strongest eastern side of the wedge, and the 150+ mph winds ripped off the room anemometer, sand-blasted the paint, and caused us to slide across the road with the hydraulics deployed. A downburst strikes the north side of Norman, OK on 14 June 2011 at about 7:30 pm We went up to the North Base near Max Westheimer airport to shoot some time lapse footage of a developing supercell west of town, only to have it drop a microburst that surged southeastward over us. RaXPol was, semi-coincidentally, deployed nearby, and collected data during the event. In less than three minutes, we went from light rain to 70+ mph winds, golf ball-sized hail, and near-zero visibility. The doors of several airplane hangars at Max Westheimer airport blew off, and one disintegrated as it blew across the field in front of us. We got lucky. Damage on the east side of Norman was reported to have been much, much worse - windows blown out, fences blown down, and chimneys collapsed. I may have jumped the gun by labeling this a "microburst" when I uploaded my video; evidently NWS is avoiding that terminology until they do a damage survey. The velocity presentation from the Will Rogers TDWR, however, showed a semi-circular gust front surging toward Norman from the storm in question. (Update: On 15 June, NWS designated this event a downburst/microburst, based on damage survey and radar data: www.srh.noaa.gov tornatrix.net The radar in the video is the Rapid-Scan, X-band, Polarimetric, mobile Doppler radar (RaXPol for short.) Film footage posted on TornadoVideos.net showed debris flying as a tornado touched down in a field in Bowling Green, Missouri. Similar footage was shot in Carlinville, Illinois. No injuries were reported from the storms. Strong thunderstorms also battered the region and another round of severe weather is predicted for later this week. Utility crews are scrambling to restore power to tens of thousands of customers in Illinois affected by severe storms that included reports of tornadoes.

In the late afternoon, a supercell storm formed and intensified over Lake Huron, spawning a waterspout which came ashore and passed directly through the heart of Goderich. At its widest over downtown, the tornado was estimated to be 1.5 km across, and its path was an estimated 20 km long. This is raw footage taken by a young man, who is heard yelling, "GET IN THE BASEMENT", as he jumps into his car. At the beginning you can see how extremely close he really is to the tornado bearing down. The squealing tires are heard as he takes off. Later in the video he catches up to the tornado again .. it's very close at times & you can hear the roar of the wind, the hailstones pelting his car & see the trees bent over. Sean's frustrations with Reed boil over as they cross paths during a chase on the back roads of New Mexico. The next day everyone heads to the Texas Panhandle, but violent storms soon turn the dirt roads into quagmires that could trap the chasers at the worst of times. By the end of the day, Reed and Tim are trapped in the mud between two tornadoes but they seize the chance to get up close and film the violent twisters and deploy science probes.

Storm Chaser Dan Robinson was chasing the storms near Blair and Cooperton, OK Friday Evening when he intercepted the tornado warned storms. The storms produced several violent rain wrapped tornadoes. At the end of May 21, 2011, the Titans had captured over 10 tornadoes on video from a pair of LP Cyclic Supercells. This could have easily been the best chase day of the 2011 Storm Season and few people were there to witness these supercells on a true Boom or Bust day.
