On Friday December 12, 2008 sailor, artist and boat builder Reid Stowe completed 600 of his 1000 Days Non-Stop at Sea voyage on his handmade schooner Anne. On his return to New York in 2010, he will have spent nearly three years without stopping or resupplying, surpassing the current 658-day record for nonstop solo sailing held by the Australian Jon Sanders. After day 658, he aims to set the mark "for the longest period on record by crew or individual ever during a continuous voyage". Beyond the records he challenges, in a world consumed by issues of ecology, energy and food, Stowe's challenge is a studied example of self-sufficiency. Surviving on rainwater, fresh fish, sprouted beans from stored provisions, and supplying his own energy by water and the sun while regenerating his spirit with yoga and prayer, Stowe is evidence that challenges of ecological sensitivity and survival can be met spiritually and pragmatically. The schooner contains three years of food and supplies, and provides its own energy for lights, winches, and satellite communications from solar panels, and water generators driven by the forward motion of the boat. Very large trash compactor installed in Stowe, Vermont. This compactor has been here operating daily for over 30 years with little to no downtime (at over 15 tons of trash/day). This machine has an approx 74" by 90" mouth. It is powered by a 30HP electric motor running a 3000psi hydraulic compressor (manually-controlled). Basically, if the 'blade' can get a bite, it'll eat it . All the 'blade' is, is a 2" thick steel plate box just under 3 feet tall that merely slides back and forth being pushed by two 8.5' long cylinders (7" shaft thickness) mounted above one another, that pushes all material into the back end of an aluminum walking-floor trailer. When that trailer begins to get full (physically) the fun begins. The blade-box will move/displace 4.84 cubic yards of material per pass. The hopper will hold 9.12 cubic yards (not counting blade displacement) for a total of 13.96 cubic yards of holding capacity with a fully retracted blade. This video is of an almost empty trailer (maybe 7 tons onboard) thus, not much actual compaction. We stop the trailers at about 23 tons, to make them road-legal. More to come!

Cars have 1600 Ford Duratec 16 valve fuel injected engines and 4 speed Hewland racing gearboxes giving about 140bhp-150bhp in a 450Kg car - so 0-60 in 4.5sec with top speed between 100mph & 120mph on start/finish straight depending on conditions. Experience starts with briefing and 2 warm up sessions with single seaters split into small groups following a number of instructors in pace cars and building speed as drivers learn the track. Drivers are then released onto the circuit alone for final free lapping session - which has no rev limiting or speed restrictions - and overtaking is allowed on both straights. Fantastic fun - I think I lapped everyone once and a few people twice! My best lap was 45.51sec - but when the F1 teams test their cars on the Stowe circuit they go round in under 20sec though! In the same 4.5sec it takes these cars to go from 0 to 60mph an F1 car will go from 0 to 100mph and back to 0 again - awesome! RM ;-)
