It's the third largest gulf in the world, and geopolitically is of paramount importance. 68 percent of the world's known resources of gas and oil come from this region. And it's through the Hormuz Strait, a chokepoint 21 miles wide, that all goods oil and gas going to and from the Gulf must pass through. It's the only exit point into the open ocean, and at least one ocean-liner passes through every ten minutes. Iran flanks the whole northern coast of the Persian Gulf. That means it has jurisdiction over a large part of it, and therefore must play a major role in guaranteeing the region's security. A top Iranian military official has said blocking a crucial oil export channel will be "easier than drinking a glass of water." Experts say the West should listen, because Iran's influence in the region has grown significantly. My thoughts on Iran blocking the strait of hormuz might differ from others, but the facts are all below. They never signed the laws of the sea, and it is by definition Irans territorial waters (most of it), so I see no reason why Iran couldn't close down the part of the strait of hormuz that is theirs. Although, I do not think they coud hold it closed for long. Whether or not President Obama would do anything, Obama seems like he would take care of such a blockade.
