The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter was developed towards the end of World War II by fitting an enlarged upper fuselage onto a lower fuselage and wings which were essentially the same as the B-50 Superfortress with the tail, wing, and engine layout being nearly identical. It was built before the death of Boeing president, Philip G. Johnson. The prototype XC-97 was powered by the 2200 hp (1640 kW) Wright R-3350 engine, and was fitted with a built-in ramp and a hoist to help in the loading and unloading of supplies and personnel through the large clamshell-type doors in the belly. On January 9, 1945 the first prototype, piloted by Major Curtin L. Reinhardt, flew from Seattle to Washington, DC in 6 hours 4 minutes, an average speed of 383 mph (616 km/h) with 20000 pounds (lb) of cargo, which was for its time rather impressive for such a large aircraft. Production models featured the 3500 hp (2610 kW) Pratt & Whitney Wasp Major engine, the same engine as the B-50. The C-97 had a useful payload of 35000 lb (16 t) and could carry two normal trucks or light tanks. The C-97 was also the first mass produced air transport to feature cabin pressurization, which made long range missions somewhat more comfortable for the crew and passengers. C-97s evacuated casualties during the Korean War. C-97s also participated in the airlift of relief materials to Uli airstrip (Biafra) during the Nigerian Civil War. Coast Guard Rescue of Pan Am Stratocruiser
On October 16, 1956, a Pan Am Clipper aircraft en route from San Francisco to Honolulu, Hawaii -- the Sovereign of the Skies -- was forced to ditch in the Pacific. Fortunately for the passengers, the US Coast Guard vessel Ponchartrain was close at hand. This incredible film shows the efforts of the airplane pilot and co-pilot, and Coast Guard captain and crewmen, to save the passengers after a ditching at sea. The incident remains one of the proudest moments in the history of the Coast Guard. Features footage of Owasco class cutters USCGC Androscoggin (WHEC-68) and USCG Pontchartrain (WHEC-79).

THE AMAZING PLANE THAT MADE COMERCIAL FLIGHT LOOK GOOD THE BOEING 377 STRATOCRUIZER. Despite a service record, remembered for one or two early disasters arising from a propeller design fitted to the Stratocruiser in its earlier years, Boeing's remarkable airliner was one of the most capable of post-war propeller-driven transports, and certainly among the most luxurious. Only 55 were built as airliners, joined eventually by the reconditioned prototype to make a total of 56. Another 60 of this general design, with significant engineering differences, were built as C-97 military transports, but the majority were built as KC-97 tankers, with many more military successors to follow. The jet-powered Boeing 707 would regain Boeing's dominance in the civil airliner market, while the KC-135 would continue to serve as a jet tanker into the twenty-first century. The lengendary Lockheed C-130 of the mid-1950s was somewhat similar in size and speed, but as it adopted turboprop power and was packaged from ground-up as a combat airlifter with tail ramp for operation from rough fields, it would become one of the most successful military aircraft of all time.

www.henrytenby.com These wonderful films capture the golden age of the British airline scene of the late 1940s and 1950s. This was the time when BOAC was emerging as Britain's international overseas airline, and BEA was Britain's leading domestic and short haul carrier. It was also during this glorious era that Britain was a world leader in the development of commercial aeroplanes with many marques in the offing including the Brabazon, Elizabethan, De Havilland Comet, and of course the world's first turboprop, the Rolls Royce Dart powered Vickers Viscount. The Vickers Viscount was also a huge success in North America, and was ordered in large numbers by Capital Airlines of the USA. This DVD features two promotional films that highlight the Viscount in service with Capital in the 1950s.

A2A Simulation's B377 Stratocruiser - Landing at Santa Barbara
Landing the beast that is the Boeing B377 Stratocruiser at Santa Barbara following a 2.5 hour flight. Passengers had finished up a dinner of Chef's Salad ;) and were all strapped in for the landing. After a long flight managing the engines myself during climb and cruise, I finally let (virtual) Flight Engineer "Larry" take care of the intercoolers, cowl flaps, etc for this approach and you'll hear him back there going through the motions verbally as we come in to land. Runway was short and I came in a little too high - result was that my rate of descent was too fast. I had to get down quick in order to have enough runway to stop the machine from overshooting. A bit of flare at the last moment before the wheels touched down helped to arrest the fast rate of descent. Touchdown still a little too rough for my liking, but at least there was none of that dreaded 'bounce'. This add-on is the B377 Stratocruiser "Captain of the Ship" by A2A Simulations for Flight Simulator X.

Arlene, as poor seamstress Kathy wins, by charming an old geezer, a trip by BOAC Boeing 377 Stratocruiser to London, where she meets more men to exploit for her ambitions. She is driven in Armstrong Siddeley 346 limousine to the Mayfair hotel, in time graduating to riding in a Rolls Royce in Paris. In the end a cheated and rejected fiancee stalks her, and she kills her rich husband by mistake. She winds up in court and in a Citroen 15CV traction avant police car. The CD I bought says the movie is out of copyright.
