Dispersant Treated Oil Slick Disappears Below the Surface when Fleet of Skimmers Try Recovery

"We did send a fleet of skimmers out to that oil and they were able, as soon as they arrived on scene, the oil actually broke up and it broke into small particles," said US Coast Guard Rear Adm. Paul Zunkunft, the oil spill's federal on-scene coordinator. What the skimmers were able to capture was an oily water mix that eventually added up to just one barrel of recoverable oil. Yet, while the latest threat of oil may have avoided Grand Isle, there are worries about what may be happening underneath the surface of the water. "I'm not worried what's on top no more," said Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle. "I'm worried about what's on the bottom and I still can't get a clear answer for that. Camardelle's fears center on so-called "oil plumes," possibly lurking off the coast, underwater in the Gulf of Mexico. They can be hard to see from the air. The mayor said he would like to find a way to track them, using some of the vessels out on the water for the oil spill response. "We're looking to see if we can drag some type of nets and check the bottoms -- and that's one of the things we want to check out -- on the bottoms," Camardelle said. "Because, gradually, BP's going to pull out of here and say, 'we got you cleaned up.' And in the back of our minds, we're just worried about what's on the bottom." Gov. Bobby Jindal said those concerns are part of the reason his administration is pushing for a seafood certification program, which could help determine not just the safety of ...

Iran navy to build new destroyers-Sahar Urdu News 14-01-11 Tehran

Iranian Navy's Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Gholam-Reza Khadem Bigham says the navy aims to build new destroyers with state-of-the-art design and defense systems. "The assembly line for the production of missile-launching frigates with advanced systems and modern features have been set up," IRNA quoted Rear Admiral Bigham as saying on Friday. He hailed the country's first domestically-build and developed guided missile destroyer Jamaran and said, "The military capabilities ... need to meet our defense requirements to protect the Islamic Republic's interests against aerial, surface and sub-surface threats." Last February, the Iranian Navy launched the Jamaran destroyer with a displacement of around 1420 tons, fitted with modern radars and other electronic warfare capabilities. Jamaran, a multi-mission destroyer, can carry 120-140 personnel on board and is armed with a variety of surface-to-air missiles. It has a top speed of up to 30 knots and has a helipad. It also features highly advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface systems. The vessel has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons. Rear Admiral Bigham also said that the Naval Forces of the Islamic Republic Army is fully capable of defending the country as they continue to upgrade the navy's defense systems. He underscored the navy's plans for longer missions in international waters and pointed out that more durable surface and sub-surface fleet were required to achieve the goal. For ...

KMS Admiral Hipper

Admiral Hipper, the first of five ships of her class, was the lead ship of the Admiral Hipper--class of heavy cruisers which served with the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. The ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1935 and launched February 1937; Admiral Hipper entered service shortly before the outbreak of war, in April 1939. The ship was named after Admiral Franz von Hipper, commander of the German battlecruiser squadron during the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and later commander-in-chief of the German High Seas Fleet. Admiral Hipper saw a significant amount of action during the war. She led the assault on Trondheim during Operation Weserübung; while en route to her objective, she sank the British destroyer HMS Glowworm. In December 1940, she broke out into the Atlantic Ocean to operate against Allied merchant shipping, though this operation ended without significant success. In February 1941, Admiral Hipper sortied again, sinking several merchant vessels before eventually returning to Germany via the Denmark Strait. The ship was then transferred to northern Norway to participate in operations against convoys to the Soviet Union, culminating in the Battle of the Barents Sea on 31 December 1942, where she was damaged and forced to withdraw by the light cruisers HMS Sheffield and HMS Jamaica. Enraged by the defeat at the battle, Adolf Hitler ordered the majority of the surface warships scrapped, though Admiral Karl Dönitz was able to ...

Royal Navy Type 45

The United Kingdom's Type 45 destroyer (also known as the D or Daring class) is a state-of-the-art air defence destroyer programme of the Royal Navy which will replace its Type 42 destroyers. The first ship in the class, HMS Daring, was launched on 1 February 2006 and commissioned on 23 July 2009. The ships are now built by BAE Systems Surface Ships. The first three ships were assembled by BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions from partially prefabricated "blocks" built by BAE Systems itself and VT Group. The UK originally sought to procure air defence ships as part of the 8 nation NFR-90 project and later the Horizon Common New Generation Frigate programme with France and Italy. The Type 45s take advantage of some Horizon development work and utilise the Sea Viper missile system (the SAMPSON radar variant of the Principal Anti-Air Missile System). In an "intensive attack" a single Type 45 could simultaneously track, engage and destroy more targets than five Type 42 destroyers operating together.[7] The Daring class represents the largest escort type ever built for the Royal Navy. After Daring's launch on 1 February 2006, former First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Alan West stated that it would be the Royal Navy's most capable destroyer ever, as well as the world's best air defence ship.

The German U-Boat War file

www.britishlocalhistory.co.uk They were the only thing that really frightened me' So said the usually steadfast Winston Churchill of the German Navy's U-Boat fleet - the dreaded Wolf Pack, which stalked the Atlantic depths, bringing instant death to merchantman and warship alike. Together with a formidable surface fleet, the U-Boats challenged the Royal Navy's traditional supremacy of the oceans, countering Britain's strength in numbers with a reign of silent terror. A decade of secret rebuilding had brought forth capital ships like the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen - names to strike fear into any Allied seafarer. However, it was from under the water that the biggest threat was to come. Commanded by Admiral Karl Doenitz, the submarines laid waste to shipping, cutting supply lines and striking from within convoys where Allied escorts dare not use guns. The U-Boat captains were the equivalent of Luftwaffe aces - ruthless, cunning and ice-cool under pressure. Enduring harsh conditions for months on end and working in darkness with no chance of escape, this was truly a war of nerves. 'There is no margin for error on a submariner' said one captain. 'You are either alive or dead.' on May 4 1945, Doenitz issued orders to cease hostilities. 'You have fought like lions' he said to his valiant survivors. 'You are laying down your arms after a heroic fight which knows no equals.' The story of that light is told here using rare archive footage, much of which has been ...

Revell Arado Ar 196 A-3 in 1/32 scale (building review)

This kit from Revell was released not a very long time ago. I was surprised by the amount of detail and the quality this kit offers for about 25€. The assembly was straigt forward and almost no problems occurred. In my opinion it is one of the best kits of the last years and I can highly recommend this kit. It won´t be my last one for sure! The Ar 196 was a shipboard reconnaissance aircraft built by the German firm Arado starting in 1936. The next year it was selected as the winner of a design contest, and became the standard aircraft of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) throughout World War II. The plane was loved by its pilots, who found it handled well both in the air and on the water. With the loss of the German surface fleet the A-1s were added to coastal squadrons, and continued to fly reconnaissance missions and submarine hunts into late 1944. Two notable operations were the capture of HMS Seal, and the repeated interception of RAF Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley bombers. Although it was no match for a fighter, it was considerably better than its Allied counterparts, and generally considered the best of its class. (Wikipedia)

My trip to New York City for Fleet Week of 2007

This is a narrated slideshow of photos (and a couple short videos) I shot while in New York City for Fleet Week of 2007. Fleet Week is an annual tradition where many ships and submarines from Norfolk, Groton and Mayport visit Manhattan and are treated hospitably by New Yorkers. It was one of the best weeks of my active duty career! I was an FC2 (SW) [second class fire controlman - surface warfare qualified] stationed aboard the USS WASP (LHD-1). I worked on the NATO SeaSparrow Surface Missile System. This is the first of what I hope will be MANY video slideshows of photos and videos I took in places I've visited around the world during my time in the Navy.

1940 The Victors of the River Plate

British Newsreel. February 26, 1940. The German propaganda machine had reported that Admiral Graf Spee had sunk a heavy cruiser and heavily damaged two light cruisers while only being lightly damaged herself. (This had a degree of truth in it - Exeter had been seriously damaged and was practically a hulk, while Admiral Graf Spee's damage appeared superficial rather than structural). Admiral Graf Spee's scuttling however was a severe embarrassment and difficult to explain on the basis of publicly available facts. The Battle of the River Plate was a contributory factor to Adolf Hitler's low opinion of the German surface fleet. The battle was a major propaganda victory for the British during the Phony War, and the reputation of First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill was enhanced.
