Alma Gluck, Efrem Zimbalist - Swanee River (1915)

Alma Gluck (born Reba Feinsohn; May 11, 1884-October 27, 1938) was an American soprano, one of the world's most famous female singers at the peak of her career (around 1910). Marcia Davenport was the child of her first marriage (to Bernard Gluck); Alma Gluck later married violinist Efrem Zimbalist and had two children, Efrem Jr. (Stephanie Zimbalist's father) and Maria. Gluck was born to a Jewish family in Iasi, Romania, the daughter of Zara and Leon Feinsohn.[1] Gluck moved to the United States at a young age. Although her initial success came at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, Gluck later concertized widely in America and became an early recording artist. Her recording of "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" for the Victor Talking Machine Co. was the first celebrity recording by a classical musician to sell one million copies. Gluck was a founder of the American Woman's Association. She retired to New Hartford, Connecticut to raise her family in 1925. Alma Gluck died at the relatively young age of 54, of liver failure. ---------------------------------------------------- Efrem Zimbalist, Sr. (9 April 1890 - February 22, 1985) was one of the world's most prominent concert violinists, as well as a composer, teacher, conductor and a long-time director of the Curtis Institute of Music. Zimbalist was born in the southwestern Russian city of Rostov on Don (Rostov-na-Donu), Russia, the son of Jewish parents Maria (née Litvinoff) and Aron Zimbalist, who was a conductor.By ...

Real State Song of Florida, "Old folks at home"

*I do not own any of the songs or pictures used in this video* This is a video I made using the REAL State Song of Florida, "Way down upon the Suwannee River". Our State song has come under fire lately by groups such as the naacp, who think that it should be changed because in one line it mentions "Darkies". I dont think its a big deal and I think they should leave it alonbe and let us keep our traditions. Heritage Not Hate, Long Live The Confederacy!!! -DEO VINDICE

Swanee River Boogie

The folk song "Swanee River (Old Folks at Home)" by SC Foster (which is Florida's official State Song) has inspired many boogie pianists (including Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson) to make a boogie version of this song. I've always been captivatd by Axel Zwingenberger's version of it, and this is my tribute to him ...

Swanee River - CHASE (Ennea 1972)........P'Dhede Ciptamas.wmv

Chase (the band) released their debut album Chase in April 1971. Bill Chase was joined by Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware, and Jerry Van Blair, three veteran jazz trumpeters who were also adept at vocals and arranging. They were backed up by a rhythm section consisting of Phil Porter on keyboards, Angel South on guitar, Dennis Johnson on bass, and Jay Burrid on percussion. Rounding out the group was Terry Richards, who was featured as lead vocalist on the first album. The album contains Chase's best-known song, "Get It On," released as a single that spent thirteen weeks on the charts beginning in May 1971. The song features what Jim Szantor of Downbeat magazine called "the hallmark of the Chase brass—complex cascading lines; a literal waterfall of trumpet timbre and technique." The band received a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, but was edged out by rising star Carly Simon. Chase released their second album, Ennea, in March 1972; the album's title is the Greek word for nine, a reference to the nine band members. The original lineup changed midway through the recording sessions, with Gary Smith taking over on drums and GG Shinn replacing Terry Richards on lead vocals. Although the first Chase album sold nearly 400000 copies, Ennea was not as well received by the public. One likely reason was a shift away from trumpet sections. As Bill Chase put it in a Downbeat interview, "I don't want people to be heavily conscious of a trumpet section. They should just hear good things ...

Billy Lee Riley - "Swanee River"

www.youtube.com RIP Billy Lee Riley ... 5/05/1933 -- 2/08/2009 Born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, the son of a sharecropper, Riley learned to play guitar from black farm workers. After 4 years in the Army, Riley first recorded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1955 before being lured to Sun Studios by Sam Phillips. He recorded "Trouble Bound" for Jack Clement and Slim Wallace. Sam Phillips obtained the rights and he released "Trouble Bound" b/w "Rock With Me Baby" on September 1, 1956 (Sun 245). His first hit was "Flyin' Saucers Rock and Roll" b/w "I Want You Baby" released February 23, 1957 (Sun 260) with backing piano by Jerry Lee Lewis, after which he recorded "Red Hot" b/w "Pearly Lee" released September 30, 1957 (Sun 277). "Red Hot" was showing a lot of promise as a big hit record, but Sam Phillips pulled the promotion and switched it to "Great Balls Of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis. The record was pulled without a lot of sales. He had other Sun recordings and they, likewise, did not have a lot of sales as his promotion had stopped. Considered good looking and with wild stage moves, Riley had a brief solo career with his backing band "The Little Green Men". Riley and his Little Green Men were the main Sun studio band. They were Riley, Roland Janes, JM Van Eaton, Marvin Pepper, and Jimmy Wilson, later joined by Martin Willis. In 1960, he left Sun, and started Rita Record label with Roland Janes. They produced the national hit record "Mountain Of Love" by Harold Dorman. He later started ...

Old Folks at Home-Swanee River

【Old Folks at Home-Swanee River】 故鄉的親人2分14秒◇ Lyrics: Stephen C. Foster ◇ Music: Stephen C. Foster ① Way down upon the Swanee River, Far, far away That's where my heart is turning ever That's where the old folks stay All up and down the whole creation, Sadly I roam Still longing for the old plantation And for the old folks at home All the world is sad and dreary everywhere I roam Oh Lordy, how my heart grows weary Far from the old folks at home ② All 'round the little farm I wandered, When I was young Then many happy days I squandered, Many the songs I sung When I was playing with my brother, Happy was I Oh, take me to my kind old mother, There let me live and die ③ One little hut among the bushes, One that I love Still sadly to my mem'ry rushes, No matter where I rove When shall I see the bees a humming, All 'round the comb When shall I hear the banjo strumming, Down by my good old home Chorus
