Athens War Zone: Latest dramatic footage of Syntagma square riots

It's make or brake today in Greece - as the government sits down to vote on tax hikes and spending cuts. It's viewed as the country's last chance to stave off default - something that could have ruinous consequences for the Euro. But public opposition has turned violent. Scenes from downtown Athens resemble a warzone as protesters clash with police amid volleys of tear gas. Hundreds of thousands of people nationwide walked off their jobs in the strike against austerity. They say drowning the country in debt at crippling interest rates has failed once - and it'll fail again.

Guard changing in Greece, Athen Syntagma Square

Syntagma Square for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Greece, which is located at the Parliament Building. Every hour, guards called Evzones perform the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Greece changing of the guard. The Evzones wear curious uniforms with pom-poms on the toes of their shoes and skirts with stockings. The uniforms differ in the summer from the winter garb, and on Sundays and special celebrations the uniform is the most formal. The 11 o'clock am Sunday changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Greece is a more ornate ceremony, where scores of people gather to watch.

The Battle of Syntagma Square, Athens

When I got back from Athens the first thing I did was take a shower to wash away the stench of tear gas, Maalox and fear that had hung around me since the morning. Although I have seen my fair share of violent clashes here in Greece, including the uprising in December 2008, nothing had prepared me for the sheer level of savagery shown by the Athens riot police. More than once I saw them act like wild animals, pouncing upon anyone foolish enough to stop to plead or remonstrate with them

Pushing back: 3 September Syntagma Square, 2011

The call back to Syntagma came after weeks of minimal activity & visibility since the 28 & 29 June, even though the direct democracy People's Council continued to meet every night. This video - with narration - witnesses the tension between the 'predominant' young and the riot police after a sudden escalation of the multi-generational gathering being pushed back from the Parliament building towards Syntagma Square - and the citizens 'pushing back' with their presence and later, conversation.

The Battle for Syntagma Square

When I got back from Athens the first thing I did was take a shower to wash away the stench of tear gas, Maalox and fear that had hung around me since the morning. Although I have seen my fair share of violent clashes here in Greece, including the uprising in December 2008, nothing had prepared me for the sheer level of savagery shown by the Athens riot police. More than once I saw them act like wild animals, pouncing upon anyone foolish enough to stop to plead or remonstrate with them Time and time again the police sent vollies of tear gas into packed crowds and it's only by a miracle that no one got crushed under foot as thousands of people ran panic striken from the gas and flash grenades. Nor did this stop throughout the day, from the moment the trouble started at 1pm till after midnight Syntagma Square smelt and sounded like a war zone with an almost continous series of loud explosions and renewed tear gas attacks on the Los Indignados encampment. Even as far away away as Monesteriki (a neighbourhood about 1km from parliament) rampaging motocycle officers created havoc as they attacked peaceful protesters in cafes and tavernas and gunned their bikes along narrow streets packed with tourists drinking coffee outside. At no point did the level of police response correspond with the threat they were facing, instead of calmly dealing with a small group of stone throwing trouble makers they launched an all out attack on five fronts against demonstrators which succeeded in ...

Which side are you on? Which side are you on? Which side are you on? My dady was a miner, And I'm a miner's son, And I'll stick with the union 'Til every battle's won. They say in Harlan County There are no neutrals there. You'll either be a union man Or a thug for JH Blair. Oh workers can you stand it? Oh tell me how you can? Will you be a lousy scab Or will you be a man? Don't scab for the bosses, Don't listen to their lies. Us poor folks haven't got a chance Unless we organize.

Starring Pigoulinos, representing the people of PIGS realdemocracygr.wordpress.com www.amesi-dimokratia.org There is a plan to strangle financially the nations so that the rich become richer and the poor poorer. A "select" few want to control entire states. To start with, the banks set in motion in each country the plan for the extreme accumulation of debt, assisted by corrupt governments. Then comes the IMF ... Those who collaborated with the profiteers; those who bailed-out the banks; those getting ready to sell out the national property to the vultures that created the crisis; those who governed but failed to claim reparations for the World War II damages from Germany continuing instead -because of bribery- to buy weaponry from the "ally"; all these who undermined the public interest should be accused of high treason. Instead unemployment increases dramatically, poverty goes rampant, businesses close down, the public sector shrinks, social welfare --education, healthcare, pensions -- are brought to nought, labour and social rights are cut down, justice disappears, equality is yet to be found, it is a struggle to maintain dignity with the cuts in wages and pensions, the country's resources and its property go to private hands, the nation's sovereignty is undermined, the very citizens themselves end up the property of those who rule the world. EVERYBODY KNEW WHAT WOULD FOLLOW. Because all those who governed ...
