According to Kenya Airports Authority, the houses sit in the corridor flight path, which poses a great risk to the safety of planes as well as the lives of the dwellers. Over 200 housing units within a 3KM radius from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport have been earmarked for demolition, an exercise carried out under tight security by both the regular and administration police officers. A modern commuter railway station being constructed at Syokimau in Embakasi is expected to be completed by the end of this year, as plans to turnaround Kenya's urban transport system begin taking shape. Already 60% of the project which will ease traffic flow on major highways has been completed and the government is now in the process of acquiring additional land to put up a car park for motorists who will leave their cars at the station and board a train to the city. At the hearings, Embakasi member of parliament Ferdinand Waititu claimed that a company linked to the prime minister and his brother, deputy finance minister Oburu Odinga, owned parcel of land in the disputed area and they had allegedly instigated the demolitions. It was a sigh of relief for home owners on controversial Syokimau land whose houses have not been demolished after a Nairobi Court temporarily halted any further demolitions. The Uungani Settlement Scheme successfully lodged a petition to stop all planned demolitions pending the hearing of the case on 30th of November. In an apparent reference to the vicious land ownership tussle in Syokimau, which led to demolitions of houses and which is subject to a probe by a joint committee of parliament, the President nonetheless promised that the Government would uphold respect for private property as long as it was legally acquired.
