Deadly double suicide blasts shock Syria

Around 40 people have reportedly been killed and more than 100 wounded in double suicide bombings in the Syrian capital. The regime is laying the blaming for the attack on Al Qaeda. It's the first incident of its kind in Damascus since the uprising began in March. This comes against the backdrop of the first batch of Arab League monitors arriving to implement a peace deal, endorsed by the body. Former Belgian MP Lode Vanoost thinks the West and its Arab allies are simply seeking an excuse for military intervention. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Syria Doomed? 'Invasion planned long ago'

Arab League observers are due to arrive in Syria on Thursday as part of a plan to halt violence. That is after one of the bloodiest weeks since the beginning of the unrest, with more than 200 people having been killed in the last few days. The US has renewed its call for President Assad to step down, warning of new international measures unless it withdraws security forces from the streets. Syria is already suffering under a set of sanctions. Sibel Edmonds, founder of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition, says sanctions will only provoke violence in Syria, causing deeper restlessness in the conflict-ridden country. The ongoing situation in Syria looks set to dominate those talks in Moscow. In the latest development, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Syria's third-largest city of Homs, demanding international protection. It happened after the Arab League's monitoring team visited the area. The observers mission is to assess the situation in the country, and ensure President Assad's compliance with a regional plan to end the bloodshed. 'Fog of pre-war over Syria'

The UN Security Council is pouring over the details of a new draft resolution on Syria, put forward by Russia. It condemns all sides in the ongoing conflict, calling for violence to stop - but there's no mention of sanctions. Moscow's been trying to mediate a peaceful solution for months, but there's been little let-up in the violence. Over two dozen state security officers were killed in recent clashes by defectors. The Free Syrian Army claims to have more than 25-thousand troops, fighting to bring down President Assad. Western states still don't acknowledge that anti-regime protesters are armed. Violence continues across Syria

Syrian forces have killed at least 30 people, including three children, after firing on anti-government demonstrations across the country during a planned national strike, activists have said. Two boys, ages 10 and 12, were hit by stray bullets near government checkpoints on Friday in Homs, Syria's third-largest city and a hotbed of opposition to the regime, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Another activist group, the Syrian Revolution General Commission, said three defected soldiers had also been killed there. Activists dubbed Friday the day of the "Dignity Strike" and had hoped to stage a mass display of civil disobedience. There were also reports of violence and arrests in Aleppo and Damascus, the capital. Rula Amin reports.

'Iran & Syria will never yield to painful sanctions'

The US Senate has unanimously approved sanctions on Iran's central bank, despite warnings the move could disrupt markets across the globe. The measure still needs the approval of the House of Representatives and President Barack Obama in order to come into effect. This follows hot on the heels of the EU, which extended its sanction, increasing pressure on the country it accuses of pursuing nuclear weapons. That's as the United States said it is committed to take steps to freeze Iranian Central Bank assets - delivering a hard blow to the country's economy. The announcement comes days after an attack on the British Embassy in Tehran, which prompted the UK to withdraw its diplomats and close Iran's mission in London. Syrians urge support for army defectors

Many Syrian dissidents are calling for more support for troops who have defected to protect anti-government protesters from the government's brutal crackdown. The Free Syrian Army is widely considered one of the main opposition armed wings that is fighting government troops blamed for killing thousands of people in the bid to crush the nine-month protest movement. However, the group's representatives have not been invited to the first meeting of the main political opposition - the Syrian National Council - being held in Tunisia. Syrian Split: Rebels want foreign boots on ground, observers out

Some groups in Syria's opposition say they want an Arab military intervention to, quote, 'protect civilians from government security forces'. Part of the opposition dismissed the deal as a stalling tactic. Syria has been increasingly isolated under sanctions from Arab states, the US and the EU over its crackdown on the anti-government protesters. Russia proposes UN resolution on Syria

Russia has proposed a draft resolution on the violence in Syria to the UN Security Council, strongly condemning violence by "all parties, including disproportionate use of force by Syrian authorities". Western members of the council who have been pressing for tough measures against President Bashar al-Assad's government welcomed the move, but said it did not go far enough because it stepped short of including an arms embargo or other sanctions. The draft called on all parties in Syria to "immediately stop any violence irrespective of where it comes from". Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from the United Nations in New York.

Shocking Video: Syrian opposition violence

Torture, booby-trapped cars, machine-guns shooting in the air -- RT has come into the possession of a video that deals with episodes of the day-to-day life of members of the Syrian opposition. It shows members of the opposition wielding various weaponry -- from sickles to pump-action shotguns -- and using it, as well as some results of their actions. Parts of it contain too much violence to be reproduced for an unprepared audience, the rest is available to demonstrate the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe Syria is dealing with. Meanwhile, Russia has declared its readiness to continue working on a new resolution on Syria and expects two delegations of the Syrian opposition to visit Moscow for negotiations in October. While a massive group of Western countries last week proposed two resolutions, both of which included sanctions against current President Bashar al-Assad's regime if violence against the opposition continues, Russia and China opposed any kind of sanctions. Russia has condemned the Western resolutions as being designed to force a regime change in Syria, which, according to numerous statements made by Russia's Foreign Ministry, will only encourage violence.
