When the earthquake/tsunami hit, he was living 15km west of the plant, operating his own business of solar power generation, surfing on his free time. After the explosion of Unit 1 reactor, he and his family evacuated to Kochi Prefecture, where they live now. Mr. Kimura has given talks at various anti-nuclear rallies around the country. The footage, provided by the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), shows staff walking around the No 1 reactor building in protective suits. The images were filmed on Friday, a day after workers entered the site for the first time since shortly after the earthquake and tsunami in March. TEPCO began installing air purifying equipment last Thursday, in a bid to reduce radiation levels and to improve working conditions. Belated release of radiation forecast data The Japanese government is about to begin releasing data projecting the spread of radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that it initially withheld for fear of causing panic. The data in question is in a computer system called SPEEDI that predicts the spread of radioactive substances based on actual radiation measurements at various locations and weather conditions. A joint task force of the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company says about 5000 undisclosed bits of data will be released from Tuesday. The battered operator of Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant said on Friday it will make provisional compensation payments that would cover 50000 households, totaling around $599 million. This is based on the first batch of provisional payments worth $12000 to be given to 50000 households within the 19 mile evacuation radius of the nuclear plant. Shimizu told reporters that he plans to finance these massive compensations by streamlining the company. Kei Sugaoka the GE/Tepco Whistleblower (Subtitles provided) On June, 2002 one man forced the shutdown of 17 reactors in Fukushima and Niigata in Japan. The reason was a reactor damage cover-up that was denounced by nuclear engineer Kei Sugaoka. Sugaoka a Japanese-American, back then a GE engineer who was in charge of the inspection and repairs of nuclear reactors became aware of several structural damages in a Fukushima reactor. However, he was told by TEPCO and GE to cover-up the damage and erase all the evidence about it. In response he submits a report of the irregularities to the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Japan which after further investigation unveil a total of 29 cover-up cases. This whistleblow scandal in the industry forces the temporary shutdown of 2 nuclear plants in Fukushima and Niigata and a complete restructuring in the nuclear industry in Japan. The utility company said on Thursday that most of the fuel rods are likely to have melted and fallen to the bottom of the reactor. Earlier in the day, it found that the coolant water in the reactor is at a level which would completely expose nuclear fuel rods if they were in their normal position. The company believes the melted fuel has cooled down, judging from the reactor's surface temperature. TEPCO retracts radioactivity test result www3.nhk.or.jp Tokyo Electric Power Company has retracted its announcement that 10 million times the normal density of radioactive materials had been detected in water at the Number 2 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. The utility says it will conduct another test of the leaked water at the reactor's turbine building. The company said on Sunday evening that the data for iodine-134 announced earlier in the day was actually for another substance that has a longer half-life.
