Sonny Tackett doing the Gary Stewart classic "Flat Natural Born Good Timin' Man".Many people said Sonny sounded a lot like Gary, but in an interview with Dr Don Bevins, Sonny said that they sounded nothing alike , but that he just had a knack for phrasing like Gary and other artists. However, they were great personal friends, and Sonny credits Gary with being a huge influence on his writing and singing, while Gary stated many times that Sonny was his favorite writer. This is from an old tape, and has a few glitches, but is well worth the listen, as its easy to see that Sonny thought highly of the song.Sonny does few cover songs, as he is a prolific writer himself, but among those few are songs by his mentors, Gary Stewart, Gregg Allman, and Van Morrison, whom Sonny considers the greatest songwriters in the world. Also, Sonny was just sitting in with some friends and this was never rehearsed and just off the cuff, but the band handles it with ease, and as you can see it was a crowd favorite. This is from 1991,and is as popular today as it was then.Sonny is recording a Gary Stewart Tribute cd soon for Moondancer Records, and this may be on it.Enjoy, and please feel free to comment, as Sonny loves to hear from his fans, and Garys also.Gary recorded 14 of Sonny's songs in his career, and the two of them wrote many more that have yet to be recorded, so many of these will be on the tribute cd.
