Facebook IPO: did underwriters selectively disclose poor earnings information?

SUBSCRIBE to Next Media Animation: www.youtube.com As Facebook officials were busy hyping the company's $16 billion IPO, the company quietly told its underwriters Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan to scale back 2Q earnings estimates. Of course, smaller investors and those buying shares in the open market never received this information. This selective disclosure provides investors close to the underwriters an advantage small investors don't enjoy. In the three days since Facebook went public, the shares have lost 18%.

Bobby Petrino fired as Arkansas Razorbacks football coach

nma.tv Arkansas has fired football coach Bobby Petrino for playing away from home. Petrino, who had revived Razorbacks football program over the past four years, was involved in a motorcycle accident with a female university employee with whom he was having an affair. Petrino wiped out on his Harley on April 1. The subsequent police report revealed that Petrino, who is 51, married and has four children, was riding with Jessica Dorrell, a former Arkansas volleyball player who is 21 and engaged. Petrino had told university officials and the media that he was driving alone and made vague reference to Dorrell as a "a lady" who helped flag down a passing motorist. In fact, Petrino had been in a long relationship with Dorrell, had once given her $20000 in cash, and had just hired her for a job. Dorrell was engaged to the athletic department's director of swimming and diving operations. Their wedding was less than two months away. Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long told reporters Petrino was fired for not being candid about his "personal and professional relationship." "Coach Petrino knowingly misled the athletics department and the university about the circumstances related to his accident," Long said during a press conference on Tuesday. Petrino boasted a 34-17 record in four seasons as the Razorbacks head coach. Last season the Razorbacks finished with a 11-2 record and ended the season with a Cotton Bowl victory and a top five ranking.

North Carolina gay marriage ban puts pressure on Obama

Meanwhile California is moving in the opposite direction, as a bill makes its way through the state legislature that would ban psychotherapy aimed at making gay people straight. Queen Elizabeth gets royal snub from Queen of Spain over Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a small rock with an area of just 6.8 square kilometres, or 2.6 square miles located on the southern tip of Spain. Although it is attached to Andalucia, Spain, Britain controls Gibraltar. The Brits captured Gibraltar during the 1704 War of the Spanish Succession, sparking a centuries-old beef between Spain and Britain. This tension is making headlines again when Queen Sofia retracted her decision to attend Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee lunch celebration set to take place today. Many think the move is due to the Gibraltar spat, but there may be other reasons, among them Queen Sofia's rocky relationship with King Juan Carlos. Their decision not to celebrate their Golden Anniversary is the latest indicator that the couple is estranged.

Norway's butter crisis threatens to ruin Christmas

www.nma.tv A low-carb diet craze swept Norway this year, driving up butter consumption by 30 percent in November. But now Christmas is here, and Norway has run out of butter. How will grandma bake her krumkake? Norway is one of the richest countries in the world and they are willing to pay for their butter fix. The price of butter spiked at 80 Euros a kilo on auction sites. A Russian butter smuggler was caught trying to bring in 90kg of contraband butter. While butter conglomerate TINE offered excuses, the truth is Norway's neighbor Denmark is a plentiful butter producer. If imported butter were not kept out of Norway by protectionist trade policies, Norwegians would not be faced with a butterless Christmas. A Danish morning show is donating 1000 packets of butter to Norwegians to help out in this time of crisis.

Epic meltdown leads to big changes for Red Sox

www.nma.tv The Boston Red Sox suffered for decades under the Curse of the Bambino. But with World Series wins in 2004 and 2007, it seemed the curse had been reversed. The Sox were doing well before blowing up in September. Some do not blame the Bambino, but a pitching staff that got lazy eating fried chicken and drinking beer during games. In the most epic implosion in history, the Red Sox went from leading the division to missing out on the playoffs. Manager Terry Francona and GM Theo Epstein are gone. Star hitter David Ortiz might be next. How would Big Papi look in pinstripes?

NBA lockout spoils start of 2011 season

www.nma.tv The collective bargaining agreement between NBA players and owners expired on July 1, initiating a lockout. Players currently receive 57% of basketball-related income. Owners are lobbying for a more even split. Owners claim most teams in the league are bleeding money, saying they lost a combined $300 million last year. Critics are skeptical of the grim picture owners paint. Teams are able to earn millions through local TV deals. The players aren't exactly hurting, either. They're fighting a hard salary cap that would limit their extravagant contracts. The first two weeks of the season have been cancelled, prompting some players to join foreign leagues. We in Taiwan say, "long live the lockout!"

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey and his celebrity death goal curse

nma.tv British tabloid The Sun has identified a strange series of coincidences linked to Premier League team Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey. When Ramsey scores a goal, someone famous dies. Ramsey has scored four goals in the last year. When he scored his first goal against Manchester United on May 1, the next day Osama Bin Laden was shot by US Navy SEALS. In October he scored against Spurs, just three days later Apple boss Steve Jobs passed away. When Ramsey netted against Marseilles, Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi was shot and killed the next day. Then on Saturday, just hours after Ramsey hit the back of the net against Sunderland, Whitney Houston was found dead in the hotel bathroom. Coincidence, or does Ramsey really possess the "kick of death?" Guess we'll just have to wait until the next time Ramsey registers with the scorers to find out.

NBA playoffs: Amare Stoudemire punch extinguishes New York Knicks' playoff hopes

SUBSCRIBE to Next Media Animation: www.youtube.com New York Knicks power forward Amare Stoudemire will miss at least two games after injuring his hand following the Knicks second heavy loss to Miami Heat in Game 2 of the NBA playoffs. Facebook: www.facebook.com Webpage: www.nma.tv Twitter @nmatv: twitter.com Tumblr: nmatv.tumblr.com Stoudemire had surgery to repair a lacerated left hand after he punched a fire extinguisher case near the locker room following the Knicks' 104, 94 loss to the Lebron James, Dwayne Wade inspired Heat. With the Knicks 2-0 down to a so far vastly superior Heat team the loss of Stoudemire, in addition to other missing stars such as Iman Schumpert and Jeremy Lin, looks to have ended the Knicks slim hopes of edging past Miami. Stoudemire has apologized to Knicks fans via Twitter, but fans might be thinking his loss is no big deal considering the team's 14-5 record without him in the team. Will Stoudemire's act of stupidity be the spur the lackluster Knicks need to rescue its season?

Santorum nearly squeezes out come-from-behind Iowa caucus victory

nma.tv Rick Santorum lost the Iowa caucuses to Mitt Romey by a mere eight votes, with Ron Paul finishing third. Romney beat Santorum, 30,0015 to 30007. Both Santorum and Romney received 25 percent of yesterday's vote, with Paul third at 21 percent. The Republican electorate is fractured between voters who support the relatively moderate Romney, who according to polls has the best chance of beating President Barack Obama, and voters looking for a more conservative candidate to support. Mitt Romney may have won the Iowa presidential caucuses, but Rick Santorum won the night. Romney has a huge campaign war chest and a big-spending PAC run by former aids, Restore Our Future, that dropped $4.1 million on the Iowa caucuses, compared to $600000 by PACs which supported Santorum. That Santorum, the conservative former Pennsylvania senator who written off until last week, nearly won the Iowa caucuses shows just how unenthusiastic Republican voters, especially evangelical Christians, are for the former Massachusetts governor. Ron Paul won the internet by getting endorsements from Chuck Norris and Drudge readers. So his third place finish must be disappointing. The Libertarian-leaning Paul possesses a fanatically loyal core of supporters but is not popular among moderates or politically conservative evangelicals. Santorum's sudden surge from behind was also a product of spectacular implosions by candidates Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Herman Cain, each of whom was for a period of ...

Kim Jong-il dead, North Korea's future uncertain

www.nma.tv North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is dead. State media reported the Dear Leader died on Saturday due to "great mental and physical strain" while on a "high-intensity field inspection." News of Kim Jong-il's death prompted a great outpouring of public grief, though North Koreans could hardly be expected to display any other kind of emotion in the tightly managed Stalinist state. Kim's son, the 20-something Kim Jong-un aka the Bright Leader, is the heir apparent. But the younger Kim is not secure in his power and the elder Kim's death could result in a dangerous power vacuum in what is arguably the world's most dangerous flashpoint and potentially embroil China and the US in a military confrontation in the Korean Peninsula.

John Travolta sued by male masseur for sexual harassment

SUBSCRIBE to Next Media Animation: www.youtube.com John Travolta is being sued for $2 million by a male masseur who claims the Hollywood star sexually assaulted him during a massage session at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Facebook: www.facebook.com Webpage: www.nma.tv Twitter @nmatv: twitter.com Tumblr: nmatv.tumblr.com The unidentified masseur, referred to as John Doe in court documents, alleges Travolta responded to an ad for his services and picked the masseur up in an SUV on Jan. 16. During the massage at a room in the Beverly Hills Hotel, Travolta stripped naked in front of the masseur, touched the masseur's genitals and attempted to initiate a "reverse massage." After the masseur repeatedly refused Travolta's advances, the suit alleges, Travolta offered the masseur a three-way with a female Hollywood star and told him he "got where he is now due to sexual favors he had performed when he was in his Welcome Back, Kotter days." Travolta's representatives say the accusations are false. They say their client was not even in California but on the East Coast when the alleged incident happened. "This lawsuit is complete fiction and fabrication," Travolta's representative said in a statement. "None of the events claimed in the suit ever occurred."
