Tannhauser Overture-Wagner/Leibowitz/Part-1 of 2

Rare. Rene Leibowitz conducts The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1962) ------------------------- Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire. Part 2 www.youtube.com

Tannhäuser (full title Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg / Tannhäuser and the Singers' Contest at Wartburg) is an opera in three acts, music and text by Richard Wagner, based on the two German legends of Tannhäuser and the song contest at Wartburg. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through most of Wagner's mature work.

Jorge Bolet plays Wagner-Liszt Tannhauser Overture, 1973 RCA studio recording - Part 1

An 'accidental' recording of Jorge Bolet playing the Wagner-Liszt Tannhauser Overture from a July 16, 1973 studio session in RCA Studio A, New York City. Bolet had finished a recording session but decided to run through this fiendishly difficult work (one which Liszt demands once played in two parts in concert, such are its technical demands). The engineers, operating two recording machines at the time, as was the practice, turned on one machine just in time to catch the opening but missed the first eight minutes on the other; however, using both tapes a complete performance was salvaged. Bolet would give this work a triumphant performance the following year at his breakthrough Carnegie Hall recital, which launched him to piano super-stardom at the age of 59. While that performance is breathtaking in its perfection, vindication for a pianist who had been overlooked for decades, this present interpretation is wrought from a more deeply emotional cloth: a performance that, to all intents and purposes, should have disappeared into thin air by a pianist who was aware of his abilities and who felt that he might never get the recognition he yearned for. This recording was issued for the first time in 2001 on RCA's "Bolet Rediscovered" CD, which also includes a series of unpublished Liszt recordings that Bolet made in 1972. This CD was conceived when a pianophile who had occupied more lowly positions at RCA was moved into a role of influence and called up his friend Gregor Benko ...

This is one of the greatest live opera recordings I've ever heard. The singers are perfection, dramatic and thrilling. The conducting is superb. You can hear Toscanini's influence on Leinsdorf. Tannhäuser Gate There comes a time for each of us to make one last desperate stab... at life To search for truth among the broken dreams but it's never found... or so it seems to me Can we break free? O body electric of thee I sing In my life I've done many things Out of anger and frustration Errors made in desperation My past follows me... but soon I'll be free Is it too late? To reach the Tannhäuser Gate? Is there still time? To cross the Siegfried Line? Is it too late? To reach the Tannhäuser Gate? Is there still time? To cross the Siegfried Line? O there's no point in living When life's too short to live And I'll be gone before you realize Just how much I really have to live O I've tried... Lord knows I've tried And I found... there was nothing to find Tell me is it too late? To reach the Tannhäuser Gate? Tell me is there still time? To cross the Siegfried Line? Tell me it's not too late... to reach the Tannhäuser Gate Tell me that there's still time... to cross the Siegfried Line Just one more time... When people build walls instead of bridges Their fortresses soon become their prisons Each day I hope and pray... all these memories will be washed away All this sadness, all this pain Lost in time like tears in rain... Like tears in rain... Tell me it's not too late... to reach the Tannhäuser Gate Tell me that there's still time... to cross the Siegfried Line Tell me that you'll wait... for me at Tannhäuser Gate Tell me that you'll be mine... at the Siegfried Line Tell ...
