In this episode of Cheap Family Travel (www.cheapfamilytraveltips.com), Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate headed to the wonderful Colorado ski resort town of Telluride, Colorado. We were looking for a fun and quiet place to go on our vacation and a Telluride vacation was just perfect! The town is full of shops, parks, and restaurants, and recreational opportunities, like mountain biking, hiking, river rafting, ice skating, and swimming, are all over the town. The highlight for us was the free Telluride gondola that goes up to the top of the Telluride Ski Resort for a great view of the town of Telluride, including the incredible Bridal Veil Falls and mountains that frame the valley. You can continue over the mountain to Mountain Village where more shops and restaurants await. We spent lots of time in Town Park, it has everything - baseball and soccer fields, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, a swimming pool and ice rink, even a campground. It is home to many of Tellurides outdoor festivals from music and film to yoga and mushrooms. We were there for the Nothing Festival, where movies cost nothing! Our whole family went to the movies for free! This is definitely our kind of place. The infamous Black Bear Pass is one of the most difficult mountain passes in Colorado. In July 2010 I did it on an ATV and filmed the entire trail. This video is an edited version of the 60-minutes I actually filmed. It begins at the summit of Black Bear Pass and ends at the Power Station and Bridal Veil Falls above Telluride, Colorado. If you want to watch the most difficult part of the trail, which begins at "The Steps," and shows all the tight switchbacks on the way down, skip to the 11-minute mark. The first part of the trail is a nice moderate trail and does not move into the difficult rating until "The Steps," which is a steep portion of the road covered in large slabs of rock with loose shale on top. Some of the steps are 12-to-18 inches in height. I first met Bob Weir at Charlie's Dalai Lama Party. I was screening some raw stock of The Festival Tapes in one of the cabins while recording various performances and events at the party. (see the Dalai Tapes) On one of my rounds through the cabin, I found Bob camped out in front of the video screen. "Did you record this?" he asked. "If we played Telluride, would you record us?" And so, the concert was scheduled. Uncle Bobo (Bill Graham) had some other ideas about the video. It was agreed that the audience was, in fact, the real show at a Dead Concert. Here the camera focus is on that experience, concluding with some extrordinary footage of the Band. As with all the postings here, the magic is in the details. In this mission, you need to land a Bombardier Learjet 45 full of celebrities at Telluride Regional Airport without slamming into the mountains surrounding it.
