
His Holiness the Dalai Lama remembers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in a speech at the CBS Arena, Christchurch, New Zealand on 8 June 2011. HH met friends and families of those who lost loved ones in February 2011 earthquake then was welcomed on stage by representatives of Ngai Tahu (the main South Island iwi) and Bishop Victoria of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch. As always, HH emphasised the importance of trust, peace, compassion, friendship and taking responsbility for our own behaviours and attitudes if we want to live happy lives and solve the problems in the world. While talking at length about sadness and tragedy, he was also pragmatic - things happen, it's a fact, don't worry worry worry. In particular, earthquakes, tsunamis etc happen all over the world every day. The world is not a safe place but we can't move to the moon or further into space, so we must plan for disasters, accept them and get on with living. He also said we can realise that the situation in Japan after its earthquake, and in Haiti, were far worse than in Christchurch so things are not so bad for us really. Suggestions were offered for the rebuilding of Christchurch including low-rise buildings, moving residential areas from badly damaged land, being positive, getting involved and being helpful - especially at community level, voting differently at the next elections if we are not happy what our elected politicians - locally and nationally - are doing(!), and getting started on the <b>...</b>
