The Electric Company opening theme Season One

The Electric Company is an educational American children's television series which was produced by the Children's Television Workshop (now Sesame Workshop) for PBS in the United States. PBS broadcast 780 episodes over the course of six seasons, from 1971 to 1977. After it ceased production that year, the program continued in reruns until 1985. CTW produced the show at Reeves Teletape Second Stage in Manhattan. The Electric Company employed sketch comedy and other devices to provide an entertaining program to help children of elementary-school age develop their reading skills. It was intended for children who had graduated from CTW's flagship program, Sesame Street. Appropriately enough, the humor was also that much more mature than what was seen there. The original cast included Morgan Freeman, Rita Moreno (it was Moreno who screamed "Hey, you guyyyyys!!" to open the show in seasons two, five, and six and first screamed the phrase in episode 19), Bill Cosby, Judy Graubart, Lee Chamberlin, and Skip Hinnant. Most of the cast had done stage, repertory, and improv work, with Cosby and Moreno already well-known from film and television. Ken Roberts, who was best known as a soap-opera announcer, was the narrator of some of the segments during the first season. Jim Boyd, who was strictly an off-camera voice actor and puppeteer in the first season, began appearing on-camera in season two, mostly in the role of J. Arthur Crank. Luis Avalos also joined the cast at that time. Bill ...

The Electric Company - Spider Man Theme Song: Gary William Friedman Dance Version

PLEASE JOIN US @FB TO GET TEC's BELOVED SPIDEY THEME SONG INTO THE UPCOMING 2012 MOVIE! www.facebook.com SPIDER MAN, WHERE ARE YOU COMING FROM? SPIDER MAN, NOBODY KNOWS WHO YOU ARE SPIDER MAN, YOU'VE GOT THAT SPIDEY TOUCH SPIDER MAN, YOU ARE A WEB-SLINGING STAR! Gary William Friedman wrote over 40 songs as the Music Director and Composer for CTW's Television show "The Electric Company". Hands down, his most popular song was the Spider Man theme. In addition to writing it, he was the vocalist on the recordings (under the pseudonym Will Power). The song was groovy and the skits were zany. Morgan Freeman and a host of others played foil to Danny Seagren's mute Spidey (or was it the other way around??) Our hope is that this great theme song - any version or cover of it, will make it into the upcoming Spider-Man movie. Millions grew up with it, and it deserves to be in the pantheon of tunes included in the Spider-Man movie series. Until now, fans have mostly heard the version used on the TV show. But this full-blown, wacky dance version was also produced and recorded in the 70's. You can also download it at iTunes: itunes.apple.com

From one of the early seasons, Morgan Freeman and Rita Moreno get their song on. A similar tune was used later as "One Word Comes After Another", with the same basic concept. I have to admit, this ultra hippie Easy reader was always my favorite..

The Electric Company- Letterman

Probably the best of the Letterman videos. "Dancing in the Dark." This an ancient file and the quality is poor. Sorry! As pointed out in the comments, Joan Rivers was the narrator, and Gene Wilder voiced The Letterman. Classic!

The Electric Company - Spidey Meets the Yeti

Narrated by Todd Graff, with Danny Seagren as Spidey, Jim Boyd as the Yeti, and Morgan Freeman as the policeman who wants to end the Yeti's squashing spree. The groovy Spider Man theme song was composed by Gary William Friedman, and the vocals on this version were performed by the fourth lineup of the Short Circus.

Mel Mounds (Morgan Freeman) introduces another song from the second lineup of the Short Circus: Allison (Denise Nickerson, who played gum chewing Violet in Willy Wonka), Julie (June Angela), Zachary (Douglas Grant), Buddy (Stephen Gustafson), and Kathy (Melanie Henderson). This song, written by Joe Raposo, has to be near the top of my list of all time favorite songs from the Electric Company. If they had released it as a 45rpm single, who knows how many copies it might have sold.

Opening titles from the 1976-77 season. These were very similar to the season 5 titles, but with a couple of sloppy edits fixed. For this final season, the funky drum break from the "Today on The Electric Company..." teaser was replaced by a new piece of electronic music.

The Electric Company - Shoo Shoo Sunshine

From 1971, Morgan Freeman sings a melancholy song by Joe Raposo & Elaine Laron. It's really impressive how a song teaching the "sh" sound from a children's show can be so moving and full of emotion. I doubt if there will ever be another educational program with such a unique mix of talent, both behind and in front of the camera.

Milton Friedman on Self-Interest and the Profit Motive 1of2

This clip is from the 15-part lecture series, "Milton Friedman Speaks" www.ideachannel.com Transcript available via FreedomChannel: freedomchannel.blogspot.com Summary: A student poses a series of question on based on Friedman's notion that people should pursue their own self-interest. The student points out that he'd read that Friedman had previously come out against disaster aid for victims of a flood in Pennsylvania. Friedman corrected the questioner and noted that he did not come out against private aid for flood victims but instead was against the Federal Government providing discounted flood insurance in advance to home purchasers which motivated people to build houses in areas where they otherwise would not have been able to obtain insurance privately. If not for the discounted insurance, it's likely many of the flooded houses would never have been built in the first place as it wouldn't have been in peoples self-interest. The student went on to note that it was recently reported that an old man in Ohio died when the electric company turned off his power when he'd failed to pay his electric bill. Was it moral for the company to act in it's own self-interest to do so? Friedman responded by asking what if the electric company never turned off the power for anyone? Who would pay the cost--the people who own or work at the electric company? It would be unjust to impose that responsibility on individuals who are running an honest business of providing electricity ...
