Fire and Rain, James Taylor -- cover by ThinkingDog

I've been playing a lot of James Taylor tunes lately and thought I'd lay down a cover of "Fire and Rain." For those trying to learn this great acoustic guitar song, I've included a few close-up shots of the fret board to catch some of the chord fingerings I'm using -- hope this helps. I'm playing my trusty Taylor 810, strung with John Pearse 80/20 lights. Most of the guitar's recorded sound is captured via a direct line from the instrument (Fishman pick-up system) mixed with what's bleeding in from the AT 4050 mic I'm using for the vocal. I also laid down a track of percussion using a cajon -- for some reason I felt like playing this song at a slow pace, and thought the percussion would help the groove. Thanks as always for tuning in and listening.

Angelina, Tommy Emmanuel -- cover by ThinkingDog

Cover of Tommy Emmanuel's "Angelina," played on my old reliable Taylor 810. I know there are a lot of video covers of Angelina, but hopefully this one adds something helpful for those trying to learn this beautiful song (... the videos certainly helped me). Like several of TE's compositions, Angelina uses drop-D tuning (drop the low E string down to D) with a capo on the second fret. I've altered some of the chord fingerings to compensate for my inability to convince my left thumb to cover bass notes, but I'd encourage anyone who's learning this song to try mastering Tommy's thumb technique as it will provide you with more flexibility to articulate the melody notes. The harmonics at the end seem like a real bear at first, but anything is possible with a little practice -- as with all of Tommy's songs, the reward is worth the effort. This is one of the most satisfying songs to play on the acoustic guitar that I've ever encountered (and I've still got more work to do before I'm able to play it as smoothly as I'd like). Thanks for listening!

Great song by the incredible Tommy Emmanuel -- I'm fingerpicking it classical style, not quite able to play hybrid-style like Tommy (without sounding sloppy). This is a Taylor 810 guitar, which I bought about 15 years ago.

Tutorial on James Taylor's classic, "(You Can) Close Your Eyes." I hope this helps anyone trying to learn this great song, and JT's unique style of fingerpicking and embellishing chords. My suggestion is to get the chords and timing/groove down first, then work on the embellishments. Thanks for listening, and keep playing!

James Taylor guitar lesson #2 (Like Everyone She Knows) -- by ThinkingDog

I received several requests to post a cover / lesson for the instrumental opening to James Taylor's "Like Everyone She Knows." The song is from his 1991 CD, "New Moon Shine." It's a fun solo guitar piece, and a great example of JT's inventive and distinctive acoustic guitar style. I didn't have a lot of time to lay this down, so the lesson notes are a little rushed... hopefully this provides some degree of help to those interested in learning this tune. I've never written tabs, so this is about as much help as I can offer. [added note: 1/26/10] Here's a good tab recommended by several people, courtesy of Jon at GraceMusik: gracemusik.webs.com In this video I'm playing a Taylor 810 with Elixir light gauge strings. Fantasia (SL Weiss) -- classical guitar, performed by ThinkingDog

Fantasia (or Fantasie) in Dm, a great classical guitar piece by the 18th century composer Sylvius Leopold Weiss, who was a contemporary of JS Bach and considered one of the greatest lute players in history -- although I read somewhere his thumb was nearly bit off by another musician late in his life, which I'm sure would compromise anyone's technical abilities (!). In this video I'm playing a Takamine TC132SC nylon string guitar. I was hesitant to post this because I'm not a classical guitarist, but this is a beautiful piece of music for all acoustic guitar players, whether you're into classical or not. I learned this years ago, forgot it, then recently re-learned it -- it's a lot of fun to play. If you're interested, sheet music and tabs exist for this song plus there are a dozen or so YouTube videos of serious classical players covering the tune (... the right way).

I haven't posted a JT song in a while -- so I've attempted to cover a song I've been playing for a long time, one of his best, IMO. Moon River, melodic fingerstyle acoustic guitar -- cover by ThinkingDog

This melodic classic was written by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, with a beautiful arrangement for solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar by Ed Gerhard. The song first appeared in the 1961 film Breakfast At Tiffany's and won an Oscar for Best Original Song. I'm playing a Martin 000CXE Black, capo on the 4th fret, low E tuned down to C. Hope you enjoy it ...

Mombasa, Tommy Emmanuel -- cover by ThinkingDog

Cover of Tommy Emmanuel's "Mombasa," played on a Taylor 810. My playing on this video is a little sloppy and uneven, but I hope this helps anyone out there who's trying to learn the song. As usual when I'm trying to play TE's songs, I'm not good at using my left thumb to cover bass notes (as Tommy often does) so I've developed alternate chord fingerings in certain spots, such as the last chord in the chorus. Tempo for "Mombasa" varies between his studio version (on his 2002 CD "Only") and his live performances (on stage he plays it faster than my tempo here), but it's a great tune at any speed and a fun, spirited song to play.

"January" (original), solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar -- ThinkingDog

This song came from a short fingerpicking phrase I've been playing around with for over ten years -- just a simple rhythm/melody thing that grew out of a basic G chord, standard tuning. It stuck with me because I like the movement of the fingerpicking cycle, reminds me of the rhythm of a train or galloping horse. I finally put the full song together earlier this year as a solo acoustic guitar piece, in January -- a month that signals new beginnings, also the month my son was born. I hope you like the tune. I'm playing a Goodall MCJC, standard tuning.

James Taylor guitar lesson (Never Die Young) -- by ThinkingDog

Lesson notes on James Taylor's unique guitar style, including examples of some of his most commonly used chords and embellishments plus detailed notes on "Never Die Young" -- one of JT's best songs (IMO) and a great example of his melodic fingerpicking technique. When I was first getting into the acoustic guitar, JT inspired me to look beyond just strumming chords. He approaches the guitar like a piano player -- incorporating bass lines, melodies and harmonies simultaneously while making it all sound deceptively simple. I think he's generally under-appreciated as a guitar player -- in my view, he's one of the best acoustic players out there. I feel the need to add a disclaimer here: Ive learned a number of JT songs over the years, but I dont always capture every note accurately and Ill never get the exact technique or feel that he brings to the guitar because Im not that good, and theres only one James Taylor. Obviously the best way to really learn JT's distinctive style of guitar playing is to spend as much time as possible listening and studying his recordings. I'm playing a Taylor 810 with Elixir polyweb strings, light gauge (.012 - .053). I hope this video helps; remember not to get too hung up on nailing every note, instead concentrate on getting the feel and groove first -- that's what matters most to the player and listener. Enjoy, and keep playing!

Little Fingers (Adam Rafferty), solo fingerstyle blues guitar -- cover by ThinkingDog

My cover of "Little Fingers," a funky 32-bar blues written by Adam Rafferty. When I heard this tune and saw Adam's video, I knew I had to learn it -- I'm a big fan of jazz-influenced blues. But ... it's a challenging song; I still don't have all the exact notes (in the middle), articulation and dynamics right yet. Hopefully I'll make progress as I continue working on it. Adam plays it so smoothly, with such conviction and joy, I was hesitant to post a video since any comparison would be like a butcher (me) to a surgeon (Adam). Hopefully Adam, and his fans, will forgive me; I enjoy the song a lot, it's really a great tune to play! -- maybe in a small way I can help spread the word about what a wonderful composition this is, and help others interested in learning it. I'm playing a Maton 808 Artist, John Pearse light strings, direct line in to my Mac running Logic. "Little Fingers" appears on Adam Rafferty's CD, "Chameleon" and is available on iTunes. Somewhere (There's A Place For Us), fingerstyle guitar -- cover by ThinkingDog

My cover of Adam Rafferty's arrangement of "Somewhere," the tragic love song from West Side Story, by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim -- one of the most beautiful melodies ever written (IMHO). The song has a special meaning in my life because my father worked on the film (1960 - '61). For years I've wanted to try an arrangement of this song for acoustic guitar, and then I saw/heard Adam Rafferty's arrangement a fews weeks ago which blew me away (Adam's YT channel: www.youtube.com ). Adam manages to infuse the dark, ominous undertones of the song's story into his arrangement without taking any shine of the melody, which is hauntingly bright and optimistic. For my cover, I altered a few elements of Adam's arrangement -- to be clear, nobody can play this arrangement like Adam -- so if you're interested in learning this piece, please look at Adam's video (if you haven't already). For example, Adam plays the critical third note of the melody (starting the second time around) as an altered chord (raised 5th, I think) -- I play it as a straight major chord, in part because when I play the altered chord it just sounds wrong; it's a testament to Adam's musicianship that when he plays it, it sounds "right" ( ... great musicians have such conviction in their playing, there are no "wrong" notes). The changes I incorporated are relatively minor -- mostly it's just a matter of personal taste, what your ear is telling you, and what you're comfortable playing. Thanks to Adam for <b>...</b>

Simplicity (Adam Rafferty), solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar -- cover by ThinkingDog

My cover of Adam Rafferty's "Simplicity," a beautifully melodic composition for solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar. It's a great example of Adam's ability to bring out both the delicate and dramatic capabilities of the acoustic guitar in a single song. "Simplicity" appears on Adam's CD, "Gratitude." Adam's website: www.adamrafferty.com This song uses alternate tuning, sometimes called G6 or Drop DG tuning: (low to high) DGDGBE. I'm trying out a new Cole Clark limited edition Triumph FLAC2. This guitar has a brilliant 3-part pickup system, best I've ever heard. The Triumph is a beast, tight as a drum, a little tougher to play than I'm used to -- but it has a great balance with lots of raw wood in the tone. Thanks as always for listening!

I recently worked out an arrangement of this melodic song, written by Dave Grusin and made famous by Stephen Bishop's version in the movie "Tootsie" -- dedicated to my wonderful wife.
