Tiziano Vecelli (better known as Titian) was born near Venice sometime around 1488, just a couple of years before Columbus talked the Spanish into bankrolling his three boats for a cool ride toward China. Experts put his birthday anywhere from 1473 to as late as 1490, but he lived a very long time and we'll probably never know for sure. He was sent to Venice at an early age to study painting under Gentile Bellini, then became the assistant to Giorgio da Castelfranco (known as Giorgione). Giorgione died in 1510 and Bellini died in 1516, leaving Titian as the most talented artist in Venice. He stayed at the top for 60 years, creating the master works in this video. He painted everything equally well -- portraits, landscapes, mythology, religion. He died when the plague took him in 1576, probably in his late 80s. How good was he? One of his paintings, "Diana and Actaeon" (the first painting shown in this video after the opening title), recently sold at auction (2009) for $71 million. For music, we have "La Cenerentola Overture," by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini.

TOWARDS THE END OF HIS LIFE TITIAN DIDN'T FINISH HIS PAINTINGS. The elderly artist kept them in his studio, never quite completing them, as though wanting to endlessly postpone the moment of closure. Produced with the fingers as much as the brush, Titians last paintings are imbued with a sense of final, desperate effort a rawness and immediacy that werent to be seen again in art for centuries. But what did Titian, who experienced as much in the way of material success as any artist before or since, mean by these works? Are they a harrowing, final testament or simply a collection of unfinished paintings? In the outbreak of plague that finally killed him, Titians studio was looted, and many paintings taken. What happened to them is not known.
