【English Sub】Japan 2011 Birdman Rally, Tohoku University Flight 【鳥人間コンテスト】

Commissioned by an acquaintance of mine, this is the very recent, heartening story of a student representing the unshakable spirit of earthquake and tsunami-stricken northeast Japan as he flies a pedal-powered airplane over Lake Biwa. I expect many people have uploaded the pilot's famous collection of utterances, but for the people who didn't see the program (ie people outside of Japan), merely seeing the cramped cockpit and his increasingly desperate shouts may be disturbing, confusing at best. Thus I argued that the only way to understand just how amazing this strong-willed pilot is, one must see the original footage.

Active Scope Camera by Tohoku University : DigInfo [HD] [CC]

DigInfo - www.diginfo.tv The active scope camera is a rescue robot that is designed for the purpose of searching for victims left behind in collapsed buildings. The scope camera can actively penetrate narrow paths as small as 3cm wide using a unique thrust mechanism and can take pictures using the camera mounted to the front of the scope. Because the entire cable is covered in cilia, thrust force can be generated along the entire cable, and even when traversing through unevenly shaped rubble, the scope camera can propel itself forward if part of the cable is in contact with the surface. The length of the cable that can be inserted is 5m or 8m and the front end is equipped with an oscillating mechanism. The direction that the scope camera is traveling can be dramatically changed by twisting the part of the cable that is near the operator.

The Laboratory for Nanoelectronics and Spintronics at Tohoku University

[Keio Spintronics Network - Ohno Laboratory, Tohoku University] In the Laboratory for Nanoelectronics and Spintronics at Tohoku University's Research Institute of Electrical Communication, a group led by Professor Hideo Ohno is doing fundamental research on ferromagnetic semiconductors, which have the both properties of semiconductors and magnetic materials. Prp.Hideo Ohno Q"Semiconductors and magnetic materials, which are used to make integrated circuits and hard disks, are two separate things. But if you think about it, they use different aspects of the same thing - electrons. These materials utilize electricity, and small magnets, for separate purposes. So we thought that, if we looked at them together, we might find new capabilities or new phenomena. " If progress is made in research on ferromagnetic semiconductors, which combine properties from two formerly separate fields of research, it's expected that this will lead to applications, such as high-performance nonvolatile memory that doesn't use electric charge, and reconfigurable logic circuits. Associate Professor Matsukura, member of Ohno's research group, is studying III-V(three-five) compound semiconductors, such as gallium arsenide and indium arsenide. By doping these compounds with the magnetic element manganese, ferromagnetic materials can be produced. Prp.Matsukura Q"Ferromagnetic semiconductors were originally developed by our group, and we studied them without knowing whether they could actually be used ...

Pagoda Restaurant and aio are collaborating with local businesses and community groups to raise money for the "Tohoku University Hospital -Japan Relief Fund." Sendai is in the Miyagi Prefecture of Japan, and is the largest city in the Tohoku Region. The coastal city has suffered catastrophic damage from the earthquake (9.0 magnitude) and resulting tsunami waves (up to 77 feet) on March 11. The epicenter of the quake was 45 miles east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tohoku. Since the disaster hit, Tohoku University Hospital has been providing food, medicine and comfort items to people in need from the surrounding areas. "With Aloha" tickets are $50 ($60 at the door). They can be purchased online at: www.withaloha.org. Twenty-four (24) restaurants are participating, including Le Bistro, Pagoda, Hukilau Honolulu, Honolulu Burger Co., Ryan's Grill, Kincaid's, Hy's Steakhouse, Nalo Farms and Murphy's Bar and Grill. Anheuser-Busch, Hawaii Nui, Better Brands, Southern Wines, Paradise Beverages and Johnson Brothers are also participating. Brother Noland, Juke Joint 5PM, Ka'ala boys, Natural Vibes and others will be performing at the benefit. A crane-making booth, and silent auction are also planned.
